Debi Buckland and Dave Ragland talk reinventing yourself.

Reinventing Yourself

On this week’s episode we continued our monthly series with IRC Wealth.  CEO, Dave Ragland, and VP Business Development, Joe Schum, joined me in studio along with Debi Buckland, a certified therapist and professional coach.  Our topic was reinventing yourself.

Many of us adults know the feeling of, “I need to make a change,” when it comes to thinking about one’s job.  It’s hard to truly know what your true self is/wants when you’re graduating from high school and selecting an academic and professional path.  That means that for a lot of us, we find ourselves wanting to transition to something else that will be more in line with our spirit and personal values.

With his background as a financial planner and wealth adviser, David talked about how important it is for individuals to consider their personal values and wants relating to their quality of life and standard of living when thinking about making changes that will affect their income.  Clearly, leaving one’s job to pursue a dream, whether that’s a new career move or retirement will involve a measure of financial risk.

By sitting down with experts such as David when in the planning phase, risk can be mitigated by understanding obligations, getting a plan for debt elimination, potentially making changes in standard of living expenses, and developing a time line that will facilitate addressing these issues as well as allowing the individual to enjoy their new pursuits.

As a therapist who spends much time speaking with individuals who are wanting to make a change in their lives, she talked about how important it is to be moving toward something more than running away from something.  We also discussed how important it is to talk to one’s partner about the changes they’re contemplating since they will also affect their life as well.

As we talked through the show, it was clear that all our experts agree–it can be a great thing for us to find The Thing that allows us to be more authentic, more who we really are.  And it was also obvious that sitting down with an expert to craft a plan isn’t simply going to end in being told, “No, you shouldn’t do that.”  With some diligence and some planning with qualified pros, you might find you can make that transition to the new you sooner (and more safely) than you think.

Three out of every four American workers describe their work as stressful. Workplace stress costs U.S. employers an estimated $200 billion per year in absenteeism, lower productivity, staff turnover, workers’ compensation, medical insurance and other stress-related expenses. Considering this, stress management may be business’s most important challenge of the 21st century.

On this episode of “On the Money“, host Joe Moss of Embassy National Bank interviews licensed professional counselor Laila Muhanna bout stress management and stress in the workplace.

Laila Muhanna/Laila Muhanna Counseling Services

Laila Muhanna, Laila Muhanna Counseling ServicesLaila Muhanna is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner. She recently moved back to Gainesville to start her practice Laila Muhanna Counseling Services after working at Grady/Emory for the last five years.

It takes a brave person to admit that he or she needs help. Regardless of the issue, it is important to find a therapist who understands this and works with you to address the problems that brought you to therapy in the first place. Laila utilizes evidenced-based treatment while also focusing on the therapeutic relationship with her clients to help them work through their problems and succeed.

An experienced LPC with specialized education and training in the treatment of complex psychiatric cases and severe mental illness, Laila has a Master’s degree in Clinical/Counseling Psychology and specialization in severe mental illness from Brenau University. She trained with Emory University’s School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Grady Health System.

Originally from Boston, Tania Becker spent a good bit of her childhood in Paris.  She moved to Manhattan at the age of ten.  Until 1987 she was a real estate agent in Manhattan.  In 1987 Tania married Kip Becker, and moved to Atlanta.  About seven years ago, her husband, in his early 50s at the time, died suddenly of a blood clot during knee surgery.  Faced with a gaping hole in her life, Tania needed something different to do.  While reading the New York Times one day (once a New Yorker, always a New Yorker…)she came across an article describing a program of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) for Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers.  Intrigued, Tania did more research, and decided to match her love for art and her formal art training with a mission to serve those dealing with the harsh realities of Alzheimer’s.  Tania is the Founder and Director of Arts4Alzheimers, a non-profit initiative to help bring meaning and happiness to early stage Alzheimer’s patients that stay in their own homes.  One of the primary outlets for her mission is a weekly class at the Spruill Center for the Arts in Dunwoody.  To find out more, visit www.arts4alzheimers.com, email Tania directly at Tania@arts4alzheimers.com, or call her at 404-492-6181.
