KrishnanBorn and raised in India, and spending an additional 16 years in South Africa, Krishnan Kalyanasundaram brings a multi-national perspective to his work with seniors in the Atlanta area.  Specifically, Krishnan is the Executive Director of Arbor Terrace of Tucker, a 65 bed community that prides itself on exceptional customer service.  Krishnan tells us that one of the highlights of his day is eating lunch or supper (or both) with his residents in their 15 bed Memory Care community.  He is also very proud of Arbor Terrace’s “Resident Chef” program.  Krishnan explains that each month, one of the residents shares a personal recipe, and is encouraged to oversee the preparation and serving of the meal.  Sign me up!  For a tour of the community, contact Krishnan or one of his staff at (770) 925-9170.  You can also visit their website at www.at-tucker.com.

Reynolds, Alton compressedAlton Reynolds wears a multitude of hats!  He has been serving in the “helping professions” both on the clinical and business side of healthcare for nearly 40 years.  Starting his career providing psychiatric assessments of Navy and Marine personnel returning from Viet Nam, Alton continues to provide these assessments today for seven different hospitals as part of the Peachford Hospital Mobile Assessment Team.  Alton confirms what we heard several weeks ago from the Fuqua Center that depression in the senior community is a problem to be taken seriously.  When Alton is not working in one of his many businesses, he is teaching teenagers Blues Music History as part of the Mudcatz School of Blues.  Alton can be reached at (770) 454-2302.

Givens, Jo Vonn compressedGeorgia Medical Care Foundation (GMCF) helps healthcare providers improve the care delivered to Medicare beneficiaries.  Jo Vonn Givens manages GMCF’s Chronic Kidney Disease Initiative.  Her goal is to educate providers in specific measures for quality improvement in the prevention and care of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).  Jo Vonn tells us that, unlike some other diseases, CKD is largely preventable through lifestyle changes.  Largely the result of Diabetes, Hypertension and Heart Disease, CKD can be managed or prevented through exercise, diet and a personal support network.  Jo Vonn notes that the typical cost for end stage renal failure is in excess of $60,000 per year!   Though her organization primarily deals with physicians and their practices, resources are available to anyone that is interested.  Contact JoVonn at (678)527-3678, or visit the GMCF website at www.gmcf.org.

What Does it Take to Succeed as a Key Executive Non-Family Member In A Family-Owned Business? Hint: A Coach Can Be Key!

March 24, 2010 by angishields

Many family-owned business executive teams include senior-level professionals who are not family members.  Assimilating into the business and achieving success can be challenging both for the family-business and for the executive.

Our show on Thursday, March 25th will feature two guests who can shed a great deal of light on this topic. We will be welcoming Dean Harby, PCC Executive Advisor & Coach with Internal Innovations, along with Fritz Schlabach, CPA and currently the CFO of a family-owned business.  Dean and Fritz have worked together as coach and client,  and Fritz is a seasoned veteran of the family-owned business having served for 20 years in executive roles as a non-family member.

This hour-long  broadcast will explore the role an executive coach can play in guiding non-family members to success within a family business from Dean’s perspective.  Fritz will share his insights and real-life stories of the benefits of taking on a leadership role in a family-business—along with many insights on the challenges and how to navigate the waters.

You won’t want to miss this lively discussion.  And as always, we promise it will be full of useful information and tips, so be sure to have your notebook handy!

Our Guests:  Dean Harbry, PCC and Fritz Slabach, CPA

Dean Harbry is credentialed as a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) through the International Coach Federation and is best know for his executive coaching competentcies.  Dean brings a long history of visionary leadership and managerial leadership to his coaching practice.  He has worked with individuals from banking, finance, technology, manufacturing, media and sales.  As a trusted advisor, he partners with executives to achieve results.

His own career included significant experience with mergers and acquisitions, including a multi-bank acquisition.  His IT skills were honed when he created national IT infrastructures from scratch in financial services environment.  He has served as President and COO and has consulted with State government, educational institutions, financial professional firms, law firms, the auto industry, medical research, nonprofit institutions, boards of directors and leadership training.

Dean’s personal mission is to create clarity in next steps, promoting forward movement.  Dean holds a BA in Organizational Management and is completing his MA/PhD in “Professional Coaching and Human Development” at International University of Professional Studies.  When not helping his clients create forward momentum, Dean can be found on the running trail training for his next marathon–he has completed 20 to date.

Internal Innovations – Telephone 770-783-2765

Fritz has over twenty years of experience as a senior executive in privately-held companies.  Currently holding a CFO role in a family-owned business, he began his professional career with Arthur Andersen in their auditing and small business development segment.  Upon leaving Andersen in 1990, he gained his CFO and senior executive expertise, including the position of COO for a $20 million direct marketing firm, in various industries ranging from manufacturing to management consulting.

He has extensive experience in all aspects of strategic planning, budgeting, process improvement, and management information systems, including specializing in turnaround situations.  Strong interpersonal and leadership skills have enabled Fritz to quickly gain trust and influence with owners/stakeholders as a key executive management team member in these often less structured and fluid environments.

Growing up Amish and serving in the US Marines are two significant forces in Fritz’s background which acted to forge a strong work ethic, a passion for building cohesive teams, and a commitment to excellence.  After leaving the Marines, Fritz graduated with highest honors from Washington and Lee University, having started college with an 8th grade education and a GED since the Amish are exempt from compulsory education beyond the 8th grade.

Today on the Chic Perspectives Show I had on Lisa C. Decker, a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst, and Cheryl Draa, an Interior Designer – both successful and savvy entrepreneurs who shared some great advice from their own areas of expertise and experiences in starting and growing successful businesses.

Lisa Decker , aka Miss Money Matters, is the founder of Divorce Money Matters and a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA™).  As a media resource who has been interviewed by many media sources including CNN, Good Morning America, Business Week, Forbes for Women, The NY Times and Oprah magazine, Lisa is an expert in divorce financial matters, a discreet problem-solver and a trusted advisor to her clients. In addition, she holds Series 6, 63 and 65 and insurance licenses.

Lisa shared some great advice regarding how to “Divorce Your Spouse, Not Your Money!” with good planning early on in the process.  Here are some of the points worth remembering:

  • You need a team to get the best outcome and settlement in your divorce.
  • Put your game plan in place if possible long before you file for the best results.
  • Get organized early on to save lots of money in fees to your attorney and CDFA.
  • There are more peaceful methods of divorcing if you start right from the beginning.
  • Attorneys do not always know what they don’t know.
  • Getting the right attorney and financial advisor are crucial from the start.
  • Know what questions you need to ask an attorney during an interview.
  • 50/50 is not always what it appears to be when taxes are taken into account.
  • Divorce has many pitfalls that you can fall into if you are not aware.
  • The house may be a noose around your neck.  Don’t become attached to things.
  • Understand the short and long term ramifications of the choices you are making.
  • Divorce courts do not have the authority to make creditors abide by your agreement.
  • If your name is still attached to the debt, then you are still legally liable regardless of who has been ordered to pay.
  • Don’t forget the importance of backing up payments owed like spousal and child support with life and disability insurance in case something happens to your ex.
