Succession Planning with Steve Fisher and Bryan Preston, on Family Business Radio with host Anthony Chen

Succession Planning with Steve Fisher and Bryan Preston (Family Business Radio, Episode 70)

In this episode of Family Business Radio, host Anthony Chen is joined by Steve Fisher from Strategy Partners Group and Bryan Preston from Gaelic Business Solutions for a candid conversation about the real challenges that prevent family businesses from growing and transitioning successfully.

Steve shares how his journey from being an engineer to becoming a longtime CFO, which included navigating a stressful acquisition and downsizing, ultimately led him to advise business owners on strategic, operational, and financial issues. He explains why most businesses plateau because the owner becomes the bottleneck, how weak financial reporting and “shoebox” accounting quietly destroy valuation, and why a buyer is purchasing the company’s future potential, not the owner’s heroic history.

Bryan draws on his corporate background and his experience growing up in a declining mill town to explain why healthy small businesses are vital to the communities they serve. He discusses the danger of running a family business like a family instead of a business, how to free up owner time by building repeatable processes and delegating effectively, and why owners should be spending a significant portion of their week working on the business instead of just in it.

Together, Steve and Bryan present practical low-hanging fruit that family business owners can address immediately, including establishing clean books and standard operating procedures, as well as tackling difficult questions about succession, legacy, and the true requirements for successfully passing the torch.

Family Business Radio is underwritten and brought to you by Anthony Chen with Lighthouse Financial Network. The show is produced by John Ray and the North Fulton affiliate of Business RadioX®.

Key Takeaways from This Episode

  • Start with the end in mind. Steve says owners should think about their exit when starting a business, as every owner will leave eventually, and the only question is how much control they will have over that transition.
  • Owner dependency kills value. Both guests note that the greater the business’s reliance on the owner’s daily involvement and crisis management, the less attractive and valuable it becomes to potential buyers or future successors.
  • Clean financials are nonnegotiable. Many family businesses rely on checkbook accounting or neglect their balance sheets and cash flow, making it difficult to run the company and even harder to sell it. Establishing solid, understandable financial statements is a foundational step.
  • Documented processes are an asset. Written, current, and consistently followed standard operating procedures make a business more turnkey, easier to scale, and significantly more appealing to successors or acquirers who need to understand how operations function without the owner’s presence.
  • Delegation is about trust and monitoring. When owners refuse to delegate responsibilities to capable team members, it often indicates a trust issue, either regarding the employee or the owner’s ability to supervise effectively. Learning to delegate tasks and then monitor the results is essential for growth.
  • Family must act like a business at work. Bryan highlights that family dynamics, charitable payroll decisions, and unresolved personal issues can undermine performance and value. Buyers will not pay to support family dynamics, so these issues must be addressed well before any transition.

Meijah Lewis on Sugar Daddy Cookies, Jeff Brown on Cybersecurity, on Family Business Radio with host Anthony Chen

Meijah Lewis on Sugar Daddy Cookies, Jeff Brown on Cybersecurity (Family Business Radio, Episode 69)

Family Business Radio host Anthony Chen welcomes Meijah “Mimi” Lewis of Sugar Daddy Cookies and Jeff Brown of TakTik Technologies. Mimi shares how a pandemic kitchen idea became a fast-growing cookie brand, from landing a 4,000-cookie Amazon order to expanding into vegan and gluten-free lines and preparing for a brick-and-mortar location. She explains what she would change about hiring and why family rhythms and faith shape every decision.

Jeff outlines a practical roadmap for small businesses to modernize IT, choose the right mix of cloud services, and harden security, covering AI readiness, backup and continuity basics, and simple controls that prevent costly mistakes.

Anthony closes with a reflection on legacy, urging owners to clarify why and the values they want to pass on to their kids and grandkids, noting that dollars alone rarely sustain a family enterprise across generations.

Family Business Radio is underwritten and brought to you by Anthony Chen with Lighthouse Financial Network. The show is produced by John Ray and the North Fulton affiliate of Business RadioX®.

Key Takeaways from This Episode

  • Product plus story creates traction: quality ingredients and a memorable brand experience open doors.
  • Large early wins signal reliability: delivering a 4,000-cookie corporate order builds credibility.
  • Serve dietary needs well: vegan and gluten-free options broaden the market without diluting the core.
  • Hire deliberately: document processes, set expectations, and protect culture as demand grows.
  • Most firms land on hybrid cloud: balancing cost, performance, and compliance rather than going all in on one model.
  • Do an AI readiness check: data quality, policies, validation steps, and change management come before tools.
  • Security basics matter: backups, encryption, MFA, phishing education, and tested continuity plans prevent downtime.
  • Trust but verify: confirm unusual payment or account-change requests through a separate channel.

Tildet Varon and Leroy Hite on Family Business Success (Family Business Radio, Episode 67)

On this episode of Family Business Radio, host Anthony Chen welcomes back two powerhouse guests: Tildet Varon, founder of Growing with Truth Inc., and Leroy Hite, founder of Cutting Edge Firewood.

Tildet shares how the painful loss of her family’s business in Turkey fueled her lifelong mission to help other family enterprises thrive. She reveals why communication is the root of both peace and profits and how “hidden conversations” within families often shape business outcomes more than strategy or operations.

Leroy recounts his journey of transforming firewood from a commodity into a luxury experience, overcoming years of grueling labor, financial strain, and near-collapse before scaling nationally and ultimately selling the business. He explains why risk-taking, perseverance, and humility are essential traits for any entrepreneur.

Anthony adds his own financial planning perspective, tying together lessons on values, vision, and long-term purpose.

This episode offers hard-won insights for family business owners, entrepreneurs, and anyone seeking to balance grit, growth, and legacy.

Anthony concludes the show with thoughts on crafting a legacy of memories, reminding us that you can’t buy time or memories.

Key Takeaways from This Episode

Tildet Varon, Growing With Truth

  • Silence is often mistaken for peace in family businesses; avoiding hard conversations creates hidden resentments.
  • Communication with clarity, care, curiosity, and compassion is the foundation for both harmony and profitability.
  • Helping families surface their “hidden conversations” builds trust, belonging, and collaboration.
  • Self-awareness and emotional intelligence are essential to breaking barriers and sustaining success.

Leroy Hite, Founder, Cutting Edge Firewood

  • Firewood isn’t a commodity, it’s an experience—people will pay a premium for ambiance, aroma, and connection.
  • Entrepreneurship requires grit: he worked 100+ hour weeks, sold his house, and lived on maxed-out credit cards to keep his dream alive.
  • Success comes from embracing hard things; failure teaches lessons that can power future ventures.
  • Leadership demands humility—outsiders who won’t learn from the ground up make poor decisions.
  • Barriers are opportunities: don’t quit, but pivot and persevere.

Anthony Chen, Lighthouse Financial, and Host, Family Business Radio

  • Financial planning shouldn’t start with numbers; it begins with clarifying vision and purpose.
  • The key question is, “What is my ideal lifestyle and why?” before designing any plan.

Leroy Hite, Founder, Cutting Edge Firewood
Leroy Hite, Founder, Cutting Edge Firewood

Leroy Hite transformed firewood from a mere commodity into a luxury brand featured in prestigious venues including the Oval Office, Netflix, the Today Show, and Fox & Friends. He revolutionized the perception and consumption of firewood by creating an entirely new industry. Leroy’s philosophy centers on the belief that extraordinary results come from embracing discomfort and risk and that growth does not happen when you are comfortable. His journey from having only $12 in the bank to building a premium nationwide brand exemplifies his commitment to breaking conventional boundaries and thinking boldly outside the box.

Leroy’s impact is demonstrated not only by millions in delivered value and a wave of competitors he inspired nationwide, but also by the recognition he has received, such as the Berry College Entrepreneurial Spirit Award and being a two-time 40 Under 40 honoree. Cutting Edge Firewood, which he exited last year, elevated a product often plagued by quality issues—half of the firewood market was bug-infested—into a status symbol of quality and craftsmanship. Leroy’s story is one of grit, perseverance, faith, and relentless innovation, proving that with the right mindset, anything once deemed impossible can become a defining success.

Katie Moore, Sonal Chandler, Diamond Ford, and Teresa Caro on Trademarks, Cybersecurity, Senior Salon Services, and Leadership (Family Business Radio, Episode 66)

In this episode of Family Business Radio, host Anthony Chen welcomes four dynamic women whose work spans business law, cybersecurity, senior hair salon services, and leadership coaching but whose stories are deeply rooted in family, legacy, and personal mission.

  • Katie Moore, founder of Katherine Moore Law, LLC, shares how childhood exposure to trademark law shaped her path and why intellectual property is essential for growing businesses.

  • Sonal Chandler, founder of Minerva Consulting, opens up about the loss of her father, her pivot from corporate cybersecurity to entrepreneurship, and how small businesses can proactively protect themselves in an age of AI threats.

  • Diamond Ford, founder of Don’t Touch My Hair by Hollywood, shares her journey from childhood beauty salons to creating a luxury experience for seniors, reminding us that dignity and care never grow old.

  • Teresa Caro, founder of Liminist, explains how she helps business owners, and particularly family-led businesses, navigate growth plateaus, generational succession, and team dynamics to build something that lasts.

This episode, spanning from trademarks to transitions, is brimming with practical wisdom and heartfelt insight. Whether you’re building a business, protecting a legacy, or redefining success, these stories will stay with you.

Anthony concludes the show with thoughts on crafting a legacy of memories, reminding us that you can’t buy time or memories.

Key Takeaways from This Episode

Katie Moore, Katherine Moore Law, LLC

  • Trademarks protect the identity, value, and recognition your business builds, not just your logo.
  • You don’t have to wait to register. “Intent to use” filings can reserve your rights as you grow.
  • Descriptive names are weak trademarks; creative, distinctive names offer stronger protection.

Sonal Chandler, Minerva Consulting

  • Small businesses are attractive targets for hackers due to limited cybersecurity defenses.
  • Basic protections like strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, and staff training go a long way.
  • Don’t just chase AI tools. Focus on how they fit your business strategy and strengthen operations.

Diamond Ford, Don’t Touch My Hair by Hollywood

  • Seniors want luxury, dignity, and routine in their grooming just like anyone else.
  • Salon environments using nostalgic music and décor create healing, memory-rich experiences for aging clients.
  • Stories from elders—like a 110-year-old who said “right now” is the best time to be alive—remind us to live gratefully and stay present.

Teresa Caro, Liminist

  • Founders often become the bottleneck to growth when they don’t shift leadership mindsets.
  • Succession planning can take seven or more years. Start before you feel “ready.”
  • Build a business that can thrive without you; systems and strategy matter more than solo effort.

Anthony Chen, Lighthouse Financial and Host, Family Business Radio

  • True legacy means living without regret—making memories, not just money.
  • Overworking can cost you the life experiences you’re working so hard to afford.
  • “You can’t buy time or memories”—use your success to support the life you want to live now.

Passing Down Values in the Family Business, with Anthony Chen, Host of Family Business Radio

Family Business Radio host Anthony Chen references a poignant scene from the movie Inception to underscore the significance of sustaining and passing down family values in the business.

Anthony’s commentary was taken from this episode of Family Business Radio. Family Business Radio is underwritten by Anthony Chen with Lighthouse Financial Network.

Transcript

Then, as we’re closing out the show with what’s called Anthony’s Financial Corner here, that’s going to be really hard for me to top these two. So I guess I would just piggyback on the answers with a little bit of a twist, as Andrea was sharing her insights when it comes to the children having their own individual identity and defining the financial planning corner and having that succession discussion.

I can’t help but heaing that, I’m going to steal or probably butcher the line from the movie for those who might be familiar with a movie called Inception at the very end. Where the son was in that kind of hospital deathbed of his father, and he took out that picture and he took out that little flower pinwheel.

And the line was, Yes, I know I’ve disappointed you because I can’t be you. To which the fake father responded by saying, I’m disappointed because you tried. So as a part of World Wisdom for the next gen, your parents are your parents, but as you are running and finding your values, the values that you’re going to hold could be work ethic, could be doing the right thing always, no matter what the cost for the client or something that’s very critical to the family itself that makes the family business successful.

That doesn’t always have to be translated to the exact same business. It could go from plumbing to let’s say HVAC or maybe mechanic work or maybe your law work. But if the absolute value of the family is a strong work ethic, you can have the same strong work ethic in other fields. But it’s got to be a passion that the next generation has passion for.

So if the conversation, again, comes down to communication, what the values are, it could simply be a shift of selling family business, a.) Pass that torch to someone else who will share that same value for business and give the next gen having that same value to a new business venture or business b.), doesn’t have to be the exact same thing, so expand one’s mind when preserving family value and a real asset.

Net worth is the value itself. That’s something no attorney, no accountant, not even myself, the financial planner, can really do the hard job of, that’s going to be a conversation that comes of communication. Values from parents or grandparents to the next generation. Thank you for listening in to Family Business Radio.
