Preface Project 4th Annual Childhood Literacy Benefit Gala

Founder and Executive Director, JT Wu & Heather Phillips, Director of Educational Development

Preface is a national 501(c)(3) philanthropic initiative that empowers communities to combat early childhood illiteracy and secure foundational educational opportunities for the next generation!

Their model works by first pairing a local high school and local elementary school together as Preface Partners. Their expert teams then work with the high school administration to select and train student leaders (“Preface Ambassadors”) in clinically-endorsed educational best practices, including finger-led reading, dialogic responses, voice inflections, and dyadic scaffolding.

Preface Ambassadors culturally and linguistically reflect the communities they serve, allowing them to maximize engagement capacity with young students most in need of educational assistance and mentorship.

Ambassadors work directly into the elementary school classrooms to act as free supplemental resources for local educators on the ground, allowing for highly personal engagement and reading assistance in small group classroom settings!

Preface’s relational model has helped elementary school students make gains in literacy skills nearly twice as fast as their peers, while high schoolers gain firsthand service experience and a newfound appreciation for careers in education.

Additionally, Preface has been recognized by the GA Dept. of Education as an innovative World Languages program and is advised by experts affiliated with a wide variety of institutions, including the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement, McKinsey & Company, J.P. Morgan Chase, Microsoft, and Princeton University.

Dr. Mike Looney, Superintendent, Fulton County Schools

Dr. Mike Looney has served as the Superintendent for the Fulton County School District (FCS) in Georgia since June 2019. In the middle of his first year on the job, he became the first school leader in the state to be faced with reacting to the unknown – a confirmed, positive case of COVID-19. He immediately jumped into action, calling upon his 28 years as an educator, 15 years of previous experience as a school superintendent in Tennessee and Alabama, as a retired marine, father and community leader to guide the district through two years of COVID-19 protocols and safety measures, all while maintaining a focus on the mission of educating students.

Despite the pandemic, his goals remained consistent. He continued with a focused set of key priorities including dropout prevention, literacy for all, CTAE expansion, STEAM programs, middle school reform, leadership development, and solid financial management. He also led the development of the Bridge to Success plan, the district’s three-year comprehensive strategy and transformational investment to help students recover from learning loss resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure student achievement, growth and success.

As the superintendent of the AAA-rated school district, Looney is passionate about ensuring academic excellence and paving the way to post-graduate success for the district’s more than 89,000 students who attend 108 schools. He is deeply committed to the school board’s mission to educate every student to be a responsible, productive citizen.

Beginning his educational career as a substitute teacher, while working on an MBA, Looney rose to becoming an award-winning national speaker on education, including being named Tennessee Superintendent of the Year in 2015. Dr. Looney received his Educational Specialist degree and Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Alabama and his bachelor’s degree in Business Management and master’s degree in Education from Jacksonville State University in Alabama.

Looney currently serves as a member of the Governor’s Advisory Board, Board of Directors for the Development Authority of Fulton County, Board of Directors of the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, and a member at North Point Community Church.

Looney is the proud father of four adult children, grandfather of two, and husband to Jennifer Looney. A successful business owner and professional skydiver, he recently added becoming a trained Wing Walker to his list of accomplishments.

Building the Pipeline of STEM Talent for Tomorrow’s Workforce Needs E29

It’s no secret that Arizona is an attractive place for technology companies to call home. But with more technology companies being founded locally and relocating to Arizona from out-of-state, how can we ensure we have enough qualified technology talent to fill highly technical positions?

The August 2022 episode of the Arizona Technology Council’s AZTechCast podcast featured experts including Julie Bonner, director of communications at FreeFall Aerospace; Claire Conway, Arizona STEM ecosystem programs manager at SciTech Institute; and Betsy Hargrove, superintendent of the Avondale Elementary School District. These leaders joined Karen Nowicki, president and owner of Phoenix Business RadioX, and Steve Zylstra, president and CEO of the Arizona Technology Council and SciTech Institute, in discussing the importance of STEM education in building the pipeline of technology talent for today and tomorrow’s workforce needs.

Throughout this hour-long episode, this panel of STEM experts spoke about how the growing number of technology companies calling Arizona home is creating an intensified demand for qualified talent to fill technical roles. But to hire talent effectively, our panel of experts recommended shifting the conversation away from “developing the pipeline of STEM talent” and towards focusing on students and their career pathways.

Stardust-logo

Stardust Non-Profit Building Supplies provides quality reclaimed materials for reuse. Founded in 1997, Stardust was created when a local philanthropist and founding Board member was about to undertake a complete home remodeling project. As with any major remodeling project, the first step is to remove everything from the home, essentially gutting the structure in preparation for rebuilding.

On the weekend before the demolition was to begin, the Founder told several friends to take whatever they wanted out of the house. When the Founder and his wife returned to inspect the property prior to demolition they were surprised to discover every usable material had been removed from the house including cabinets, plumbing fixtures, lighting and electrical supplies and flooring. The Founder’s friends used the materials to remodel their own homes, sold items to those who could not afford the prices of large retail stores or donated items to others in need. It is from this humble beginning that Stardust was born.

Over the past 25 years, Stardust has increased its focus on diverting usable building materials from local landfills while providing a resource for low income homeowners who are interested in remodeling their homes. Stardust operates retail warehouse stores selling building supplies donated by manufacturers, distributors, contractors and individuals. This process diverts over 5.0 million tons of reusable building materials from local landfills every year making new and nearly-new materials available to our community at 50-80% off retail prices.

Proceeds generated by Stardust Reuse Centers are used to support Deconstruction and Gifts In Kind programs. Stardust Deconstruction services offer removal and pick-up of materials to further encourage recycling and environmental stewardship. Stardust Deconstruction crews remove useable building materials from homes and businesses in return for donation of the items removed. Gifts In Kind, operated in partnership with Valley of the Sun United Way, annually distributes over $22 million in usable materials donated by local retailers such as Wal-Mart and Home Depot to nonprofit organizations for use by their clients or to support their operations.

Stardust’s Gifts In Kind program supports over 400 non-profit agencies in Maricopa County and touches the lives of over 200,000 individuals and their families every year. It is through these community service programs and partnerships that Stardust is able to serve a wide range of individuals from young to elderly, all living at or below the poverty level.

Karen-Jayne-Phoenix-Business-RadioChief Executive Officer, Karen Jayne has over 30 years of experience in non-profit and for-profit leadership, management, program design, and fund development.

In 2011, Jayne was appointed to CEO of Stardust and in her tenure she has increased diversion rates of usable building materials and launched the Gifts In Kind program which has distributed more than $75 million worth of reusable household items to fellow nonprofit organizations.

She holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Regis University in Denver, Colorado. She has served in leadership capacities on the board of the Organization of Nonprofit Executives as well as the national Building Materials Reuse Association and Social Enterprise Alliance Arizona Chapter.

Currently she serves as a board member for the Arizona Recycling Coalition and a member of USGBC AZ Market Leadership Advisory Board and the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits Policy Council.

Building Community One Relationship at a Time E25

Another great LIVE show in the books! It was great to have Randy and Lloyd on the show together. Not only was there alignment in the conversation around conscious business, community focus, and education improvement, there is also a new relationship built between the two of them in the Phoenix Business Community. This is another beautiful example of how we can make change in the community- one relationship at a time.

These two are making amazing change in the Phoenix community and showcasing the importance of building strong communities. Along with the discussions of culture and community, there were some great tidbits and takeaways from the conversation that can be acted on immediately.

What were some of the takeaway tidbits?

  • Never discount anyone
  • Articulate who you are
  • Everyone wants to make a difference. Just find what is meaningful to you

Just because the recording is over, doesn’t mean the involvement stops there. There were some great discussions that include some actions that you can take to get involved.

MIND MONEY MOTION Elena Zee with ACEE and Lupe Camargo with Perspective Financial Services

Financial success is 20% head knowledge and 80% behavior. So it’s crucial to be sure we have a good foundation of knowledge and understanding. Personal finance is a life skill that needs to be taught in our schools and reinforced at home. Elena Zee from the Arizona Council on Economic Education, shares how Arizona is educating students as part of the new law passed requiring personal finance as a graduation requirement. Childhood is often the beginning of our money script messages in our head and then consumer marketing knows how to trigger emotions to impact our purchasing, not always for our own good. Lupe Camargo, from Perspective Financial Services, discusses our habit loops and how we can make positive behavior change when it comes to money decisions or any area we want to improve in our life.

Our mindset and body/mind connections are key factors that impact our health, success, and happiness in life. Not sure where to start or what next step to take? Listen in to what our guests have to share and challenge yourself to act on one of their tips. Elena offers fun ways to help children practice critical thinking when it comes to money decisions, how to consider the opportunity cost when you make your own personal purchase decisions, and encourages us to focus our actions on the question “what kind of life do I want to live?”. Lupe reminds us of the science behind marketing, steps we can take to work around our brain’s tendencies in order to be successful in making change and how we can overcome that “I am not good with money” script in our head.

The ACEE envisions a world where all school-aged children are empowered through economic and personal financial literacy to make informed and rational choices acee-vertical-1-page-001throughout their lives as consumers, savers and investors, workers, entrepreneurs, citizens, and participants in a global economy.

Our Mission is to reach and teach every Arizona student to become financially and economically responsible in work and life.

Elena-Zee-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXElena Zee is President and CEO of the Arizona Council on Economic Education. Prior to this role, Elena had worked in the global financial services industry for more than twenty years, with her first job as an econometrician developing predictive modeling to launch new products at American Express in New York. She was then promoted to Director of International Operations responsible for customer service, business growth and process improvement worldwide.

Elena’s extensive work and travel internationally brought her to Arizona to build the international information management MIS and business analytics infrastructure and teams. Elena has a Master’s Degree in Economics from Columbia University and Double Bachelor’s degrees in Economics and Math from Wellesley College. She is a graduate of Lodestar American Express Leadership Academy Class VII and Valley Leadership Class 40. She is also a Certified Financial PlannerTM, and taught financial planning and economics at universities.

Elena is very passionate about education, professional development, economic empowerment, and international exchange, having served on the boards of Global Economic Education Alliance, Organization for Nonprofit Executives, National Association of Economic Educators, Phi Beta Kappa of Greater Phoenix, and Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Arizona. Elena has represented the City of Phoenix multiple times to visit China for cultural, education, tourism and business exchange.

Four-Peaks-for-Teachers-with-Four-Peaks-Brewing-Company-and-Treasures-4-Teachers1

Four Peaks for Teachers with Four Peaks Brewing Company and Treasures 4 Teachers

Four Peaks Brewing Co. and local partners will provide classroom supplies to thousands of teachers throughout Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada with its annual ‘Four Peaks For Teachers’ Classroom-Supply Fundraiser.

Four Peaks Brewing Co.’s highly anticipated “Four Peaks For Teachers” classroom-supply fundraiser is celebrating its ninth year by expanding its footprint beyond Arizona to also include Nevada and New Mexico. In partnership with organizations like Treasures 4 Teachers and Teacher EXCHANGE, Four Peaks and volunteers will fill 6,500 boxes to provide thousands of teachers with much-needed school supplies.

Four Peaks’ co-founder Jim Scussel created this campaign in 2011 when he learned from customers at Four Peaks that teachers often struggle from a lack of basic supplies. In an effort to help, Four Peaks petitioned customers, staff, and family to donate supplies for teachers to pick up at the brewery. What started from humble beginnings has since become an expansive, multi-state effort that grows each year and has resulted in the donation of more than 12,000 classroom supply boxes to date!

“It’s humbling to see how ‘Four Peaks For Teachers’ has grown to impact more and more teachers over the years,” Four Peaks co-founder Jim Scussel says. “It’s imperative we support our educators, now more than ever. They are tasked with nurturing and shaping young minds, and it’s difficult to believe they are asked to do so without proper supplies. I think we can all agree that without them, we would all be lost! We could not have executed this program without our many partners and volunteers. Thank you to all!”

Those looking to participate can donate to the campaign beginning June 4 by:

  • Buying beer. Throughout June, a percentage of sales of Four Peaks beer at Four Peaks pubs and participating retailers will be set aside for Four Peaks For Teachers.

  • Purchasing State 48 tees at Four Peaks locations (proceeds benefit Treasures for Teachers)

  • Participating in the charity raffle by purchasing $5 raffle tickets at any Four Peaks location. Raffle prizes include a custom Four Peaks cruiser bike, signed merchandise from Arizona sports teams, concert tickets, gift cards, and more. Raffle will run June 4-July 19.

Jess Neill, a teacher and instructional coach for the Laveen Elementary School District, has participated in Four Peaks for Teachers since the program’s inception nine years ago. She says the program is vital—especially for new teachers.

“First-year teachers legitimately have nothing,” Neill says. “They don’t realize they need things like staplers, or scissors, and their school districts might not provide them.”

Part of why Four Peaks for Teachers is so great, she says, is because the kits that are donated come with those things young teachers assume they’re automatically given. And the costs of those items add up. Neill says that she spent $1,000 on supplies during a nine-month period early in her teaching career, and though the school district she’s in currently is much better about providing equipment for teachers, she still spends hundreds of dollars a year on extra supplies for her students.

“In an ideal world, we wouldn’t need Four Peaks for Teachers,” says Neill. “But it’s good to know we have it.”
