Today, Schwegman and I sat down to learn about Georgia Podiatry, Inc. Dr. Evan Brody founded Georgia Podiatry after practicing several years in a large multi-site group. He has since added two more locations to provide more convenient access to the care of their foot and ankle specialists. Dr. Brody sees patients with the gamut of foot and ankle problems, including patients experiencing limb-threatening diabetic ulcers. While he is a surgeon he recommends surgery to correct a problem only after non-surgical corrective options have been explored to give the greatest outcome with the least disruption in the patient’s daily life. He brought with him Dr. Ashish Kapila, his colleague who works with him in their Austell office. Dr. Kapila joined the practice recently and provides care for patients with traumatic/sports injuries, diabetic and non-diabetic foot deformities such as charcot, and patients with limb-threatening wounds in addition to more general foot and ankle problems. As a practice they place much emphasis on patient experience with regard to how they interact with their patients as well as design of the office—no frosted glass wall will greet you when you walk up to the front desk at Georgia Podiatry.

In fact, it was a boys’ club waiting for a revolution. So they decided to raise their glasses to toast an idea that eventually became Vixen Vodka. This award winning company is poised for national expansion and is the perfect marriage of a sexy flirty brand and the smoothest gluten-free vodka you’ll ever taste. I had a chance introduction with Rick Tapia of La Bodega Interacional and founder of JR Revelry Bourbon during his appearance on our sister show “Let’s Talk Small Business“, sponsored by the Georgia Minority Supplier Developmental Council (GMSDC) just before we were going to be talking with LeeAnn of Vixen Vodka on Midtown Business. On “Let’s Talk Small Business” he was celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month while talking about his involvement with the GMSDC and the launch of his new product. Given the chance to sit down with two innovative entrepreneurs who were launching their own brand of spirits we were glad he was able to stick around and talk more about how JR Revelry came to be. La Bodega Internacional is a wholly minority-owned producer of specialty craft premium spirits. Rick spent 17 years in the alcohol beverage industry, gaining experience in the gamut of business roles from accounting to brand marketing and more. He knew he wanted to have his own line of spirits and ultimately decided to plant his flag and leverage his working knowledge of the business to develop his own small batch bourbon. He partnered with a well-respected distillery (SPEAKeasy Spirits) in Tennessee to produce JR Revelry, a combination of what he describes as “Some expected and some unexpected” flavor profiles in this excellent bourbon. JR Revelry will begin to hit the shelves later in 2014 and expanding in early 2015. Schwegman and CW are pleased to have been able to sample one of the bottles from his first 20 case batch!

This week Dave and I sat down with Conn Jackson of ConnTV and InspireOne. He’s an accomplished motivational speaker, known for his recent seminar “How to Sizzle”, and his talk radio and tv shows on ConnTV. Conn has interviewed a number of well-known celebrities along they way including, Maya Angelou, Rudy Giuliani, Joel Osteen, Master Shah, Andrew Young, and more.

He left a successful life in the corporate world of finance to put his energy into putting positive energy into the world around him, using his media outlet, ConnTV and shows like Pro v. Conn, and IHeartRadio. He is working to inspire people to grow beyond their internal boundaries to go from good to great (to coin the phrase). Prior to his success in business and now in the public media he was diagnosed with some learning challenges as a child and told he should not expect to succeed in high school; that he should perhaps consider vocational training of some kind. Instead he was blessed with getting his particular learning challenges identified such that he was able to thrive in spite of them, ultimately attending business school at Harvard.

Conn shared several key thoughts that would be useful to anyone listening to this show, be they business professionals or individuals seeking to live a richer, more fulfilling life. In the US alone there are over 20,000 lower extremity amputations per month. As many as 68% of them have not had a basic vascular study to determine if revascularization could help save the leg. This week I’ll talk with Dr. Mohammad Sharif of Village Podiatry Centers, Dr. Doug Redd of Advanced Vascular Resources, and Dr. David Schwegman of Hyperbaric Physicians of Georgia. They’ll be discussing the multi-specialty team approach that is necessary for the best outcomes in patients with limb-threatening wounds. They will talk about important things patients need to know about. This includes things such as how important it is to have a vascular study to see if peripheral vascular disease (PAD) is present. It is important to know that simply checking pulses is not effective enough when lower extremity amputation is a potential outcome. Patients with risk factors for lower extremity amputation need to be followed by a foot & ankle specialist such as a DPM for care along with a certified wound specialist (not just a doctor or nurse who does wound care).
