Nelson Mullins and City of Atlanta Department of Procurement

We talked about important business considerations regarding ACA requirements this year, along with the opportunities to do business with the City of Atlanta through the Department of Procurement.  I was joined in the studio by Ann Murray, attorney with Nelson, Mullins, Riley, and Scarborough, and Chief Procurement Officer for the City of Atlanta, Adam Smith.

The ACA business mandates have begun to be implemented on larger scales over the past two years.  As we know, some of the requirements have been pushed back a couple of times, delaying their impact.  But those times are behind us and business owners need to be spending time with legal experts such as those at Nelson Mullins, to assess what their obligations will be regarding providing health insurance benefits to some or all of their employees.

Ann explained the basics of some of these requirements around health benefits for the small business.  She also discussed new reporting requirements that business owners must compile from multiple sources to be in full compliance with the law.

Murray talked about the fact that many business operators mistakenly think they’re exempt from the law’s requirements, failing to see that being a small unit that is part of a larger whole, as in the case of some multi-site businesses, potentially exposes them to have to offer benefits.  Failure to comply can result in significant financial penalties that could literally threaten the business’s viability.

Atlanta’s Chief Procurement Officer, Adam Smith stopped by to share information about the upcoming Business Expo at the Georgia World Congress Center March 31st.  This free-to-the-public event will feature a wealth of information about the numerous needs the city has for a wide variety of goods and services to operate the city’s 15 departments, including the Atlanta airport.

The expo will have sessions where small business owners can learn what is required to be able to bid on these opportunities, as well as how to fully complete the necessary documents contained in a bid to have their bid received and considered.

Adam explained that the city’s needs range from culinary services at the airport, to commodity supplies such as paper, pens, cleaning supplies, etc.  Additionally, the city is looking for engineering services, cleaning services, construction, and numerous others as well.

Smith also talked about certifications available to disadvantaged business enterprises that once obtained, provides these businesses with access to opportunities ear-marked for diversity suppliers.  He went on to distinguish these certifications businesses may obtain from county or state governments, as well as other certification bodies such as GMSDC.

Register for the upcoming Business Expo, hosted by Atlanta’s Department of Procurement at the Georgia World Congress Center, MARCH 31st HERE

Government Contracting

NOWaccount CEO, Lara Hodgson, stopped by the studio to talk about government contracting for small businesses.  I also hosted 3 experts who serve our community by helping children and adults in need of foster care, and help/treatment for developmental challenges and/or mental illness.  Tom Russell and Lori Brickman of Creative Community Services, and Pat Strode of the Georgia Chapter for the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) joined us to talk about the vital role they play for children in foster care, particularly those who face those developmental issues or mental illness.

Lara discussed a recent event where an SBA representative shared information about doing business with the federal government.  Did you realize there’s over $100 BILLION dollars of federal contracts available?  And that there’s ~23% are earmarked for small businesses who are able to fulfill the need for goods and services?

We talked about what to do to prepare to do business with the government, where to go to register, where to go for information on contracts available, as well as resources available that can facilitate accepting government contracts even if invoices are paid slowly.

I also learned that there are over 11,000 children in foster care in Georgia.  The folks from Creative Community Services and NAMI, came by to talk about how they serve our community by working to help this vast population of children in need of loving, safe environments, along with supportive care they require as well if they’re facing developmental challenges or mental illness.

We talked about how important getting treatment and medication is for patients who are dealing with mental illness is. We also discussed how important it is for first responders to be certified to be able to identify and handle persons suffering from mental illness rather than simply assuming they’re criminals.

Tom explained that many of these children lack any real positive role models or mentors

The groups have regular events to raise funds to enable them to provide support and treatment for patients in need.  Be sure to visit their websites for more information on events as well as opportunities to serve with your time as volunteers or mentors.

Government Contractors Association, Modavate, Amyra Tutoring Services, and SuiteLife Systems

I got to sit down with experts from Government Contractors Association, Modavate, Amyra Tutoring Services, and SuiteLife Systems this week.  Recently on LinkedIn I read a great post by Abe Xiong, of Government Contractors Association.  I related to much he shared in his article about his pleasant surprise encounter with a stranger who had hit his car while he was on a trip.  The stranger who had bumped his fender was kind enough to leave their contact number and had already contacted their insurance company about the incident when he called.  I thought it was a great story to share and that inspired me to look into what Government Contractors Association was all about.  Given their expertise in the steps required to secure a contract with a government agency I thought it would be great to have him join us on the show.  Abe shared some excellent information about the association and if you have a business that has a potential to grow through doing business with the government (as Abe points out, the largest customer in the world), membership with Government Contractors Association is a must.  They provide coaching along the way and serve up an array of tips and information that increase the likelihood a company can successfully do business with a government agency.

Abe introduced us to Buki Opanuga, of Modavate.  They’re a digital marketing and technology company.  They help businesses develop a plan for and executing a marketing strategy across the full gamut of digital platforms.  Their suite of services includes web design, SEO, SEM, social media marketing, and more.  They work with a wide range of companies and even organizations such as CDC.  Buki talked about how Modavate came to be and how they had hoped to grow by expanding to include government agencies as clients.  She linked up with Government Contractors Association and took advantage of the helpful services they provide, ultmately becoming 8(a) Certified, which has lead to even more opportunity.  She gives some great advice for business owners thinking about vying for a government contract.

Barbara Culp, of Amyra Tutorial Services, also a member of GCA and benefactor of their expertise, joined us to talk about their K-12 tutoring services.  She shared how she became inspired to open her business and the meaning behind the name she chose.  It’s clear she has a passion for helping children learn and now, by being able to effectively engage with the public school system, she is starting to see great potential for her company to grow.

Kenny Miller is the National Director of Sales for SuiteLife Systems.  They offer a software solution that gives an enterprise a platform through which they can monitor mission-critical equipment for trouble in an effective, easy-to-use interface that lets their users achieve efficiencies in how they monitor/react to problems, and even how they consume power.  Data their solution provides empowers users to moderate the way they manage their power consumption in ways that lead to substantial cost savings overnight.  SuiteLife Systems solutions make sense for a wide variety of enterprises and even organizations like schools and churches that have large operations and/or media networks/content generation services.
