Brian Borngesser, Tim Stolz, Allison Fillmore

Welcome to the debut episode of Birdies and Beer, an unique lifestyle podcast featuring all things golf and craft beer! Guests for Episode 1 include Allison Fillmore, Executive Director of the PGA TOUR Championship, and Brian Borngesser, co-founder of Gate City Brewing.

Allison Fillmore/Executive Director of PGA TOUR Championship

The TOUR Championship is a golf tournament that is part of the PGA TOUR. It has historically been one of the final events of the PGA TOUR season. Prior to 2007, the field consisted exclusively of the top 30 money leaders of the past PGA TOUR season. Since then, it has been the final event of the four-tournament FedEx Cup playoff, and eligibility is determined by FedEx Cup points amassed throughout the season. Since 2013, the TOUR Championship has been the final event of the season. In addition to providing thrilling competition, the TOUR Championship takes pride in having donated more than $10 million to local charities, primarily benefiting the East Lake Foundation and The First Tee.

Brian Borngesser/Co-Founder of Gate City Brewing

Gate City Brewing partners Brian Borngesser and Pat Rains met in a Roswell Rotary Club meeting ten years ago. The two connected over common interests in home brewing and serving their local community. As the duo made beer, the beer made friends, and two future flagships were born: Copperhead Amber in Pat’s garage, and 1864 IPA in Brian’s. In 2012 the vision for Roswell’s first craft brewery evolved into a business plan, and in 2015 the business plan evolved into Gate City Brewing Company, a local venture still as dedicated to community as the pair who met a decade ago.

Shannon Skains/Dickey’s Barbecue Pit

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is a true American success story. In 1941, Travis Dickey, a World War II veteran, opened the first Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Dallas, TX. Dickey was a true Texas character blessed with the gift of gab and the love of authentic, slow-smoked barbecue. In the beginning, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit was truly a family operation with Travis working the block and Miss Ollie Dickey serving sandwiches. Space on the restaurant sign was rented out to help pay the start-up costs for the restaurant and the menu was limited to beef brisket, pit hams, barbecue beans, potato chips, beer, bottled milk and sodas.

Brothers Roland and T.D. Dickey took over the business in 1967, continuing their father’s legacy of quality, hickory smoked signature meats. Under the direction of the Dickey brothers, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit expanded throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area and quickly became known throughout Texas for mouthwatering hickory-smoked barbecue, popular catered events and the iconic Big Yellow Cups. Franchising began in 1994 after loyal guests and barbecue fanatics demanded more locations. Today with nearly 600 locations in 43 states, loyal guests are what keep Dickey’s thriving in every community.

The brand has come a long way from Travis Dickey’s first location. But, some things never change. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit still slow smokes all meats on-site just the same way they did in 1941. The menu features beef brisket, pulled pork, St. Louis style ribs, polish sausage, spicy cheddar sausage, smoked turkey, and marinated chicken, with an extensive array of homestyle sides from jalapeño beans to macaroni and cheese. Buttery rolls are served with every meal along with complementary ice cream. And just like always, kids eat free on Sunday.

“Beyond the Cupola” allows invited customers, community, and team members of Oconee State Bank to have an opportunity to share their stories of success and inspiration, and/or how the Remarkable culture of Oconee State Bank has inspired them to mark lives in their own right.

Dr. Bruce Carter/Transforming Smiles

Dr. Bruce E. Carter of Transforming Smiles has been practicing dentistry since 1985 and has extensive experience and training. He’s developed a reputation as a cosmetic and restorative dentist who gives every patient one-on-one attention and thorough caring dental treatment.

Dr. Carter graduated from the University Of Florida College Of Dentistry and completed the Cosmetic Dentistry Continuum Level II at the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry. He is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, where he has accumulated over 1000 hours of continuing education and passed the fellowship examination. Dr. Carter has also taken numerous courses on advanced dental restorative procedures, implant dentistry, and cosmetic dentistry, as well as hands-on courses concerning removable partial dentures and full dentures (including implant retained dentures).

Dr. Carter has also finished level six of the Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education and is an alumnus of the institute. The Pankey Institute has given him an in-depth knowledge of the restoration of complex dental problems. Dr. Carter is currently studying at the Kois Center in Seattle, WA where he is furthering his education in complex treatment planning and gingival plastic surgery.

Tina Herington/Suwanee Family Dentistry

Dr. Tina Herington of Suwanee Family Dentistry is a Georgia native who received her Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1996. She obtained her Doctor of Dental Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry in 2001 and started Suwanee Family Dentistry that same year. Since dental research is constantly evolving, Dr. Herington averages more than five times the minimum number of continuing education courses each year.

Dr. Herington became a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry in July 2008, and a Master in the Academy in June 2014. The Mastership program required 5 years to complete and required peer-reviewed case presentations in all areas of dentistry. Fewer than 1% of dentists ever achieve Mastership in the AGD.

Dr. Herington also has a Commercial Pilot Certificate, Flight Instructor Certificate, and has been a part-time flight instructor since 1996. She is also a member of the Leadership Gwinnett Class of 2007-08, and participates in the Brighter Smiles for Brighter Futures Campaign to raise money to support the fight against breast cancer.
