From Ordinary to Extraordinary: Mike Hill’s Blueprint for Local Business Success

Running a business is exciting, challenging, and—when done right—deeply rewarding. In this episode of North Georgia Business Radio, host Phil Bonelli welcomes back Mike Hill of Trenton Services for a powerful sequel conversation about transforming small and medium-sized businesses into high-performing, profitable enterprises.

Mike Hill, an experienced business consultant and author of The Extraordinary Business, shares the strategies he uses to help entrepreneurs thrive. From tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) to preparing for the unexpected, his advice is rooted in both practicality and proven success.

The Power of Data and KPIs

Early in the conversation, Mike emphasizes that great decisions are built on great data. He encourages business owners to invest in proper infrastructure—like cloud-based tools—and to automate processes such as customer surveys and invoicing. Tracking performance data allows owners to measure quality, monitor profit margins, and identify areas of improvement.

One memorable example? A propane company he led implemented route optimization (even mimicking UPS’s “right-turn-only” efficiency strategy) and saved hundreds of thousands of dollars. As Mike puts it, KPIs are not just numbers—they are roadmaps to better decision-making and stronger margins.

Exit Planning and Crisis Management

Beyond daily operations, Mike stresses that every business will change hands—whether through sale, succession, or an unforeseen event. Many owners overlook exit planning, which often takes two to three years to fully prepare. From organizing financials to establishing governance and key-person insurance, exit planning protects both the business and the family behind it.

The episode wraps with a discussion on crisis management. Mike reminds listeners that downturns are inevitable, but planning for worst-case scenarios allows businesses to not just survive—but emerge stronger. Building cash reserves, creating flexible plans, and turning slow periods into productive “make lemonade out of lemons” moments are hallmarks of resilient businesses.

Your Next Step

Whether you are an entrepreneur looking to improve profitability, prepare for the future, or weather your next storm, Mike Hill’s insights are a masterclass in local business leadership. Financial Planner vs. Business Exit Planner: What’s the Difference?, with Bill McDermott, Host of ProfitSense

In a commentary from a recent episode of ProfitSense, Bill McDermott, The Profitability Coach, offers an insightful comparison between a financial planner and a business exit planner, emphasizing the significance of both for entrepreneurs.

Bill’s commentary was taken from this episode of ProfitSense.

ProfitSense with Bill McDermott is produced by John Ray and the North Fulton affiliate of Business RadioX® in Alpharetta.

Transcript

Financial planner versus business exit planner: what’s the difference? And why you need both? I want to talk a little bit about this. Imagine you’re the proud owner of a thriving business. You’ve spent years building it up from scratch, late nights, early mornings, and more coffee than any human should consume.

Now as you’re starting to think about the next chapter, you realize there’s more to this story than just putting your feet up on a tropical beach. Enter the financial planner and the business exit planner, two professionals who play very different roles in your entrepreneurial saga.

Your financial planner is like Dr. Watson, a Sherlock Holmes sidekick. Steady, reliable, and keeping everything in order while you solve the mysteries of your business. But when it’s time for a big complex sale like selling your business, you bring in the business exit planner. The Sherlock Holmes of the operation to crack the case and get you the best deal.

Here’s some positives and drawbacks for each. The financial planner, they see the big picture in all aspects of your financial life, not just the business. They help with your personal goals, everything from retirement to that dream vacation, and they’re with you for the long haul, adjusting your plan as life changes.

However, while they’re great with personal finance, they may not be as sharp on the business side. They have a wide range of knowledge and skills, but they may lack depth in complex areas like business exits. The Business Exit Planner. They know the ins and outs of selling a business, can maximize its value.

They have focused expertise, meaning they’re laser focused on your exit strategy and help keep you from leaving money on the table. They help you craft a plan tailored specifically to your business timing and goals. On the flip side, they have a more narrow scope, meaning they’re all about the business exit and less about your overall financial health.

Lastly, timing is key. A business exit planner is useful when you’re ready to exit, but not much help before that. It’s all about knowing when to call in the right expert. Your financial planner is essential for keeping your financial house in order throughout your business journey, but when it’s time to sell, the business exit planner ensures you leave on top.

In our story, using both advisors meant the business owner didn’t just retire to that tropical beach.

They bought it.

What’s Your Story? E58

In this episode hosts Austin and Landon, interview guest Scott Snider, president of Exit Planning Institute. Scott shares with us why Exit Planning is important for business owners to talk about and consider regardless of how many years the company has been in business or how old the owners are.

Life happens and unexpected events can take a turn on the business so being prepared and being proactive is the safest and most productive route to take when owning a business.

A high school Janitor at a young age grows into an entrepreneur, owning his own lawn care business and successfully selling his business at 24 years old, Scott’s story is nothing shy of inspiring and informative. Scott educates his listeners and approaches Exit Planning by emphasizing it is not scary!

Exit-Planning-Institute

Exit Planning Institute (EPI) is a professional education company that provides education, training, credentialing, advisor support and development, and connectivity to the business owner for professional advisors.

EPI is the only organization that holds the Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA) credential. The credential is the most widely endorsed and accepted exit planning credential in the marketplace.

Scott-Snider-Tycoons-of-Small-BizScott Snider is the President of the Exit Planning Institute (EPI) and the Operating Partner of Snider Premier Growth, a small family investment company. At EPI, Scott is responsible for the strategic direction of the organization along with overseeing the company’s operations and chapter development.

Since joining EPI, Scott has expanded the organization regionally, nationally, and globally, providing a transformational educational experience to advisors from all specialties across the globe. He leads his EPI Global team from the Cleveland headquarters office.

Scott Snider is a nationally recognized industry leader, growth specialist, and lifetime entrepreneur. Two of Snider’s biggest talents include market penetration and rapid growth strategies. In fact, Snider launched his first business at the age of 17, which he grew exponentially, winning accounts from larger competition, and establishing notoriety in his local marketplace.

At 24, he sold to a strategic buyer (his first “exit”) and joined forces with Chris Snider’s private exit planning and M&A firm, Aspire Management, who at the time, was looking to dominate Northeast Ohio’s exit planning space. Within one year, Scott took Aspire from an unknown startup to one of the most influential boutique advisory firms in Cleveland, citing over 13 publication pickups, a full client book, and a COI network that included every specialty from across the exit planning ecosystem.

With their passion for business strategy and serving owners and advisors alike, Snider and Snider purchased EPI, introduced the Value Acceleration Methodology, wrote an award-winning book, and effectively increased the business size by 10x. Scott Snider thrives on helping advisors learn how to educate clients, achieve market distinction, and deliver real results.

In 2018, Snider released his first book, Fishing for Value: A Short Story of Succession Planning, Business Growth, and Exit, which is a case study eBook that helps owners and advisors tackle the common problems that arise when an entrepreneur recognizes that transition is approaching on the horizon. This book was released and utilized at the 2018 Exit Planning Summit in Nashville and is now available on Amazon Kindle.

In 2021, Landon became a Certified Business Exit Consultant® (CBEC®) to help entrepreneurs plan to exit their businesses by counseling owners about exit options, estimating the value of the business, preparing the business for exit and tax considerations.

Landon enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife, stepson, and new baby twins. He grew up in sunny San Diego and loves visiting his family, playing a round of golf with friends, and many other outdoor activities. Landon tries to make a difference in the lives of children in Las Vegas as a part of the leadership team for a local non-profit. He regularly visits the children that we work with to remind himself of why it’s so important to, “be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

Landon received his B.S. from California State University Long Beach in business marketing and gets the rest of his education through the school of hard knocks via his business owner clients.
