Hiring a Ghostwriter to Write Your Book, with Hal Clifford, Hal Clifford Associates

On this episode of The Price and Value Journey, host John Ray welcomes Hal Clifford, a seasoned ghostwriter with four decades of experience, to discuss hiring a ghostwriter to write the book you’ve always dreamed about. Hal shared insights into the ghostwriting process, the importance of a good writer-client relationship, and the strategic benefits of publishing a book for business professionals. With a rich background in editing and developing bestsellers, Hal delves into his journey from magazine editing to ghostwriting, the distinctions between ghostwriting, editing, and coaching, and offers practical advice for selecting a ghostwriter. The discussion covers the emotional journey of book writing, the process from interviews to publication, and the business case for professionals to publish, emphasizing that the return on investment largely comes from enhanced credibility and client engagement rather than book sales themselves.

The Price and Value Journey is presented by John Ray and produced by the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX®.

He left Scribe Media to establish his own venture, Hal Clifford Associates, focusing on ghostwriting, editing, and publishing.

About The Price and Value Journey

The title of this show describes the journey all professional service providers are on:  building a services practice by seeking to convince the world of the value we offer, helping clients achieve the outcomes they desire, and trying to do all that at pricing that reflects the value we deliver.

If you feel like you’re working too hard for too little money in your solo or small firm practice, this show is for you. Even if you’re reasonably happy with your practice, you’ll hear ways to improve both your bottom line and the mindset you bring to your business.

The show is hosted and produced by John Ray and the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX®. The show can also be found on all the major podcast apps. The complete show archive is here.

John’s Book, The Generosity Mindset: A Journey to Business Success by Raising Your Confidence, Value, and Prices

The Generosity Mindset, by John RayJohn is the #1 National Bestselling Author of The Generosity Mindset: A Journey to Business Success by Raising Your Confidence, Value, and Prices.

If you are a professional services provider, your goal is to do transformative work for clients you love working with and get paid commensurate with the value you deliver to those clients. While negative mindsets can inhibit your growth, adopting a different mindset, The Generosity Mindset™, can replace those self-limiting beliefs. The Generosity Mindset enables you to diagnose and communicate the value you deliver to clients and, in turn, more effectively price to receive a portion of that value.

Whether you’re a consultant, coach, marketing or branding professional, business advisor, attorney, CPA, or work in virtually any other professional services discipline, your content and technical expertise are not proprietary. What’s unique, though, is your experience and how you synthesize and deliver your knowledge. What’s special is your demeanor or the way you deal with your best-fit clients. What’s invaluable is how you deliver great value by guiding people through massive changes in their personal lives and in their businesses that bring them to a place they never thought possible.

The combination of all these elements is quite different for you compared to any other service provider in your industry. Therein lies your value, but it’s not the value you see. It’s the value your best-fit customers see in you.

If pricing your value feels uncomfortable or unfamiliar to you, this book will teach you why putting a price on the value your clients perceive and identify serves both them and you, and you’ll learn the factors involved in getting your price right.

The book is available at all major physical and online book retailers worldwide. Follow this link for further details.

Bruce Kasanoff

This week I sat down with author and social media ghostwriter, Bruce Kasanoff.  I became familiar with Bruce through his frequent featured posts on LinkedIn Pulse.  It was through one of those posts I learned about his book, “How To Self-Promote Without Being a Jerk“.  We talked about how he got into ghostwriting for businesses looking to improve and expand their social media content, as well his two of his books.

Bruce shared how he had spent several years in marketing, becoming somewhat jaded with the process of the status quo of typical marketing methods.  He described how he had been a writer for the paper at Wharton School and how he enjoyed the process of creating well-written content.  We talked about how, as LinkedIn began to develop contributors for Pulse, their public published content platform, he decided to reach out and inquire if he could provide posts.  His inquiry was accepted and, over 300 posts later, he’s a regular feature on LinkedIn.

Bruce described how he was exposed to the concept of Service First while in business school and how that notion really resonated with him.  He enjoyed the opportunity to be able to write about how to incorporate the idea of being a “successful giver” into personal and professional interactions.  We talked about his book (which I really enjoyed) “How To Self-Promote Without Being a Jerk”, which explains how self-promotion is a natural (and necessary) activity we all engage in throughout our interpersonal interactions.

The caveat of doing self-promotion without being a jerk involves the concept of contemplating how you can help the individual(s) you are interacting with in a given moment before engaging in attempts to achieve your more self-serving goals such as “The Sale”.

We discussed his more recent publication, “Givers Deliver: Grow Your Career By Helping Others“.  Bruce talked about how it’s possible to consider the needs of others while at the same time addressing your own needs, resulting in win-win situations and interactions that ultimately end in greater success in your career.

Bruce’s writing style is very conversational and unpretentious and has elements of humor that keep the reader turning the pages.  It’s clear in speaking with him that he embraces the concepts of “How can I help this person?” and being a successful giver in his daily life.  I enjoyed the opportunity to talk to him about his writing and I look forward to digging into more of his works.  You will too!

Sean's Harvest Market

Sean’s Harvest Market and You Talk I Write

Today we had the opportunity to sit down with experts from Sean’s Harvest Market and You Talk I Write.  Sean Germain and his wife, Amber Chaney (also a working actor), opened their first location for Sean’s Harvest Market in January 2014.  The thing that makes that an interesting fact is that the eatery/market is an open air setting with a dining bar where patrons can watch their food being prepared.  The day they opened it was 7 degrees!

Sean talked about the fact that they have recently opened a second location on Peachtree based on the success of their Amsterdam Walk site where they got their start.  He and Amber shared how they focus on providing a fresh, frequently–changing menu based on availability of locally-sourced ingredients.  They also sell home-grown vegetables such as tomatoes and berries grown on their NC farm.  With 3 children in the home and a successful acting career on Amber’s part the couple talked about how they juggle busy schedules to follow their passions for food service and entertainment.

Amber has worked as an actor on a number of films such as Hunger Games, Attack of the Morningside Monster, and Cupid’s Requiem.  We had fun joking around sampling some of her accents, laughing about how she’s been able to call on her early life in Acworth, GA, a small community Northwest of Atlanta.

You Talk I Write

Candi Cross joined us and talked about her work as a ghostwriter for a variety of authors and businesses with a story to tell.  She described the process of interviewing her clients, learning what they are trying to convey, and getting a sense of the person or business in order to best represent what they’re trying to get across.  She’s worked with well-known authors as well as executives and corporations.  We talked about the variety of publications she has contributed to, drawing on her 20+ years of writing experience to produce high quality content.  She’s been providing such a high quality of writing she has been able to stay busy for the past 5 years through word-of-mouth referrals from her happy clients.
