Experts Don't Chase

Experts Don’t Chase

Experts don’t chase for a lot of reasons. One reason is that they’re too busy. The unsolicited pitches of a business and life coach prompts thoughts on expertise, chasing prospects, and the unintended signals some professional services providers send. The Price and Value Journey is presented by John Ray and produced by the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX®.

TRANSCRIPT

John Ray: [00:00:00] And hello. I’m John Ray on The Price and Value Journey. Dogs chase, experts don’t.

John Ray: [00:00:10] Sometime ago, a business and life coach connected with me on LinkedIn. Almost immediately, the automated private messages followed in a steady beat. My usual response to all this is simply to ignore. But the bots kept delivering the appeals, though, and they were progressively more urgent.

John Ray: [00:00:32] One note promises that her suggestions can help my business get back on solid ground. Never mind that she’s made no attempt to engage me in any personal way to find out exactly what I do, what’s going on with my business, what my needs are, and even what my favorite flavor of ice cream might be. Nothing.

John Ray: [00:00:55] In all these bots – yes, bots. Automated robot messages – she doesn’t offer me any insights that might help me in my business. Not even a pointer to the book she’s got for sale, an e-book, or even a blog post. Not even a pithy quote. Nothing.

John Ray: [00:01:16] Finally, in the last message I received, I got this, “I get it. You’re busy. But that doesn’t mean I’m giving up on you.” Good grief. That’s awesome. It’s great to know that I’ve got someone out there, someone who doesn’t know me from Adam’s house cat who’s not giving up on me.

John Ray: [00:01:38] Now, maybe you think I’m cranky for my critique, and maybe you think I have something against LinkedIn Sales Navigator or other similarly generation tools. But the tools and the technology aren’t the issue. The problem is how they are employed. These tools can be a godsend for professional services providers legitimately trying to expand their network. When used to chase people, though, with what amounts to spam, these tools devalue the brand you’re trying to build.

John Ray: [00:02:13] I’m thinking about this situation from the point of view of the coach, not me and the hundreds of other people she’s spamming on LinkedIn. Frankly, I feel a little bit sorry for her. She may be the best business and life coach one could ever hire, but that’s not the vibe she’s giving me. The signal she’s sending is that she has to chase people to get business. And that dents my perception of her abilities as a business coach.

John Ray: [00:02:41] If she’s so great, why does she need to chase me or anyone else with automated bots on LinkedIn? She’s not offering me even a glimpse into how she, out of the thousands of business coaches I could find on LinkedIn, might be able to help me with the particular problems that I have. She’s offering me no glimpses of her expertise, even though she clearly has some. Yes, I went to her website and poked around. All she’s doing is chasing.

John Ray: [00:03:10] That’s what dogs do, chase. Experts don’t chase. They’re too busy to chase. And let’s suppose she’s actually fortunate enough to shake out a few leads from this hunting she’s doing. If any of these leads turn into prospects, will this coach be able to command prices which reflect the value she delivers to clients? The chances are slim, I think, because she’s sending signals that she needs the business arguably worse than I or any of our other targets need her coaching. She’s fostering the perception, whether intended or not, that she badly needs the business.

John Ray: [00:03:54] And if you’re a coach who wants to receive prices commensurate with the value you offer, it’s a bottom line killer.

John Ray: [00:04:02] I’m John Ray on The Price and Value Journey. The show archive for this series can be found on your favorite podcast app or at pricevaluejourney.com. And if you’d like to connect with me directly, you can send an email to john@johnray.co. Thank you for joining me.

RobRobert Hendrix, III w/ Morgan & Morgan

Robert L. Hendrix, III (Rob), is an accomplished trial lawyer who has recovered over $20,000,000.00 in benefits for his clients in over a decade of practice. Rob focuses his practice almost exclusively on representing injured employees in workers’ compensation cases. He has tried cases in nearly every corner of the State in front of nearly every Administrative Law Judge. Rob is currently heading the Columbus, Georgia office of Morgan & Morgan.

In addition to Rob’s trial accomplishments, he is also an experienced appellate advocate. He has handled numerous matters through the appellate process, including at the Georgia Court of Appeals and Georgia Supreme Court. Included in Rob’s appellate advocacy is the reported case of Dekalb Board of Education v. Singleton, 294 Ga. App. 96; 668 S.E. 2d 767 (2008), which was landmark in that the decision allowed for an injured employee to receive income benefits for a psychic injury only after the physical injury resolved.

Rob has been recognized many times for his skill as an attorney. For four straight years (2010-2013), he was named a Georgia Rising Star Super Lawyer, which is published by Atlanta Magazine in conjunction with Law & Politics Magazine. This is an honor recognizing the top 2.5% of attorneys in their practice area under the age of 40. In 2014, Rob was named a Georgia Super Lawyer recognizing the top 5% of all lawyers in their practice area. Rob is the youngest Georgia workers’ compensation lawyer to receive this honor. For three straight years (2012-2014), Rob has been named a Top 100 by The National Trial Lawyers. This is an invitation-only group composed of the top trial lawyers in the country. That organization has also named Rob a Top 40 Under 40 for three straight years (2012-2014). Rob has also been named a Top 40 Under 40 by the American Society of Legal Advocates for two straight years (2013-2014). Finally, Rob has been named one of the Best Attorneys in America by Rue Ratings. This honor is bestowed on less than 1% of attorneys in the country.

Rob takes his obligations to the law very seriously and is active in the legal community, serving in leadership positions at the local, state and national level. He serves as Vice Chair of the Workplace Injury section of the American Association of Justice (AAJ), and formerly served as Editor of the section’s newsletter. Additionally, Rob serves on the Paralegal Education Taskforce and the Convention Planning Committee for the AAJ. Further, Rob serves on the Executive Board as Treasurer of the Workers’ Compensation Claimant’s Lawyers (WCCL) arm of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association (GTLA). Along with his Executive Board position, Rob also heads the Leadership Development committee and serves on the Fee Arbitration Committee. Locally, Rob is a Board Member at Large for the workers’ compensation section of the Atlanta Bar Association. He also serves on the Amicus Curiae committee of the Georgia Legal Foundation, which is dedicated to addressing specific appellate issues in the workers’ compensation community. Lastly, Rob is a member of the Workers’ Injury Law Group (WILG), American Bar Association and the State Bar of Georgia.

Rob is a frequent lecturer on the local, state and national level. He has given presentations at every major legal conference involving Georgia workers’ compensation law, including: the annual ICLE seminar in St. Simon’s Island, GTLA annual convention, State Bar of Georgia, State Board of Workers’ Compensation annual seminar, the WCCL annual educational seminar (For Your Eyes Only), Atlanta Bar Association, Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, and Travelers Employer School. In 2013, Rob spoke twice at the AAJ National Convention in San Francisco. Rob has lectured on topics such as turning around the tough case, affirmative defenses, taking depositions, civil discovery in workers’ compensation cases, common mistakes made by employers, independent medical evaluations, developing medical evidence, and case intake. In addition to lecturing, Rob has also authored journal articles for the State Bar of Georgia newsletter (workers’ compensation section) and the AAJ’s Workplace Injury Group newsletter.

Personally, Rob enjoys spending time with his wife (Vicki) and his three children (Sammy, Harrison and Max). When not practicing law, he enjoys traveling to Las Vegas and following his beloved Georgia Bulldogs. Rob has also served as an assistant martial arts instructor in Choi Kwang Do, and is currently working toward a black belt in Hap Ki Do under 6th degree Master Kathy Tusa.

She received her undergraduate degree from Georgia State University, Summa Cum Laude, and went on to law school at University of Georgia School of Law. Since graduating from law school in 2008, Sara has devoted her legal practice solely to Social Security Disability. This is an area of law that is very close to her heart since she witnessed her mom suffer from cancer twice while Sara was a child and then a young adult; this truly opened her eyes up at a young age to the profound effect an individual’s health can have on the quality of life for an entire family.

As an attorney, Sara has represented over a thousand Social Security claimants throughout most of the southeast with a great success rate. She has represented claimants all the way from the initial application process through the U.S. District Court Appeals. She has extensive experience with working with the Social Security Administration, medical providers, educators, employers, and expert witnesses to gain a favorable outcome for her claimants.

Sara often gives presentations to different community organizations that serve the disabled so that she can offer health care providers and social workers more education on the rights of the disabled.

Founded in 2010, the Guild is organized to promote, protect and further, in every lawful manner, the common interests of the members and the licensed brewing industry in Georgia.  Nancy Palmer is a perennial student of the beverage industry, having spent a decade exploring all facets of the business.  Though she’s concentrated on wine for most of her career, she’s found tremendous pleasure in learning about both beer and spirits.  Her favorite aspect of the business is certainly education – she enjoys making the complicated and often intimidating world of high-end beverage accessible and interesting for anyone with any background.

Nancy’s career began while working for Five Points Bottle Shop in Athens, Georgia. After graduating from the University of Georgia she worked at several establishments not only waitressing and bartending, but also conducting many wine classes at area restaurants.  She then went on to become the wine buyer for Athens’ largest volume package store, Five Points Bottle Shop West. After a very successful stint there, she moved on to try her hand at the distribution side of the beverage business. She worked for Avant Partir representing the best international wine portfolio in the state and became familiar with the best restaurants and shops throughout Georgia and South Carolina.

EleanorEleanor R Benson/Moondog Growlers

A lawyer by training, Eleanor became interested in craft beer back in law school when craft beer meant only Anchor Steam, Sierra Nevada & Sam Adams. Twenty years later – she had the opportunity to enter the craft beer business as the co-owner of Moondog Growlers. With three locations and over 100 taps – she is keenly aware of the changes in the craft beer industry as well as the challenges facing brewers and retailers of craft brews.  Her love of special beer began way back in the late 80’s while attending GSU law school. Her study group was made up of her beer tasting buddies (fortunately), and together—between bar review sessions—they blind-tasted an array of types and styles of beer (little did she know back then that she was preparing for a career that’s a far cry from practicing law). Eleanor has enjoyed successful careers in law, marketing, and interior design, so she jumped at the chance to combine her background and creativity with one of her favorite hobbies – craft beer.
