In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how eating soup with each meal can help you lose weight. Every meal except breakfast unless you know of a good breakfast soup. Eating warm soup before a meal has been shown to control your appetite. It may be the warmth of the broth or the fiber from the vegetables but either way eating more soup will help you feel full and help you eat less. Use tomato, vegetable or chicken broth soups instead of cream based soups. Add lots of different veggies to make the soup hearty and healthy.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Voyles, Rick compressedDr. Rick Voyles loves a good fight!  Or, rather, he likes to mediate a good fight!  Dr. Voyles became interested in conflict management when he was writing his doctoral thesis in religion a number of years ago.  His area of interest at the time was Christian/Jewish/Muslim relations (an obviously fertile ground for the practice of conflict management).  He tells us that he is absolutely thrilled to be able to intervene in tense and challenging situations and help bring clarity of purpose and a set of viable alternatives for families to consider as they work through their issues.  Dr. Voyles is the President of Conflict Resolution Academy, located in Smyrna, Georgia.  His goal is to create a “universal language” for guidance in the resolution of disputes as soon as they happen.  Listen as he talks about his work educating social workers, facility directors, care providers and family caregivers, among others, on how to resolve elder conflict issues.  Dr. Voyles can be reached at drrickv@aol.com, or at the academy at (770) 435-5009.  For more information, check out their website at www.conflictresolutionacademy.com.

Perloe, Mary compressedFollowing from last week’s conversation with Jo Vonn Givens, this week we were privileged to hear from another member of the Georgia Medical Care Foundation (GMCF) team.  Originally from Altoona, Pennsylvania, Mary Perloe received a degree from University of Wisconsin in Madison.  Twenty years ago, she relocated to Atlanta with her husband.   Today, Mary is the Manager of the Care Transitions Initiative for GMCF.  As noted last week, GMCF is the Medicare Quality Improvement organization for the state of Georgia.  The Care Transitions Initiative is intended to improve post acute care and referrals.  Specifically, Mary is working hard to reduce 30 day readmissions for Medicare and Medicaid patients.  Astonishingly, one in five patients today are readmitted to an acute care facility within 30 days of discharge, and a large percentage of those within the first week.  A study in 2005 pegged the national annual cost of this at 17 billion dollars!  Mary tells us that one of her case study facilities has decreased readmission of congestive heart failure patients by 10% in the last year.  The secret?  Education of patient and family, transfer of information at transitions and well planned and executed processes guiding these transitions.  Contact Mary at (678) 527-3425, email her at mperloe@gmcf.org, or visit the GMCF website at www.gmcf.org.

Risk Management and Real Estate Strategies to Help Preserve Your Family-Business

March 31, 2010 by angishields

When you own a family-business, virtually every financial decision that you make can have a long-term impact on both your business and your family.   On Thursday, April 1st, our guests, Dan Merkel, Founder, Southern State Insurance, Inc. and Josh Hirsh, Managing Director, Studley will share their insights on two key areas that are sometimes over looked—risk management and property leasing.

Without proper risk management—your entire business and all of the wealth that your family has built can disappear with one uninsured loss.  Dan Merkel will help you understand how to develop a comprehensive risk-management strategy that must be part of your overall business and succession planning.

Managing your real estate holdings and negotiating lease terms can be complex.  As a family-business owner you must also consider the impact a long-term commercial lease can have on your successors.  Josh Hirsh will help us navigate the commercial real-estate waters from a family-business perspective and will help us understand the opportunties available during these volatile times.

Our Guests:

Josh Hirsh, Managing Director, Studley

Josh joined Studley in June of 2000. He began his career in commercial real estate as a financial analyst focusing on acquisition and disposition strategies. His expertise includes evaluating the cash, GAAP, and book impact of a variety of real estate lease structures. As a broker, Josh works with both corporate clients and law firms on ensuring that his clients achieve both optimal financial results as well as flexibility to help manage a variety of human resource issues.

Josh is an active member of the American Israel Chamber of Commerce where he advises early-stage Israeli technology companies on various strategies for entering the market. He is an active member of the Northside Youth Organization where he has both coached baseball for the past several years and contributes as an active member on the park’s long-term planning committee. He is also working with Kate’s Club, a local non-profit, on a variety of fundraising and public awareness initiatives.

In 2009, Josh was recognized by the Atlanta Business Chronicle in its annual “40 under 40” list for his contributions and leadership in his company and community.  Josh graduated from Indiana University with a degree in real estate finance and Japanese.       Josh Hirsch, Studley – Telephone – 404-5043-0015

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Dr Michele Olson a strength and conditioning guru who runs her own Human Performance Lab at Auburn University. She has a bit of a controversial take on exercise  – having debunked the pilates for abs myth. You should hear what she thinks about Sports Specific Training – not a fan. She thinks the Wii Fit is great for sedentary people who are moving from no exercise to something – but for the current active person she says doing an activity in reality will expend more energy and work you out harder than a video game will. But the bottom line for Dr Abs is that some activity is better than nothing so go ahead and use the Wii Fit. In her work she tests the claims of exercise products and publishes them in peer reviewed journals. Sometimes this takes 2 years to do and in that time these faulty devices could have sold millions – so it is frustrating work. She says the ACSM has a quick peer review that can be done in months that trues to address this time issue. She has a new exercise dvd out called Fitness Prescription: Perfect Legs, Glutes & Abs” This dvd illustrates why she is called Dr Abs. To learn more about what she is up to and order the dvd go to her website www.micheleolsonphd.com

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share their favorite falafel and avocado spread recipe. Dr Fitness loves him some falafel and in his recipe he uses pinto beans  instead of chick peas and sometimes he’ll even use garbanzo beans. Throw in some cumen, cheese, crushed tortilla chips, egg white and some canola oil to make about 4 patties. For the spread use tomato, 1/2 an avocado and some lime juice. Put all that in a pita with some veggies like sprouts and carrots and you’ve got a healthy meal. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Meredith Moore and Pat Romboletti, co- hosts of Family Business Radio, spent an insightful and informative hour on Thursday, March 25th with guests Dean Harbry, with  Internal Innovations and a Professional Certified Coach credentialed through the International Coach Federation with, and Fritz Schlabach, CPA and (non-family) CFO of a family-owned business.

Fritz has been a non-family key executive for more than 20 years in family-owned businesses.  He explained that he grew up Amish and essentially was raised in a close knit family-environment on the family farm.  Listen to the Podcast for more details about his journey from his Amish family to the Marines, a Big 4 accounting firm and then his long career inside family owned-businesses.

Dean kicked off the conversation by explaining that an executive coach serves a specific function very different from a consultant. A coach partners with his client through a process of focusing on what’s inside that person—rather than coming in and telling the client what is wrong and how to fix it.  Similar to the way a professional athlete benefits from a coach, an executive coach “gets you farther faster,” he said.

One way he develops “executive presence” is by cultivating professional management skills. Using the illustration of what an executive does when something goes wrong, he pointed out that a professional manager, as opposed to the amateur manager, will forego finding a culprit in favor of finding solutions to the problem. This shift in attitude creates a safe environment in which employees feel like they can take risks and, just as important, will declare faster that a particular strategy isn’t working.

This point led to Fritz talking about his 20—year career preference for the family-owned business structure, which is an environment that requires him to have a wide bandwidth. He prefers the lack of bureaucracy where decisions can be made and unmade quickly. Additionally, he likes to wear many hats—“no two days are alike.” However, he also acknowledged that in a small company, you may do the mundane.  Light bulbs need to be changed. Toilets need to be cleaned. You have to humble yourself, set aside your issues and feel responsible, he urged.

Both guests gave compelling reasons for an executive to hire an executive coach. From Dean’s viewpoint, he sees that all human organizations—really, anywhere there are two or more people together—are relationship-driven. The resulting dynamics, whether in a family, a family-owned business or the largest corporation, creates tension. A coach will help an executive through that minefield. As for Fritz, he was clear that an executive coach doesn’t come with a magic wand. However, just as he, as an outsider, can provide clarity to the owner-family, a coach can supply him with much needed third-party objectivity.

One case in point: the situation within a family-owned business when the founder is considering bringing in a top-level, non-family executive. Fritz encouraged the founder/owner to get expert advice that will help them see what they are missing, something that requires them to accept that they may not have all the answers. Dean agreed by highlighting that, before taking such a step, the owner needs to do an in-depth evaluation of where the company stands. An honest and forward-thinking evaluation often arrives at the conclusion that they need to bring in someone with a different skill set and personality from the owner.

Please listen to (and download) the full discussion on our Podcast.  It is delightful mix of hard-earned wisdom and fresh perspective, guaranteed to be time well spent.

CIMG3058_3

Today on The Chic Perspectives Show I had on some fabulous women from Atlanta’s Women in Technology.  Heather Rocker, Executive Director of Women in Technology & the WIT Foundation joined me in the studio to talk about WIT and her path to becoming a leader.

Heather Rocker joined WIT in March 2007 as the organization’s first-ever executive director. She was named to the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s “Top 40 Under 40”, awarded “Outstanding Young Alumna” by Georgia Tech and most recently won the Turknett Leadership Character Award in the “Inspiritor” category.

Heather currently authors a blog about strategic volunteering and speaks to nonprofit and corporate groups about incorporating this concept into their leadership development plans.

Heather talked about Strategic Volunteering  – it’s about making the most of your limited time while making an impact in your community

In order to create the best volunteer role for yourself: you have to know what to look for, where to go, and how to get into the right placement

She suggested women consider expanding their network by volunteering.  Here are some questions to ask yourself if volunteering would be a good move for you: Outside of work, where am I involved?  What is the list of people that I could call today for a favor or introduction?  Could the leaders of organizations for which I volunteer serve as a reference for me?

Heather also suggested  you create a strategic volunteering action plan: use your performance reviews/goals to align your professional goals with your volunteer goals

Fela earned her Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in Math and Computer Science from Virginia Union University. Originally from the Northeast, Fela resides in Atlanta with her husband and two children.

Fela shared that  research is the secret weapon for an effective web site because it tells you the most important fact you need: how your customers use your product or service

When it comes to web sites, everyone wants to know the secret to customer loyalty. The key is RESEARCH FIRST, build and design LATER. Given a choice, the customer will buy based on their needs – not on design

The number one question they get asked at Satori Consulting: “why aren’t our customers buying from our web site?”  The answer: they’ve invested heavily in the technology and design of the site without understanding how their target audience will use the site

Fela recommended practicing the “Three E’s” – Examine your business goals, Enlighten yourself with research, Evolve your web site to meet your customers needs

She reminded us that it is important to also ask yourself: who is your web site’s intended user, and what are your business goals? Then find a way to marry the two.

Satori Consulting builds relationships with their clients while providing world-class consulting services. The result: clients know Satori Consulting will provide results-oriented solutions based on first-hand experience.

Web application development with a customer focus and product development with an emphasis on new product idea generation is a necessity for businesses building an effective web presence. My next guest was Jamie Greene, who is a Partner at Kilpatrick Stockton.

Jamie is a patent attorney with Kilpatrick Stockton where she has been obtaining and providing legal advice relating to biotechnology and pharmaceutical patents for over 25 years. As a co-leader of the Kilpatrick Stockton Health and Life Sciences Team, Jamie advises individuals, universities, and small start-up companies to large international companies on intellectual property issues.

She received a degree from Wellesley College in Molecular Biology, a law degree from Emory University and a Masters in Immunology from Emory and has been an adjunct professor of Intellectual Property at Emory Law School. In addition to being the immediate past-president of Women in Technology, Jamie is on the board of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America and Childspring International, and is a member of the Emory University Conflict of Interest Committee, the Georgia BIO Education and Workforce Development Committee and the CDC Foundation National Advisory Council.

Jamie shared her story and told us that it wasn’t easy being the first female patent attorney in Atlanta, but she has a determination to succeed.

As the graduate of an all-women’s college, Jamie is not easily intimidated. She is driven and passionate about the improvement of health and prevention of disease

She had a dream to contribute to something that had a huge impact on the health of humans and animals and started as a scientist in cancer research, but the results didn’t come fast enough.

Most people don’t realize that improvements in healthcare are directly related to patents

Discoveries must be patentable to provide business with the incentive to develop technology that will improve health.

By helping scientists obtain patents, Jamie achieves her original goal and has actually contributed to the eradication of illness and disease.

She has worked on obtaining patents involving human papillomavirus, the infection that can cause cervical cancer and death if not diagnosed and treated

The patents enabled a company to obtain the funds to develop a test that is now used to diagnose HPV infection at an early stage, resulting in the prevention of many deaths

Currently, she is helping  a scientist obtain patents on a diagnostic method for the early detection of breast cancer. He had to start his own company in order to develop and produce diagnostic tests based on his discovery. Patents were essential to funding and funding was necessary for successful research and development.

So was all the hard work worth it?   Organic Chemistry class, demeaning law professors, the Patent Bar exam and all those late nights studying and writing patent applications, when asked if she would do it all over again, Jamie Green answers an unequivocal -Yes, in a heartbeat.

To contact Jamie go to www.kilpatrickstockton.com

Next up was Tricia Dempsey, the founder and CEO of Agile, the IT staffing and consulting firm that works with technology leaders to speed their time to talent.  Tricia also serves as a board director for both Women in Technology and Komen for the Cure – Greater Atlanta.

Tricia talked about research that shows top talent is 250% more productive than average employees and what her firm does to help companies find the right people fast.

To hire someone with top talent, you must understand your need (beyond your job description) by creating a performance profile.

Tricia says the performance profile should “start with the end in mind” – you should consider what you will be reviewing  the winning candidate on one year from the date of hire.

Additionally, performance profiles consider hard skills, but also soft skills, values/motivators and behavioral style.

The bottom line – Hire slow…fire fast

Find out more about Agile the IT staffing company @ www.gotoagile.com

Next in the group was Mary Lou Heastings, President of Executive Alliance

As president of Executive Alliance, Mary Lou Heastings has responsibility for guiding the expansion of the company’s portfolio of technology related leadership award recognition programs, executive summits, roundtables, and custom programs across the U.S. Her leadership has resulted in the establishment of a national network for senior level executives in Fortune 1000 organizations. An avid boater, she also received her Captain’s license in 2004.

Mary Lou told us that it’s not enough to be good at what you do, people need to know how good you are

She recommends you stake out a corner – the key to building great recognition is “know me for this”  You want to showcase not what is most different, but most compelling.

Promote your vision; lead strategically, emphasize the journey, and focus on the vision

Leaders in a market are thought leaders, thought leadership is message based

Build great messages for yourself or your company that start with a named problem that needs to be solved for your customer or your organization

Recognized leaders have built “journey messages”; they showcase their intermediary wins to validate their journey

The real test of a great message is how your message is retold.  Leverage your visibility and recognition; maintain differentiation, aura, and momentum

Check out more about Executive Alliance @ www.execalliance.com

We talked about some of the trends to lookout for in technology as well as the importance of supporting math and science education for women and girls.

Thank you again to Heather Rocker bringing all these wonderful Women in Technology into the studio for a fantastic show.

P.S. Check out the after-show video
