Chris-LaFollette-HeadshotChris LaFollette is the President/CEO of Arizona Industries for the Blind in Phoenix, Arizona. He currently has over twenty-one years working with National Industries for the Blind and a total of 25 years working with Department of Defense.

Chris worked with a NISH (National Industries for the Severely Handicap) organization for many years before he created a company that worked with National Industries for the blind and SourceAmerica organizations to better source commercial products for the federal government.

Chris is a graduate of Fayetteville State University and has spent most of his adult years being an advocate for the disabled and blind communities.

About Your Host

David-SteinmetzAs the manager of Community and Public Relations, David Steinmetz uses his expertise, education, and personal experiences to “change the perception of blindness.”

Diagnosed with RP, a blinding retinal disease, at the age of 19, David uses his personal story to drive change that leads to improved employment outcomes and community integration for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Mr. Steinmetz graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Economics. Additionally, Steinmetz has continued his education by graduating from the Business Management Training (BMT) program provided by Darden Graduate School of Business, University of Virginia.

In 2008, David was the national recipient of the National Industries for the Blind Milton J. Samuelson Career Achievement award. This prestigious award recognized Mr. Steinmetz for his career achievements and community service work.

David Steinmetz is a member of the Governors’ Council on Blindness & Visual Impairments, is a Board Member at the Arizona Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired (ACBVI) and serves his community through the Chandler Lions Club.

Ava Leigh Stewart, Filmmaker, Artist & Author

Ava Leigh Stewart is a prolific author whose work extends from fiction to non-fiction novels, as well as illustrated poetry books. Stewart is also a screenwriter and contributor to many publications. She works in the entertainment industry creating content for film and television.

Stewart has written, produced, and directed feature and short films, television shows, commercials, and music videos. Stewart launched her film career after earning a film degree in London, England. She garnished attention after directing, producing, and writing an award winning short film entitled, Keepers of the Gate. In 2011, she completed a feature narrative film debut entitled, South of Southern. In 2015, she finished Paradise Garden, which is a feature documentary about historic preservation. She has created two original television shows, Sisters of Suburbia and OOPARTS. She continues to work on a myriad of production projects.

She began her career climbing the ranks of news production in the department of production and graphic design for CNN Television. She was nominated by her superiors to spearhead the team that implemented digital asset management across all divisions of CNN and Turner Broadcasting. She took a position at CNN Digital Networks and was instrumental in CNN’s coverage of September 11th, The War in Afghanistan, and The War in Iraq.

Her poetry books include, Intus, Beyond Fear, Revealed, Fledgling Darlings, Symphony of Chaos, and Waxing Eloquent. The poems and illustrations explore our history, mystery, and human experience. She continues to work on new innovative writing projects.

She is also an artist and her work has been exhibited worldwide. She was chosen as a finalist in the 2009 Red Bull Art of Can competition for her sculpture Alternative Energy displayed at the Union Station museum in Washington D.C. Her photography was featured in the documentary, “A million little pieces,” that debuted in San Francisco in 2009. She was featured in an exhibition at the Emily Harvey Foundation and The Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York for her graphic design entitled “Memoirs of Oblivion.” In 2014 and 2015, she was selected as a finalist for the International Women in Focus photography competition.

She recently released “Finster,” a film about Howard Finster, the grandfather of the Southern Folk Art movement.

When she’s not matching Atlanta’s top creative talent with its leading creative and marketing employers, Nancy is a NPCC volunteer and chairs the AIESEC Life National Mentorship Program. Intro: [00:00:04] Broadcasting live from the Business RadioX studios in Atlanta, Georgia, it’s time for GWBC Radio’s Open for Business. Now, here’s your host.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:18] Lee Kantor here. Another episode of the GWBC Open for Business. And this will be a fun one. I have with me today Nancy Gamble. And she’s with a company called Hire Profile. Welcome, Nancy.

Nancy Gamble: [00:00:31] Thank you for having me.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:34] Well, before we get too far into things, tell us about Hire Profile. How do you serve your clients?

Nancy Gamble: [00:00:41] Hire Profile is a staffing and recruiting agency. And we specialize in the marketing, advertising, graphic design and public relations fields. We help our clients who are either corporate marketing departments, design studios, ad agencies, production companies find freelancers to help them in a pinch, cover long-term contracting needs, and also permanent searches for their employee.

Lee Kantor: [00:01:07] And how did you get into this line of work?

Nancy Gamble: [00:01:10] Well, interesting story, I am a Southern California native. I was living and working in Los Angeles in the advertising industry at BBDO and some other agencies out there, and Saatchi & Saatchi, Team One, and decided after a visit to Atlanta that that was home, and I just missed my calling somehow and had to get out here. So, I moved out here, and I was recruited by a company to start their kind of high-end creative division of their existing company to recruit and serve the advertising industry. So, my past experience made me a good fit, and they taught me recruiting, and I have never looked back. I decided to start my own firm in 2003 and have been at it ever since.

Lee Kantor: [00:01:59] Now, how does somebody get on your radar? How do you find the talent you need for the companies you serve?

Nancy Gamble: [00:02:09] Great question. Multipronged approach, of course. There’s no one source that covers everything that we would look for in a week, a month or a year. But number one is referrals. We take our referrals very seriously if we have either a client or existing candidate, someone we know through business colleagues that says, “You need to talk to this person,” I can guarantee you that we will talk to them.

Nancy Gamble: [00:02:34] Then, the next would be, obviously, we have collected over a very deep pool of existing freelancers who, sometimes, we call permalancers. They’re always kind of on the hunt for their next gig. And so, they are a very reliable resource for us. We have job seekers that are in between jobs. They might see our posting on our social media, they might connect on LinkedIn, and then we invite them to apply. And then, of course, we go out and we headhunt from companies in the right industry for what our clients are looking for and with the skills that we need. Of course, we use all the tools. Everyone knows about LinkedIn, Indeed, things like that. But I would say that our number one is those personal relationships and those custom referrals. That’s what we spend most of our time generating.

Lee Kantor: [00:03:25] And then, what are the trends you’re seeing during this pandemic? Are people hiring now? Are people like on pause? What is kind of the state of the industry as you see it? Because I would imagine you’re kind of-

Nancy Gamble: [00:03:35] Oh, that-

Lee Kantor: [00:03:35] You’re getting the first look, right? You’re that the headlights on this thing.

Nancy Gamble: [00:03:40] Yeah. We, oftentimes, are. This is my second big disaster. If you count 9/11, I guess it’s the third. But obviously, the economic recession, the financial one is acting in a very similar way in that the first people to often be cut are the existing contractors. They boil things down to their core W2 staff. However, then, they realized that work still needs to go on, and they start slowly adding back contractors. That, usually, is the first line of defense in that they don’t really want to jump in with full-time W2 employees when they’re unsure and uncertain of their own future. So, they may say, “Well, let’s start with a part-time contract. We’ll get a consultant on this project.”

Nancy Gamble: [00:04:30] So, if somebody is looking for work at this time, you need to really be versed on how you want to market yourself as a consultant, or contractor, or the gig economy, be part of that. Know what you’re worth. Know what they’re going rates are. Talk to someone like myself, or a recruiter, or hiring manager to kind of get a feel for what people in your line of work are getting per hour.

Nancy Gamble: [00:04:57] So, yes, contacting will probably be the first thing that will ramp up, but I will say, companies are hiring. They had holes in their team before this started. Obviously, some industries are doing great in this economy, and some are just not as affected by downturn as they are by having to accommodate working from home and figuring all that out. But I feel like we’re past that point now. Those companies have now kind of figured this out, and they’re ready to get back to work.

Lee Kantor: [00:05:28] Now, what type of skills are you seeing that people need during this time?

Nancy Gamble: [00:05:34] Digital. Digital skills. Now, of course, we’re in a narrow market, so we are not involved in finance, and nurses, and all these other areas. But within the marketing and advertising design, a lot of communications, a lot of digital content, and digital project management. Just digital marketing, management. How to not only enhance but increase the flow and the clicks for their online presence because a lot of companies that no longer operate or have very limited access to a brick and mortar way to sell their products are really ramping up their e-commerce, and making sure their websites are up to date, and ready to receive a lot of traffic, and create those messages that may need to go out to their customers, explaining how things are going to be different now and in the future. So, communications and digital are really key areas right now.

Lee Kantor: [00:06:32] Now, in your world, do you hire a lot of … are your workers remote workers? So, they’ll kind of seamlessly fit into this during this transition, or they have to be face-to-face in an office?

Nancy Gamble: [00:06:46] That has really helped us in the fact that most of our … not most. I was a good percentage of our contractors were already at home when this hit. Those that had to transition to being at home for the first time had to work it out, and be flexible, and really show a lot of initiative and extra communication because these companies that always required workers to be onsite were learning as they were growing. So, they were learning it together and figuring it out together. And it made them, I think … actually, their bond is really close.

Nancy Gamble: [00:07:24] The companies that have fought this for many, many years – working from home – have kind of had to come to accept it. And I do believe that many are realizing that this is a very viable way to run your business and that this could be what their future looks like whole or in part as they figure out how to either scale back their commercial office space, they may decide to put their teams on rotation where there could be a blue team and a red team, and the blue team is Monday and Wednesday, and the other team is Tuesday and Thursday, and everybody’s home on Friday. They have to spread their desks. They might be putting up Plexiglas. They just may not be able to do everything the way they used to. And these freelancers, and contractors, and W2 employees are having to go with the flow and really adapt to whatever environment they’re put in.

Lee Kantor: [00:08:22] Now, in your organization, when this went down, was there a big kind of transition for you? Or it sounds like your business kind of can adapt to this situation pretty easily based on what you do and how you do it.

Nancy Gamble: [00:08:39] Well, to say we’re completely unaffected is not accurate. However, already since 2003, we have been a work-from-home business. So, as far as our work environment, our communication tools, and our way of communicating with each other with our client has not changed. So, for us, very minimal impact there. Obviously, we’ve had some business downturn. I would be lying if I said some clients haven’t had to cancel a search or, at least, put it on hold, and we have a couple contractors who were released. But for the most part, we have stayed very steady. In fact, we had some upticks in our contract work. And so, we are secure, and safe, and so happy for that.

Nancy Gamble: [00:09:23] I would say the future is still unknown. We hope that people now that Georgia, at least, is on the cutting edge of opening up, we are hopeful that business will return to normal, and we can all get back to what we love to do and find people big, and wonderful, new opportunities and jobs. We’re spending a lot of our time right now helping candidates that are furloughed and laid off to improve their resumé, to guide them, have them be prepared. We’re giving talks on being prepared for the recovery, job searching in a tough time, and things like that. So, we’re trying to reach out and help as much as we can.

Lee Kantor: [00:10:02] Now, are you seeing a shift in the marketing messaging that’s happening now in terms of companies? Maybe at one point, it was a lot of, “Hey, buy my staff.” And now, it’s more of, “Hey, we’re all going through this tough time together and we’re here to help.” Like, are you seeing a shift in the messaging?

Nancy Gamble: [00:10:19] Absolutely. And those that don’t shift are standing out like really sore thumb. So, the shift is not only a trend. It’s like people who don’t shift to, “We’re here for you. We care. We want you to be well over anything else,” those people are really going to damage their brand because they didn’t shift. So, we really encourage all businesses to not be silenced. That’s another thing that is happening in some cases. Some people don’t know what to say and feel that if they’re not selling their products, what else are they going to talk about?

Nancy Gamble: [00:11:00] So, you have to not only come up with what you want to say to your existing clients, and prospects, and any of your other stakeholders, but let them know that you are still here, that you’re going to be here when they’re ready, and that you actually care about them. And those types of messaging makes key … excuse me. Key communication people within your organization are very vital right now because that messaging is maybe all you have until business starts to boom. So, it’s a really important thing, having your crisis communication linked into your organization and be ready. We don’t know. This could all happen again, and it could be a deja vu. So, be ready with how you want to communicate to your prospects and customers.

Lee Kantor: [00:11:50] Now, talk about GWBC. How has that organization helped your business?

Nancy Gamble: [00:11:58] Oh, GWBC has always been something that we are certified with and been a very important part. It’s a great door opener for getting into large corporations to value a diversity program. And they also put a lot of learning and training out of their members. Obviously, things like this are unique to GWBC. And so, we are our proud members. And I think the fact that most people are really looking at their networks, and they’re looking at the connection and the human connection they’ve made over the years will make organizations like GWBC a vital part of your business plan going forward because you can pick up the phone, and call them, and that you sat with at several luncheon, and be able to say, “Hey, I’m struggling right now. I need to talk to a few women who own businesses. How can we get together?” And I think that that network is there for you, and you don’t realize how important it is until you don’t have it when you go through something like COVID-19.

Lee Kantor: [00:13:03] Now, Nancy, if somebody wanted to learn more and have more substantive conversation with you or somebody on your team, is there a website?

Socially Acceptable does HR-type work for small businesses, including: hiring, training, workshops, creating hiring material, and writing employee handbooks. They add some creativity to these materials to heighten engagement. They also put out books for consumers. SALogo

Their main consumer product is a book called Entrepreneurship for the Cool Kids. It’s a reference book about the self-discovery process of going your own path. The product celebrates the belief that the first stage of entrepreneurship is self-discovery and uses creativity to present intrapersonal topics in a helpful and useful tone.

The company also puts on consumer workshops that range from how to write a book to goal-setting to how to organize your life.

Socially Acceptable’s central product is a book called Entrepreneurship for the Cool Kids. It’s a reference book about the self-discovery process of going your own path. Kimberly talked about what a Tranquilista is – and why creative women of today want to embrace this philosophy.  A Tranquilista blends mind/body philosophy, creativity, and entrepreneurship to help women live a life full of extravagance grounded in mindfulness. Kimberly Wilson aims to help women realize — and revel in — their unique potential to make a difference through enlightened work and mindful play.

Kimberly explained what enlightened work looks like and feels like and how to use mindful play to make yourself more productive and more joy-filled.

Enlightened work is about forgoing spreadsheets and stodgy office politics to forge ahead with a new way of designing our lives as self-defined entrepreneurs who care about blending balance, bliss, and beauty. Kimberly uses the word entrepreneur, to  refer to today’s woman who wants to leave a legacy through her daily actions, whether working for a nonprofit, launching a vegan cafe, or being a full-time activist.

Mindful play allows the incorporation of art, creativity, style, and dreams into one’s spiritual journey. Kimberly says to think of play as the icing on top of a yummy cupcake – it makes the whole experience more enjoyable and balanced. Mindfulness allows one’s playful spirit to remained focused on the world-at-large and making a difference.

Kimberly focused an entire chapter of her book on style – so you know I was all over that.  We discussed how style ties into work and play.

Looking good and feeling good often goes hand in hand. “When I don a flattering outfit with a dash of the perfect of accessories and hint of make-up plus dab of eau de parfum, I hold my head high and put my best self forward.”  Here here sister!

In addition to fashion, Kimberly’s book also addresses decluttering, communicating clearly, home décor, beauty rest, bathing rituals, nourishment, exercise, and entertaining. Style plays into how you present yourself to the world in fashion, communication, home and office environment, and more. It’s a defining aspect of who you are and how you express your creativity.

Kimberly explained how she finds balance while wearing so many different hats

She says she no longer sees a distinction between my work and play. During down time you’ll find her reading business books, practicing yoga, or thumbing through fashion magazines – all of which are applicable to her career and professional life and fuel her passion. During work she’ll be sipping tea, engaging in social media, and blogging about her latest adventure. Her work and play commingle in a coherent, holistic way. She admits she’s also a sucker for self-care: regular massage, oodles of sleep, yoga, and journal writing.  – What a different world it would be if businesswomen had more pride in self care and a little less in being a workaholic or a Type A personality  – I talked about this very thing at a Panta Rei meeting recently.

Lastly Kimberly and I got into the reasons why she emphasizes spirituality and do-gooding as lifestyle essentials.

Kimberly holds that spirituality and do-gooding are foundational building blocks to launching a career and life mindfully. By taking time to feed your spiritual self through simple acts such as time in nature, meditation, journal writing, and yoga, you’re able to know yourself better and find your center. Similarly, by giving back to others and striving to let your thoughts, words, and actions have a powerful impact on those around you, you are able to make better decisions, be a leader, and, ultimately, leave a legacy.

Next up on the Chic Perspectives Show was Shama Kabani.  Shama is President of The Marketing Zen Group, a full service online marketing firm that serves clients around the world. She has been dubbed a “millennial master of the universe” and “online marketing shaman” by Fast Company magazine. In 2009, Business Week honored her as one of the Top 25 Entrepreneurs Under 25 in North America.

Shama holds a masters degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and prides herself on being a constant learner. Her website, http://www.MarketingZen.com, has turned into a high-traffic destination for people looking for advice on how to successfully market businesses online. Companies around the world have hired Shama and her fast-growing digital media agency to guide them through the world of social media marketing. She also hosts a popular web TV show on new media marketing at http://Shama.TV, and is regularly quoted on marketing and technology trends by broadcast, print, and online media.

Shama shared some valuable perspective on social media strategy and how businesses can leverage the tools to build customer relationships.

Shama says to remember that social media marketing comes LAST – after you have a great website, a solid product strategy, and a clear product direction.  Nobody “starts tweeting today” and makes a million.

It was interesting to here her talk about how traditional marketing tools are almost certain to fail in the world of social media – because social media is a consumer-driven environment, not a marketing platform.

Even if you don’t have a social media plan – Shama says social media is already influencing your customers.  It’s the great equalizer, that amplifies every opinion (positive or negative), where a college student in Austin can have as much impact as a magazine reviewer in New York City, depending on their network and their relevance to your target market.

A good rule of thumb – remember your mother’s advice:  treat people with respect, and don’t try to hide who you are.  (There are multiple case studies, and admonitions in the book, about this because one of the most common mistakes newcomers to social media make is to forget basic etiquette, or try to hide their identity to create “false positive” reviews or comments.  Two short examples:  you’d never run up to a stranger at a trade show, shove your business card in their hand, and then run away without saying anything – but people will sometimes do just that by posting their contact info or a product pitch on someone’s blog, Facebook page, or Twitter DM, without realizing that it’s the exact same thing.  Businesses that enter social media through the back door after a negative review on a site like Yelp, often try to “Googlewash” the negative reviews with positive reviews they write themselves under false names.  That ISN’T the way to handle negative consumer postings.)

Shama shared that for most businesses, it isn’t a question of whether or not they are going to make social media a part of their marketing efforts at some point.  It’s a question of when they are going to enter the conversation, and take charge of their online reputation and brand.  So what we do for our clients is show them how to get into the game, and use the Zen-like secret of success:  go with the flow, instead of trying to swim upstream.  By that, we mean using social media as a way to communicate with, educate, entertain, and open a dialog with people who may become customers (now, someday, or never) – instead of always trying to sell.  Yes, we do make money for our clients and our own business through social media marketing – and we do get customers that way.  But it is often an indirect process – someone who reads my blog, or follows me on twitter gives my name to their cousin who is looking for a web design firm, or they put our name into consideration when their company is looking for an agency, or whatever.  It’s not always a direct sales process – but is can be very profitable.
