Booth 61 at Atlanta CEO Council with Blake Patton 3 03 2014I really enjoyed my friend, Blake Patton, dropping by Booth 61 earlier this week at the Atlanta CEO Council event. I first met Blake about 8 or 9 years ago during one of his earlier entrepreneurial ventures. Today, Blake is the Managing Partner of Tech Square Ventures, Atlanta’s newest and very exciting early stage venture fund. Blake was most recently the General Manager & Entrepreneur-In-Residence at the ATDC, one of the oldest and one of the premier technology incubators in the country. Blake knows how to spot an early stage company that has the greatest chance of success. I believe Blake will be very successful and his investors delighted with the results of Tech Square Ventures. Listen to Blake’s interview and you will understand why I and many, many other people are bullish on the Atlanta technology scene.

What would your life be like if your body craved sleep- as much as 16 hrs per day? Could you work? What would your family life be like? In America, approximately 5% of the population has this problem-hypersomnia. Hypersomnia is a large group of disorders characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) or prolonged nighttime sleep (> 10 hrs/night) over a 3 month period. This condition can have a direct or secondary cause and occurs in men slightly more than women. Symptoms often begin to occur in late teens or early twenties. Hypersomina can be disabling, is poorly understood and the medical understanding of hypersomnia is in its infancy.

There are no known cures for hypersomnia. However, there are treatments (usually medications) that can help the patient to improve their quality of life and have more waking hours. These medications typically fall into three categories: stimulants, non-stimulating, wake –promoting medications and sodium oxybate. The Emory University Sleep Disorders research team has been doing some work using somnogen type medication that appears to influence tha GABA activity. The team also completed a study that examined cerebrospinal fluid in hypersomnia patients which resulted in a breakthrough in determining the cause. The hope is that in the future, with this new information, new rational approaches can be devised for treatments of patients suffering from hypersomnia.

For expertise in this segment, we have tapped Dr. David Rye, and internationally known and respected researcher and leader in this field to lend his expertise and experience to educate listeners and followers about hypersomnia. Listeners can find more information at www.hypersomniafoundation.org.

Booth 61 at Atlanta CEO Council with Sandy Hofmann 3 03 2014What a treat to be able to spend time with the Atlanta Gadfly, herself, Mrs. Sandy Hofmann. Sandy is one of the most energetic and giving people in our Atlanta technology community. Name any organization in this city and Sandy has been involved, chaired, or received it’s highest honor. Sandy’s latest gift to our community is chairing a committee for the Atlanta Regional Commission. Sandy shared highlights of her work on this committee during our time together. Let’s all hope and pray that Sandy and her team are very successful because they will make Atlanta an even greater city for all of our citizens.

James Ball

James Ball co-founded TrustWorkz® after more than a decade of experience helping small business owners to integrate better tactics and strategy into their marketing efforts. As the World Wide Web became a more predominant vehicle for marketers to drive a better bottom line, his focus shifted toward leveraging the incredible power and connectivity of the internet to better meet the objectives of business through Inbound Marketing.

In early 2008 James co-founded an internet directory that was designed to help the businesses of North Georgia obtain a more visual presence online. The company was acquired in less than two years by a local media company. Of interest to many was the fact that the company marketed itself by using social media exclusively.

James is known for his expertise and success with hyper-local marketing tactics and his skill with search engine optimization (SEO).  He has achieved widespread respect and notoriety among his peers and clients as a skilled, if not counter-cultural marketing practitioner. James is always ready to speak professionally in an effort to teach others, quite candidly, the things that he has learned while pursuing his passion to help small businesses succeed.

James enjoys living in the North Georgia Mountains with his wife and daughter and a pair of beloved Boston Terriers.
