Lori Shepherd with Arizona Humane Society and Tiffany House with Gift Planning Institute E28

Lori Shepherd with Arizona Humane Society and Tiffany House with Gift Planning Institute E28

The Mission of Arizona Humane Society is to save the most vulnerable animals and enrich the lives of pets and people.

Their lifesaving programs, including the Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital™, Mutternity Suites, Kitten Nursery, Bottle Baby Kitten ICU and Parvo Puppy ICU save the lives of pets routinely euthanized in shelters. AHS’ comprehensive medical, behavioral rehabilitation, surrender intervention and spay/neuter initiatives have helped them save an additional 80,000 lives over the last five years and become a safety net for the Valley’s most vulnerable pets. Lori Shepherd with Arizona Humane Society and Tiffany House with Gift Planning Institute E28

As a modern open admissions shelter, the Arizona Humane Society sees cases daily that are beyond the scope of imagination – abuse, neglect, abandonment. Their Ethical No-Kill Philosophy ensures that they never euthanize a pet for space or length of time. And although they can not save them all, there is not a day that goes by where they don’t try.

Lori-Shepherd-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXLori Shepherd is the Planned Giving Manager for Arizona Humane Society. In that role, she helps connect donors interested in planned giving with the many ways that they can join Arizona Humane Society’s Legacy Circle; such as including AHS in their will or trust, creating charitable remainder trusts, or naming AHS as a beneficiary to an IRA or life insurance policy.

Another exciting program at AHS that Lori loves to share with donors is their Continuing Care Program. This program is a special benefit provided to Legacy Circle members. Pets who are enrolled in the program and have owners who predecease them are placed with loving forever families who have been carefully selected by AHS staff.

Lori loves connecting people with pets and their passion for animal welfare.

Junior Achievement with Anne Landers and ASU Lodestar Center with Nicole Almond Anderson E16

Continuing education outside the traditional classroom is important for creating leaders of all ages whether it’s the ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation and their undergraduate, graduate or certificate programs designed to provide professionals with the tools they need to accelerate social impact or Junior Achievement of Arizona and their unique programs empowering K-12 students to be successful.

Nonprofit professionals and advocates of a strong workforce will want to tune in to hear how these two organizations are making great strides to build strong communities not just in Arizona, but worldwide!

For the last 60 years, Junior Achievement of Arizona (JA) has been empowering the futures of millions of Arizona students by giving them the knowledge and skills they need to manage their money, plan for their future, and make smart academic, career and economic choices. Delivered by 9,500 business and community volunteer mentors, our hands-on, age-appropriate programs focus on three key areas: financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship.

Serving more than 80,000 students each year and over 2 million since its founding, JA is shaping the college- and career-readiness conversation, and we play an important role in Arizona’s workforce and economic development. Our programs help students connect what they learn in the classroom to the real world, and demonstrate how learning correlates to earning – knowledge critical to empowering today’s students to be successful, contributing members of society in the future. Junior Achievement with Anne Landers and ASU Lodestar Center with Nicole Almond Anderson E16

We serve students with diverse backgrounds and socio-economic status throughout Arizona, with primary focus on providing our programs to students from low-income households.

We are a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization wholly dependent on the financial and volunteer support of individuals, foundations and businesses.

We have two offices – headquartered in Tempe, where our two JA BizTown® facilities are located, and another office in Tucson, serving our Southern Arizona students and partners. We are a member of Junior Achievement USA.

Anne-Landers-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXAnne Landers is the Senior Director of Marketing and Development for Junior Achievement of Arizona, a Tempe-based nonprofit that prepares 83,000 primarily low-income children to succeed in work and life each year by educating them about financial literacy, career readiness, and entrepreneurial thinking. She has been with the organization for four years and is the organization’s first marketing director in 20 years.

Before coming to JA, she was the Interim Director at an international community development nonprofit, Life In Abundance, where she oversaw the implementation of U.S. based operations of programs abroad.  She  began her career at a start-up advertising and PR agency, David and Sam PR (Decibel Blue), where she was one of the agency’s first two employees.

Anne holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from ASU. She lives in Gilbert with her husband, two soon-to-be school-aged sons and black lab.

100 Women Who Care Valley of the Sun and Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at Maricopa Community Colleges E7

100 Women Who Care Valley of the Sun and Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at Maricopa Community Colleges E7

With more than 24,000 nonprofits registered in the State of Arizona, it can be difficult for nonprofit founders to rely on passion alone to have their mission attract the attention of donors and volunteers. Luckily the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy has expanded to Arizona bringing with it their mission to increase the fundraising capabilities and impact nonprofits have in their communities. Not only did we learn more about the curriculum provided by SIP to move these nonprofits forward but also the trend of giving circles, like 100+ Women Who Care Valley of the Sun.

Listen in as guests Kim Tarnopolski, co-founder of 100+ Women Who Care Valley of the Sun and Brent Boardman, Philanthropy Education Project Manager for Sanford Institute of Philanthropy discuss how their organizations are making philanthropy happen in Arizona and how you can get involved, too!

100women_gray revised

100+ Women Who Care Valley of the Sun is a local philanthropic group of women who meet quarterly, contribute locally and connect personally to benefit well deserving charities. Their members are like-minded, passionate women who nominate local nonprofits in an effort to bring awareness, education and funding to those causes. Ultimately, one charity is selected each quarter to support monetarily. The ladies are leveraging their resources so their small gifts ($100 per quarter) add up to a significant donation to a local charity ($10,000 per quarter).

The chapter has four sister groups that meet around the Valley of the Sun on a quarterly basis – Ahwatukee, Scottsdale, East Valley and West Valley. Their goal is to donate $100,000 annually to local charities in the Phoenix metro area. To them, it is not about just signing a check; it is about caring.

Kim-Tarnopolski-with-100-Women-Who-Care-Valley-of-the-Sun-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXKim Tarnopolski is a community steward who has made a Valley-wide impact to better the lives and opportunities for others. She is selfless in giving to the causes she believes in. She donates with her energy, her talent, her dollars and her time. Her corporate background includes roles in community building, philanthropy, business consulting and event planning. Everything she does is driven by her desire to bring communities, individuals and causes together so an impact is made, and the world is a better place because of it.

Kim is the Chief Community Builder and driving force behind 100+ Women Who Care Valley of the Sun (100+ WWC). 100+ WWC is a philanthropic group of passionate women who meet quarterly to identify local charities in need. Kim, along with Jacqueline Destremps, Stephanie Millner and Jenn Kaye, launched the organization in 2015 with a goal of donating $500,000 in five years to local nonprofits. Today, there are four sister groups who meet around the Valley with donations totaling almost $300,000.
