In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share Dr Fitness’ favorite meal recipe. If you guessed it involves fish you would be correct. This meal is built around 3-6 ounces of omega 3 rich smoked salmon or flavored tuna – your choice.  And if you guessed lots of veggies then you are right again. Add this to the fish: avocado, mushrooms, onions, walnuts, craisins, and chinese noodles to give it some crunch. It doesn’t get any better than that for the doctor. Walker, Janice croppedOriginally from Indianapolis, Indiana, Janice Walker attended Purdue University and became a registered nurse.  She has been an RN for 25 years, focusing on mental health, and becoming a “Traveler”, going from hospital to hospital, state to state providing her unique services.  Recently, Janice formed a company called Emotions to very deliberately enhance the physical, mental and spiritual health of seniors in the face of life’s challenges.  Her company provides seminars, programs, workshops and motivational speaking events as a resource for the education and development of seniors and their families.  Janice tells us that her work is also her passion and her ministry.  Janice can be reached at emotionsjw@yahoo.com.

Sonuga, ChristianaLike so many of our guests, Christiana Sonuga became interested in working with senior adults as a volunteer.  In her case, she started volunteering at a hospice in Southeast Georgia when she was 15 years old.  Christiana went on to get both undergraduate and graduate degrees in social work from the University of Georgia.  Immediately after graduating, she took a job at an Athens-area homeless shelter.  In Christiana’s words, “it was one the of best jobs I’ve ever had!”  After a two year stint as a social worker at Lifecare of Lawrenceville, she now works as a medical social worker in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Center at Emory University Hospital.  Christiana can be reached at 404-712-4367, or visit Emory’s website at www.emoryhealthcare.org.

Gentry, JerryRounding out today’s line-up, Jerry Gentry is Chaplain for Crossroads Hospice.  Early in his tenure at Crossroads, Jerry volunteered to be on the Ethics Committee.  He was quickly assigned the position of Chairman of that committee (careful what you ask for!)  Jerry was raised in Clinton, Mississippi, attending school there all the way through college.  He then went on to seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, ultimately receiving both a Master of Divinity and a PhD in Ethics.  Jerry moved to Atlanta after seminary. He worked as a freelance writer for 11 years,  publishing a book about Grady Hospital called “Grady Baby – A Year in the Life of Atlanta’s Grady Hospital.”  Having worked part-time as a hospital chaplain in seminary, Jerry took a year at Atlanta Medical Center to learn the role more thoroughly, then took a position at Crossroads Hospice.  Jerry can be reached at (770) 270-9898, or visit their website at www.crossroadshospice.com.

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain some common exercise mistakes. Are you too busy to stretch or properly warm up before you exercise?  Make the time to get your heart rate and body temperature up and your muscles warmed up before you do any vigorous exercise. Do you try and do too much too soon or make up for lost time? Don’t do that – ease back into your exercise program. Don’t overdo things right out of the gate and ask for help if you are not familiar with the equipment. That’s why there are personal fitness trainers around – to protect you from yourself. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend award winning health journalist Robert Davis, author of The Healthy Skeptic. Robert is kind of like the MythBusters guys for the health and fitness industry. Today he shared his thoughts about anti-aging clinics and their controversial human growth hormone programs. Robert and Dr Fitness discussed the recent NY Times article profiling Cenegenics, a popular anti-aging clinic. These kind of clinics take advantage of the law that says growth hormones can be legally prescribed if there is a deficiency in the patient – but as you age your levels decrease naturally so a doctor can almost always show that the patient is deficient. These clinics usually tout some anecdotal evidence of success and downplay some of the side effects of using hgh or human growth hormone, testosterone, etc. Side effects which can range from joint pain to diabetes. If you are considering using these kind of anti-aging methods please learn from the women who used hormone replacement therapy. While that therapy was used for decades it wasn’t until recently that results revealed that the risk of stroke and cancer outweighed any benefits of the treatment. Be careful when putting hormones into your body. To learn more about what Robert is up to go to www.everwell.com
