In this edition of Global Leader Radio!™, we discuss how to develop into a legendary leader by staying relevant and legitimate – both personally and professionally. Alvin C. Miles interviewed Carl Jefferson as he shared several game-changing leadership strategies that can help us grow from being “legends in our own mind”, to becoming “legends in our own time.”

Here are seven takeaways from our discussion:

  1. “Business is the business of relationships!”
  2. Think differently about change.
  3. Stay current and relevant through development, reading & education.
  4. “Becoming comfortable can produce a false sense of being legendary.”
  5. Consider using the “A-B-C-D rule” when motivating others.
  6. Leaders should be aware of who they are first.

  7. Customize your strategy to ensure you are serving others individually.

Carl provides great insight to help you think more like a global leader of the future. Add his ideas to your leadership toolkit to help increase YOUR influence. Leadership IS a conversation!

Carl Jefferson / Senior Vice-President, Organizational Leadership & Talent Management Solutions, Careers in Transition

Carl C. Jefferson is a Lifetime Member of the National Association of African Americans in Human Resources (NAAAHR) and brings over seventeen years of Human Resources and Talent Management accomplishments to his first term as the Association’s Vice Chairman.  Under Carl’s leadership, as a two-term National President of NAAAHR, the Association has doubled its national presence and executed over 200 leadership meetings and conferences on Human Resources, Talent Management, Diversity & Inclusion and Performance Management.

Mr. Jefferson is a Human Resources Executive and Talent Management Officer whose career assignments have included Chief People Officer with Al Copeland Investments; VP of Human Resources and Organization Development Consulting with Wachovia Corporation and Sr. Director of Human Resources & Talent Management with Denny’s Restaurants. In each of these roles, he served as a senior business partner to executives and community leaders in customizing enterprise-wide employee engagement and people leadership initiatives.

He earned a BA in Psychology from the University Of Baltimore, and two graduate degrees from The Johns Hopkins University — MS in Organization Development & Human Resources Management and an MBA in General Management.  He recently completed his PhD coursework in Organizational Leadership at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore.

Carl is passionate about HR, Diversity & Inclusion and Talent Management and believes that organizations who invest in strategic human capital planning, mass career customization and inclusion initiatives outperform businesses that operate the HR function as an administrative cost center.  For Jefferson, iconic business success is achieved through high levels of employee engagement and quantifiable performance management solutions.

He is based in Atlanta, GA and serves on several non-profit boards to support youth in achieving positive career and education outcomes.  He is frequently interviewed and quoted in the national media and is a sought after speaker, lecturer and facilitator on human resources, inclusion, and people leadership themes.  He is also a member of the Society for Human Resource Management and International Leadership Association.

In this edition of Global Leader Radio, we discuss ideas that can appear counterintuitive to traditional thoughts of leadership, yet can increase your ability to influence! Jeremie Kubicek joined host Alvin C. Miles to explain a humble approach to increasing your ability to lead. Be prepared to shift your paradigms of leadership!

Here are seven takeaways from our discussion:

  1. Leverage your influence to impact others.
  2. “Humble leaders helps promote a cause, not looks for applause”.
  3. Relationships are more important than opportunities.

  4. Focus on finding “people of peace”.

  5. Start with “DNA”, progress to the “Skeleton”, then to the “Skin”, not “Skin” to “Skeleton” to “DNA”!

  6. What are you 1) trying to prove 2) trying to hide and 3) afraid of losing?

  7. Write a “lessons learned” at the end of each year.
  8. Being “abnormally imbalanced” on principles increases your “overall balance”.

Listen to Jeremie as he and Alvin unpack these takeaways. Then add Jeremie’s ideas to your leadership toolkit. Leadership IS a conversation!

Derreck Kayongo/The Global Soap Project

is a social entrepreneur and the founder of The Global Soap Project. An executive and development expert, Derreck Kayongo has more than 15 years experience developing strategic social campaigns within organizations for cause-related advocacy, public policy, issue management, and community organizing. His work has made a profound contribution in raising awareness aimed at realizing permanent solutions to global poverty.

Kayongo’s journey from child refugee to fearless visionary is filled with moments of inspiration (along with the benefits of good, old-fashioned sweat equity) that make him one of the most popular – and authentic – speakers on the circuit today. From Africa to Atlanta with nothing but a dream and tenacity, Kayongo beat the odds, earned an education, and has served in leadership roles in some of the world’s most respected non-governmental agencies (NGOs) since 1994. Today, he shares his vivacious spirit and invaluable experience in the areas entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, global health, social justice and professional engagement with audiences in both the corporate and not-for-profit worlds.

Derreck Kayongo’s ability to motivate others to understand the role their work and skills can play in problem solving is one of the many reasons he was chosen as a finalist for the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year Award. Add to that the mantra of being a voice for the voiceless through his noble work of giving back, including dedicating his life to improving the lives of marginalized and vulnerable people across the globe: he has worked with the American Friends Service Committee as Program Director for the Southeast Peace Education program; joined Amnesty International as the Director of the Southeast Region; and currently serves as Senior Advocacy Coordinator for the Southeast region with CARE International.

In 2009, Kayongo and his wife Sarah embarked on a new journey pursuing their life-long passion of starting an NGO of their own. The Global Soap Project focuses on repurposing partially-used soap from hotels into new soap for needy populations, particularly in Africa. To date, The Global Soap Project has been able to donate 9,000 bars of soap to Swaziland, 5,000 bars to Kenya, 10,000 to Ghana, 1000 to Uganda and another 3,000 thousand to Haiti.

Accolades:

Derreck Kayongo is a proud naturalized U.S. citizen. He has been recognized as a 2011 CNN HEROES finalist and a COX Enterprise nominee; honored by Congressman John Lewis with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition; is currently writing his autobiography; has been featured in more than 20 news stories in the U.S., featured on Fox News as part of the Real American story series; featured on CNN with Fredricka Whitfield.

Experience:

Since 1994, Derreck Kayongo has given more than 300 speeches on key issues related to poverty reduction in Africa; mainly on water and sanitation, soap, HIV/AIDS, Child Soldiers, Health and Sanitation, Impact of Landmines in Africa, Countries in Conflict and role of basic Education for Girls in Africa, et al.

Business RadioX Host Dr. Tim Morrison Interviews Author Jim Elledge – Business RadioX

September 22, 2011 by lee kantor

On Tuesday September 20th, 2011, Atlanta Business RadioX Host Dr. Tim Morrison sat down with author and Kennesaw State Program Director Jim Elledge to talk about the upcoming PUBLISHERS, AGENTS & MEDIA INSTITUTE, which will be hosted at KSU this October.

As the two talked, Elledge detailed the many ways that Kennesaw State University supports writers. For example, the program he directs, The Master of Arts in Professional Writing (MAPW) degree is a professional graduate degree program that prepares candidates for a wide variety of writing-related positions in business, education, publishing, and the arts. He further noted that many non-traditional students complete this program and use writing as a way to expand creativity in their current career or to transition to a new career.
