Mayor John Bradberry, City of Johns Creek

Mayor John Bradberry, City of Johns Creek on the GNFCC 400 Insider podcast
Mayor John Bradberry, City of Johns Creek

John Bradberry and his wife, Christy, grew up in Sandy Springs. After college, they settled in the North Fulton area in what would later become Johns Creek. When Johns Creek was incorporated in 2006, John, like many other residents, felt that the new city offered its citizens the kind of protection and local control of policies and expenditures that would benefit the citizens directly.

When John married in 2003, they moved into their house in Johns Creek, where he served as the homeowners association (HOA) president of his neighborhood. Through that HOA role, John became increasingly aware of Johns Creek’s challenges and its newly formed government. He began attending City Council meetings and got involved in the Johns Creek Community Association. As a citizen, John started Preserve Johns Creek, a group dedicated to protecting its residential character and quality of life.

Jack Murphy and Nancy Diamond, North Fulton Improvement Network

Addressing the Workforce Housing Crisis in North Fulton, with Jack Murphy and Nancy Diamond, North Fulton Improvement Network (North Fulton Business Radio, Episode 760)

This episode of North Fulton Business Radio featured guests Jack Murphy and Nancy Diamond from the North Fulton Improvement Network. Jack and Nancy joined host John Ray to discuss the pressing issue of workforce housing, namely, affordable housing for essential workers, in North Fulton. The North Fulton Improvement Network started its work as the North Fulton Poverty Task Force, and evolved its focus towards addressing the broader economic development issue of accessible housing for those earning middle incomes, including teachers, nurses, and public officers. The dialogue also touched upon how this housing crisis impacts local schools, healthcare, and the overall economic development of North Fulton. Jack and Nancy emphasized the importance of community awareness, the role of government, private sector, and non-profit collaboration in addressing the issue, as well as potential solutions like changes in zoning laws and engaging the faith community in housing projects. The episode is a call to action for North Fulton residents and businesses to acknowledge and work on solutions for the workforce housing shortage.

To view the Future First: North Fulton Summit held on February 20, 2024, mentioned during the show, follow this link.

John Ray is the host of North Fulton Business Radio. The show is recorded and produced from the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

North Fulton Improvement Network

In 2014, a group of nonprofit and community leaders joined forces as the North Fulton Poverty Task Force to focus on raising awareness for the needs of those living and working in the community who experience financial vulnerability. However, as our research demonstrated that living in our region is challenging at multiple income levels — including those well above poverty — we renamed our organization the North Fulton Improvement Network. Now, we are a think tank that gathers research, resources, and perspectives on the interconnected issues impacting our community.

The North Fulton Improvement Network serves as a platform to provide education on the reality of living in North Fulton County and to bring together resources that currently address financial vulnerability. We are a network made up of the whole community — businesses, stakeholders, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, political leaders, and the general public. With a central belief that we need all hands on deck to address these systemic issues, NFIN works to make North Fulton a thriving, equitable, and affordable community.

NFIN serves the six cities that comprise Georgia’s North Fulton region: Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton, Mountain Park, Roswell, and Sandy Springs. We center our work on five main areas— 1) workforce housing, (2) income and employment, (3) transportation, (4) child well-being, and (5) food insecurity. All of these aspects of community both impact and are impacted by financial vulnerability. By supporting innovative private and public solutions that address one or more of these fields, we believe that we can build a North Fulton that is thriving and prosperous for all community members.

Johns Creek Arts Center

Stephanie Donaldson, Johns Creek Arts Center (North Fulton Business Radio, Episode 454)

Three weeks into Stephanie Donaldson’s tenure as the new Executive Director of the Johns Creek Arts Center, COVID lockdowns hit.  Her experience in the organization, starting years before as a volunteer, coupled with her dedicated team of employees and volunteers, proved to be a potent combination, one that resulted in the Center reopening only eight weeks after lockdowns to provide summer camps for children. Joining host John Ray, Stephanie recounted her journey with the Center, her determination to be open for the community, their numerous programs and community outreach, the mental and psychological therapy that art delivers, the many ways the community can help, and much more.

North Fulton Business Radio is broadcast from the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Johns Creek Arts Center

The Johns Creek Arts Center was founded in 1996 as the Warsaw-Ocee Arts Center with the purpose of providing art services to audiences in north Fulton County.

The organization changed its name to the Johns Creek Arts Center in 2006 when we moved into our current location on Abbotts Bridge Road in the City of Johns Creek. The arts center facility boasts an outstanding clay and ceramic studio, a digital arts lab, and instruction in a wide variety of visual media. JCAC also has an expansive outreach program that conducts classes and workshops in more than a dozen locations in surrounding communities.

The Johns Creek Arts Center strives to inspire artistic development by stimulating individual creativity and devising a catalyst for personal and community growth by providing quality art instruction and outreach programs.

The Johns Creek Arts Center’s vision is to be a community arts center providing affordable quality arts education to the residents of North Fulton and surrounding communities.  We offer a wide and diverse variety of adult and youth classes, after-school art enrichment programs, outreach programs for seniors, and outreach programs for under-served low-income youth.

Stephanie Donaldson, Executive Director, Johns Creek Arts Center

Stephanie Donaldson, Executive Director, Johns Creek Arts Center

Stephanie Donaldson has dedicated nine years to the Johns Creek Arts Center. She began as a volunteer developing the “Student to Senior” program bridging together local high school students and residents at assisted living facilities to create art. Following this, Stephanie accepted the position of Registrar & Payroll Director. She developed a membership management program, directed the afterschool program at seven Fulton County Elementary schools, and created and executed the Center’s first Holiday Artist Markets.

In May of 2018, Stephanie was promoted to the position of Deputy Director. Within this scope, she oversaw the development of a new website for the arts center, worked to create community relationships for increased revenue through fundraising, sponsorships, and donations, and curated the Center’s first art auction fundraising gala in November of 2019.

In February of 2020, Stephanie was thrilled to be appointed Executive Director of the Johns Creek Arts Center. Unfortunately, the Center closed three weeks later due to COVID. Determined, Stephanie pioneered an opening plan to move forward 8 weeks later re-opening with 10 weeks of summer art camps. The Center’s doors re-opened in May 2020 with 300 children in camp during the first summer of COVID!

The Johns Creek Arts Center has been open ever since with growing enrollments in all programs and exhibitions. Proving hard work and dedication can overcome anything. Stephanie has served as a volunteer on many different levels; girl scout troop leader, basketball and soccer coach, president of band boosters, owner and operator of a rescue farm for horses and dogs.

Stephanie continues to give to her community, currently as a member of Leadership Johns Creek, Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce board member, Rotary Johns Creek North Fulton, and the School Governance Council.

It’s through Student Leadership Johns Creek, and Executive Director Irene Sanders joined host John Ray to review the program and its history, current projects, how students can apply, how businesses can become involved, and much more. North Fulton Business Radio is broadcast from the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Student Leadership Johns Creek

Student Leadership Johns Creek was created in 2012 because of the success of Leadership Johns Creek.

Student Leadership Johns Creek is a collaborative effort of our business and civic community to provide leadership training to our local youth.

Student Leadership Johns Creek selected its tenth class of students in March of this year.  The program begins in August 2021 with a one-day team training event and will conclude in April with an announcement of the upcoming class, a celebration of the first-year students and a graduation for the second-year students who receive graduation cords (which they can wear at their respective school’s graduation) and certificates of completion. Applications will be available to rising sophomores and juniors in December 2021.

Irene Sanders, Executive Director, Student Leadership Johns Creek

Irene Sanders was named Executive Director of Student Leadership Johns Creek (SLJC) in 2014.

SLJC is a highly competitive two-year leadership program open to students that attend Innovation Academy, Centennial, Chattahoochee, Johns Creek and Northview high schools. During the first year of the program the students complete a community group project and learn about city, county and state government through various program days. In the second year the students work more independently producing an on-line portfolio and a shadowing project.

In addition, Irene coordinates nine of these students each year who are members of the Secretary of State Ambassadors program. This is a statewide competition to promote civic engagement. SLJC has won the competition three of the past four years and in 2017 was the first high school team ever to facilitate a mayoral and city council debate in the entire State of Georgia.

They were recognized by the Governor, Secretary of State as well as the City of Johns Creek. Ever since, this revolving group has facilitated every candidate in the city of Johns Creek.

Irene has been a fitness professional for over 40 years; instructing group fitness classes at many area gyms including the Atlanta Athletic Club and the YMCA. When COVID hit, she switched gears and became a Peloton junkie and has not regretted it for a minute. Although her husband played professional football for both the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions, she is an avid New Orleans Saints fan.

She and her family have lived in Johns Creek since 1988, prior to it becoming a city.
