WHY BEST OF HEALTH?

I am a Physician Assistant who has been caring for patients for over 20 years and Family Practice (cradle to grave) is my specialty.

Following the footsteps of three generations of family practice physicians (my father, grandfather and great grandfather) this was a natural and genetic calling that I do not regret.

Given this, I have a unique perspective and it’s time to share that perspective through Ask the PA. As a health care provider, teacher, business owner, patient, and advocate for my family and friends throughout the years, it has been painfully apparent there are disconnects within the current state of health care in the US and throughout the world. It can be confusing and frankly very scary.

It is my goal though this series, Best of Health, to bring people together that are passionate about their roles in the business of health care… and yes, whether or not you want to hear that it’s a business, it is — and that’s the fact. I will introduce to you great, dedicated practitioners and people with a passion for getting the word out about their personal journeys and causes. I will provide information about navigating through a confusing system, asking the right questions and share ways for saving money and time along the way.

It’s time to create change by partnering, empowering, and focusing on the patient, their families and their providers of care. It’s time for you to take the driver’s seat rather than leave your health care solely in the hands of entities such as insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry.

Stay tuned. Here’s to your Best of Health.

Dr. Ellie Campbell
Dr. Ellie Campbell talks pre-diabetes

Pre-diabetes

This week I featured a long-time friend of the show, Dr. Ellie Campbell, of Campbell Family Medicine, located in Cumming, GA.  We talked about a topic I am hopeful many of our followers will both listen to and share:  Pre-diabetes.

How many times have you gone for your annual check-up and been told, “Your labs are normal,” when your fasting blood glucose is >80mg/dl?  Those “normal” results could actually be a red flag that you have Pre-diabetes.

During this phase it’s actually possible to reverse the condition through diet and exercise.  But, as Ellie described, many physicians haven’t yet been educated that they need to be concerned with glucose levels that don’t exceed “normal” limits.  This means that we, as patients, need to be advocates for ourselves and our loved ones.

It is well-known that diabetes leads to a range of chronic and often, deadly, diseases such as heart disease, kidney disease, blindness, stroke, and more.  While we also know it is often challenging to make life-style changes, when you are aware of the risks, it can become more easy to do so.

I am pleased Ellie sat down with us to talk about pre-diabetes, a problem many people can actually do something about if they’re willing to make some of the simple changes she recommends.

Cholesterol Isn’t The Bad Guy In Heart Disease

I recently read an article by a former heart surgeon that talked about the fact that cholesterol isn’t the bad guy in heart disease.  Instead, he argued that inflammation of the lining of the blood vessels caused by sugars and even the “healthy” oils we eat such as corn, canola (Omega-6 oils) is the real cause of what is still the #1 cause of death in America today.

I sat down with Dr. Ellie Campbell of Campbell Family Medicine in Cumming, GA to talk about the article and she was eager to discuss it.  She completely agrees with the premise of the article and shared how the ratio of Omega-3 oils  to Omega-6 oils has grown from ~1:1 or 1:2 to as much as 25:1 Omega-6 to Omega-3.

She also talked about the fact that higher levels of cholesterol in the blood don’t necessarily equate to plaque and heart disease/stroke.  It’s when cholesterol molecules are oxidized and corrupted by inflammatory substances we eat that they become “sticky” and attach to the irritated walls of the blood vessels.

Dr. Campbell shared numerous suggestions for basic changes we can make that will not only serve to reduce our risk for heart disease but in some cases can actually reverse damage already done.

I also brought back Leana Kart, a chiropractor whose practice, Northwest Chiropractic and a member of the Georgia Chiropractic Association to talk about the fact that May is National Posture Awareness Month.  She shared several tips on how to avoid “tech neck”, damage to the spine and neck caused by long periods of chin-down angles to look at a device in our lap.  She also talked about why good posture contributes to keeping us healthy.

The 4 R’s of Gut Health

Did you know that as much as 80% of your body’s immune capacity comes from your gut?  Neither did we.  That’s why we’re glad Dr. Ellie Campbell of Campbell Family Medicine came by to blow our minds(again) with information (The 4 R’s of Gut Health) about ways we can dramatically improve our health.  She shared how she progressed from her traditional primary care practice to a Direct Pay model to get away from the pressure to see more patients, faster, in order to make a respectable physician’s income.  In her office she doesn’t work with insurance companies.  Instead, her patients simply pay a monthly membership fee to have access to her 24 hours a day, 7 days per week (sometimes even when on vacation!).  She also wanted to be able to provide care to her patients that is based on best practices and evidence rather than being simply limited to what an insurance company will or won’t pay for.

https://media.businessradiox.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DR-AVAIL-24-7.mp3

We talked about the fact that, with limited time per patient, prescribing a medication and moving on to the next patient is often the way physicians must conduct their practice.  She shared how allergic responses to foods and other environmental sources are behind many of our illnesses (or mirror many illnesses).  We also talked about how important what we eat and drink is in our overall health.  Dr. Campbell described how food and beverages have such dramatic impacts on our hormone levels and cellular health that we need to look at what we consume much like drugs one can take in a pill.

Dr. Campbell discussed The 4 R’s of Gut Health, going over foods we should eliminate (or at a minimum significantly reduce) from our diets because they cause inflammatory responses in the gut and vascular system (and elsewhere).  Things like wheat and plants from the nightshade family such as tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and eggplant can, for many, create allergic reactions.  The challenge is, many of these allergic responses don’t manifest in immediately-recognizable ways.  It could be a general feeling of malaise, skin problems, GI problems that can emulate reflux, and more.

The 4 R’s of Gut Health (Explained in greater detail in the interview):

  • Remove offending substances from the diet.
  • Replace digestive enzymes, bile salts, immunoglobulins, DAO, and stomach acid where necessary
  • Re-inoculate the bowel with pre- and probiotics
  • Repair gastroentestinal mucosa through proper nutritional support

Opinions may be heated about the efficacy of alternative medicine, but patients are using it and top American medical schools such as Georgetown, Duke, and the University of California are incorporating it into their programs.  Recent CDC data estimates that 38% of Americans use some form of alternative medicine. These patients, collectively are spending $34B per year, mostly out of pocket, on alternative medicine treatments. This accounts for $1 in every $10 spent out of pocket for Americans.  Pain is a common driver for patients seeking alternative medicine care.   Alternative medicine tenents include: 1) caring for the person as a whole vs. symptom and disease management 2) empowering patients to creative lifestyle conditions for optimal health 3) use of the body’s innate healing ability and 4) prevention of disease as a safeguard to future medical expenses.

Therapies and treatments used in alternative health span medication to meditation and often include: nutrition, herbology, spinal manipulation, energy treatments, acupuncture, homeopathy, massage, relaxation and stress management and biofeedback.  It is not all “touchy feely”. High tech is also included as this segment will explore breast thermography as an example.  This segment will provide an overview of alternative medicine from the perspective of principles, evaluation process, treatments, costs, and success stories.
