On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Katie Bell, who leads Gallup’s well-being initiatives, including the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. Each day (for 25 years) they will poll 1000 Americans and ask them questions about their life, their well-being and their health. This massive undertaking will create a database of health and well-being data that will provide government, business and healthcare leaders with a consistent metric to measure the health, wellness, and prevention needs of the US population. They have to call about 26,000 people each day to get their 1000 interviews. Some things they’ve learned so far are that Colorado is among the best states in terms of well-being and as Jamie Oliver discovered West Virginia scores among the lowest. In terms of jobs – park rangers have among the highest well-being scores while truck drivers and manufacturer line workers have among the lowest. Two good predictors of high school graduation in teens are 1-the belief that there is something better for them outside of high school and 2-having an adult in their lives who believes in them. Check out how your city and state are doing at their website www.well-beingindex.com or at the Gallup website www.gallup.com
In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share tips on how some former fat people lost weight and kept it off. It seems they eat breakfast – in fact breakfast is their biggest meal of the day. A guest once told us to eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. Next, they exercised daily – they accumulated about 60 minutes of physical activity daily. So try and shoot for about 10,000 steps a day. They limited time in front of the TV. They also created some sort of support system or routine that helped them overcome setbacks. By pre-planning for setbacks ahead of time you will be less likely to be derailed by them when they occur – and we know they will occur at some point. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some easy tips to control those cravings you have for sweets. First, don’t skip meals. When you’re hungry or even worse famished, you will eat anything and everything. If you keep a food journal and track when you eat and how you feel around the time you are eating then you can identify patterns and maybe even some emotional triggers to why you have these sweet cravings. Once you identify when you are most likely to want to eat sweets then try and add more protein to the meal before those cravings occur. This should make the cravings go away. And if you allow yourself to enjoy a taste or small portion of the sweet you crave that might just do the trick as well – just don’t overdo it. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. N. Wallace Kelleman, “Wally” to her friends, is nearly an institution in the Atlanta Elder Law community. A lifelong student, Wally attended law school in the late 1980s, and graduated with two law degrees – one from Western New England College of Law, and one from Emory School of Law. After 38 years as an RN, Wally recognized a gaping hole in the services available to Atlanta’s senior population, and formed The Kelleman Law Firm. As one might expect, Wally spends time with clients helping with a broad range of issues, including estate planning and asset protection. But more importantly, in Wally’s own words, she is “the conscience of the client or family.” She is asking the difficult questions like, “who will support you when you are no longer able to support yourself?” Wally can be reached via e-mail at attynwk@aol.com, or by phone at (770) 736-0369. Visit her website at www.kellemanlaw.com, or visit www.nolo.com and drill down to Gwinnett County, Georgia.
After earning degrees in both English and History, Dan Munster did what anybody would do with those two degrees. He went back to school to study Law! Upon completion of his law degree, Dan had the privilege of working for Atlanta Legal Aid for five years. During his tenure there, he was allowed to choose the area of law he wanted to practice. Dan chose the Senior Citizens Law Project as a result of his relationship with his paternal grandmother, and her experiences as a senior. Dan started his own private practice in 1999, and now is one of Georgia’s foremost experts in Medicare and Medicaid. Dan can be reached 404-920-0521, or visit his website at www.georgiaelderlaw.net.
Boar’s Head Provisions is a fourth generation family-owned business that began in New York City in 1905. The founder, Frank Brunckhorst, had a very simple philosophy back then—-sell only superior quality delicatessen products—no compromise. While competitors, faced with the challenges of rapidly expanding distribution, have compromised on their standards over time, Boar’s Head never has.
Key to the family strategy of careful expansion that holds to the roots of Frank Brunckhorst’s vision is their use of independent distributor’s such our guest on Thursday, April 15, Stan Epperson, Founder of Deli Provision Co. Inc. Stan launched his business in 1981 and, working closely with Frank’s descendants, has continued to uphold the high Boar’s Head standards as he has grown his business in the Atlanta region over the past 29 years.
Stan will share the rich history of Boar’s Head and the history of his own successful business, Deli Provision Co. Inc. There is much to learn about how to expand without jeopardizing the values that are at the heart of a family-business.
But Stan’s story doesn’t stop there. After pouring himself into building Deli Provision Co, Inc, he has followed another passion that will be carried on by the next generation of Stan’s family—philanthropy. Just as in building a business, creating a legacy through philanthropy can be fraught with pitfalls, so we have asked Stan to share the wisdom that he has gained along the way.
Rich history, successful expansion, uncompromising values and leaving a legacy are all covered in our show with Stan and you won’t want to miss a bit of it.
Our guest:
Stan Epperson graduated from Butler University in 1971 with a degree in Business Administration. He then started his work career with Oscar Mayer and Co. in sales in Indianapolis, IN. Over the next 10 years he held different sales management positions in Seattle, LA and Syracuse NY. In 1981 he left Oscar Mayer and Co. and started Deli Provision Co. in Atlanta GA, which is the distributor for Boar’s Head Brand Products in the Atlanta metro area.
He is on the board of directors of several charities including the Brain Tumor Advisory Board at Duke University, the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation, GOAL Scholarship Board and the Community Foundation of North Georgia. He is also the trustee of the Epperson Family Foundation. Stan’s personal interests include golf, snow and water skiing, hiking, biking and squash.

Strength Training: More Weight Less Reps vs Less Weight More Reps

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share the health benefits using more weight vs less weight when strength training. The age old debate which is a better workout less weight with more repetitions or more weight with less reps. Does more weight make you bulky and less weight make you lean? A recent study showed that women who worked out with more weight but less reps had better results – they lost the most weight and had lower body fat. Remember to you want to use enough weight (or resistance) to make it difficult – toward the end of a set you should have a hard time doing one more rep. If it is too easy to blow through a set then you should increase the resistance and/or the weight. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Three Chicks began their discussion on the importance of making positive choices. All were determined to get the message out that from an early age, girls have choices. And women of ALL ages can be empowered by the choices they make throughout their life!
I was lucky enough to have 2 of these 3 fabulous chicks in the studio with me today.

Sara Cook had a background in fashion design, immediately named the company Choosey Chicks and worked on their “vision”.
As soon as you meet these awesome ladies, you can feel the genuine and heartfelt message their company is founded upon. They wasted no time in getting this powerful message out quickly, creatively and memorably.
