Tax Planning vs. “Tax Telling,” with Seth Peabody, iTxRe

Seth Peabody: Let’s step into the business owner’s mind and go through their experience and what I’ve garnered from them, also being an entrepreneur. Most CPAs do tax telling. They take your numbers, and they tell you what you owe, and you write the checks, and then you see how much pain it is.

They don’t go into being proactive and thinking of ways to. Reduce your tax and knowing the tax code and using it to the business owner’s advantage. So, for instance, we’re here in Atlanta. A lot of us don’t know about the advantages of oil and gas, and the oil and gas companies really have deep pockets, as we know, and they paid Congress off and Congress makes the rules for the IRS.

And so they have advantageous tax code written specifically to oil and gas. To where, for example, you could take $100,000 and invest it in the stock market and it sits there. You can put it in an independent oil and gas fund and deduct a portion of that in the year you make the investment.

So if you’re at a tax rate and you put in 120 and you’re allowed to deduct a hundred thousand, most everybody’s tax rates, roughly 40%—40 percent times a hundred thousand–you just put $40,000 back in your pocket. So that’s different types of tax strategies and thinking about it differently and being proactive and getting ahead of it.

Equal Pay Day and the Ongoing Quest for Pay Equity (Litigators Lounge, Episode 7)

On this episode of Litigators Lounge, hosts Jackie Voronov and Shylie Bannon examine the state of gender pay equity in recognition of Equal Pay Day. Their conversation begins by acknowledging the symbolism behind Equal Pay Day, representing how far into the new year women must work to earn what men did the previous year. Despite the existence of the Equal Pay Act passed over 60 years ago, progress toward closing the gender wage gap has been slow, with women earning on average 84 cents on the dollar compared to men, and even less for mothers and for women of color. Jackie and Shylie further explore how executive-level positions see a wider gender pay gap, contrary to common beliefs that higher education and positions would result in more equitable pay. They also discuss the impact of societal norms on women’s negotiation behaviors, the reluctance to discuss salaries openly, and conducting gender pay audits as a step toward addressing the wage gap. Jackie and Shylie urge listeners, especially women in influential positions, to advocate for equitable pay practices within their organizations.

Litigators Lounge is underwritten and presented by Hall Booth Smith. The show is produced by John Ray and the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX®.

Knowing Where You’re Going in Retirement, with Toby Anderson, SGL Wealth Management

Toby Anderson: The old saying, if you don’t know where you’re going to get there, and everyone’s got goals. Those goals, as with anything–you need to write them down.

And you need to know how you’re going to get there. Everybody has a goal of retiring at some point, but retirement looks different for almost everybody, right? Is that I want to be done at 62, and I’m never going to do anything? “I’m playing golf five days a week.” Great. If that’s what retirement let’s see what that looks like.

Sometimes it’s: “I’m going to retire, but I’m going to get a part time job because I want to.” “I’m never going to retire.” There’s that one. But you’ve got to know where you’re going, and then are you on track to get there, right? Are you saving the amount of money you need to save to have the lifestyle you desire when that day comes?

And it just makes people put everything down on paper. And even from the younger people, just the importance of budgeting—what’s coming in and what’s going out. Every dollar needs to have a purpose, and do you have the guardrails around what you’re doing to make sure your investments are aligned?

You can’t say, Hey, I need to have this amount of money when I’m doing and have your money sitting in cash. It’s just not going to, it’s just not going to work. And people, helping people understand the risks associated with certain levels of stuff and then the risks of not. Some people’s greatest risk is not being risky enough, right? It’s just important.

Shifting Mindsets, Part Four: Stepping Into Your Next Chapter (Hello, Self… Episode 39)

In this fourth installment of Shifting Mindsets, host Patricia Leonard began by reiterating her mission to help listeners convert ‘cants’ into ‘cans’ and get their dreams off the “someday” shelf, and covered ways listeners can step into the next chapter by taking action on their dreams.

She reviewed the key takeaways from the previous three episodes such as removing self-imposed masks and challenging limiting mindsets. She then guided listeners through concrete steps to making commitments and taking action towards their goals.

Patricia encouraged listeners to commit to specific actions in their next chapter, including performing in her High Heels Cabaret productions, organizing local fundraisers, or reaching out for personalized help.

She shared that this series is intended to inspire listeners to move from just talking to truly walking their talk and making significant changes in their lives. Patricia also emphasized the importance of celebrating small achievements as we journey towards our dreams.

Celebrating 50 Episodes of Family Business Radio, with host Anthony Chen and guests Dr. James Connelly, Results Rehab, and Meredith Fingarson, Meredith Fingarson Consulting

On this special episode of Family Business Radio, host Anthony Chen celebrated 50 episodes of the show with two return guests, Dr. James Connelly, Results Rehab, and Meredith Fingarson, Meredith Fingarson Consulting. Both James and Meredith shared their unique entrepreneurial journeys and what they learned along the way. James emphasized the importance of risk-taking, seeking professional help, and learning from failures in the entrepreneurial journey. He shared how his dissatisfaction with the big-company work environment drove him to start his own venture in physical therapy. Mentioning his determination to be the “Chick-fil-A” of his industry, he offered his personalized and attentive approach to healthcare as his unique selling point. Meredith highlighted her transition from executing marketing plans to strategizing them, becoming a fractional Chief Marketing Officer for her clients, and advocating for marketing success while keeping their bottom line in mind. Both guests agreed that embracing risk, maintaining confidence, and giving clients individualized attention are essential for entrepreneurial success.

Anthony closed the show with a brief commentary on taking risks and seeking help.
