Why Attainable Housing Feels Impossible in North Fulton, and What Can Actually Change, with Mark Murphy, City of Mountain Park and the Fuller Center for Housing of Greater Atlanta (North Fulton Voices, Episode 17)

Housing affordability is no longer a “someday” problem in Metro Atlanta. It is here, and it is changing who can live near where they work in North Fulton. In this episode of North Fulton Voices, Jack Murphy and Nancy Diamond from the North Fulton Improvement Network (NFIN) discuss with Mark Murphy the reasons behind the seeming impossibility of affordable housing and the practical solutions that can significantly improve the situation.

Mark serves on the Mountain Park City Council and leads the Fuller Center for Housing of Greater Atlanta. He makes the issue concrete: the local rules and approvals that quietly decide what gets built, why zoning matters more than most people want to admit, and why small, sensible moves like ADUs (accessory dwelling units) and cottage homes are part of the answer.

If you are concerned about enabling teachers, first responders, and working families to remain in the communities they serve, this episode will provide you with the essential language and perspective to actively participate in the next zoning discussion in your city.

North Fulton Voices is presented by the North Fulton Improvement Network. The show series is proudly sponsored by John Ray Co. and North Fulton Business Radio, LLC.

Key Takeaways from This Episode

  • Housing affordability is now the region’s top concern, ahead of traffic, and it is hitting hardest for those building families and careers.
  • The affordability gap is structural, not a matter of personal effort. The numbers have shifted under everyone.
  • Zoning and local approvals are not background noise. They often decide what gets built and what never gets a chance.
  • “Gentle density” is a practical path, including ADUs and cottage homes that add options without flipping neighborhood character.
  • When attainable housing disappears, the people who keep a community running get pushed out: teachers, school staff, caregivers, and first responders.

LGE Community Credit Union: Linda Coyle, Lori Kee, and Jason Perez (North Fulton Business Radio, Episode 395)

State-of-the-art branches and superior customer service are two of the ways LGE Community Credit Union sets itself apart. Linda Coyle, Business Development Manager, Lori Kee, Manager of the Roswell Branch, and Jason Perez, Manager of the Alpharetta branch, were in the studio with host John Ray to discuss the unique benefits of banking with LGE, the services they offer, and much more. North Fulton Business Radio is broadcast from the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

LGE Community Credit Union

In 1951, seven Lockheed Georgia employees dreamed of a better way to bank and LGE Community Credit Union was born.

Today they serve communities in Northwest Georgia as a not-for-profit financial institution. Unlike a bank, whose profits go to its shareholders, its profits go to its members in the form of better rates and lower fees. They are guided by a strong commitment to providing a better financial future for their members.

Everyone who lives or works in Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, Fulton, and Paulding counties is eligible to apply for membership, as are employees of many companies. Family members of existing members are also eligible.

They are a not-for-profit, member-owned financial institution with a strong commitment to the local community.  LGE is governed by a volunteer board of directors who are also members of the credit union.

Scott Farber grew up wanting to be a professional baseball player in Chicago. After knee surgeries ended that dream, he went into broadcasting baseball games for both radio and television. After moving to Dallas 30 years ago, Scott went into advertising where he founded SF Media Consultants, and has worked closely with the record labels, the medical industry and professional sports franchises.

Recently, Scott had the opportunity to work on a World War II documentary which led him to launch www.generationslestweforget.com.  This website hosts recorded stories from our seniors to preserve them for future generations. Scott works closely with senior communities around the Dallas area to film 15-20 minute ‘mini documentaries’ of their residents (at no cost to them), and he is always looking for more stories to record. If you are interested in having your, or your loved ones’ stories captured, you can call 972-625-5419 x106 or email scott@sfmediainc.com.

A Denver native, Jeff Smythe discovered early on that he wanted to spend his life and career helping people.  While in college, he spent time with WorldTeach in Central America.  Upon return and graduation from college, Jeff moved to Atlanta for our glorious Spring and Autumn weather.  He started working with OpenHand Atlanta, and went on to earn a Masters in Public Administration from Georgia State University.

Approximately ten years ago, he accepted a position with Senior Citizen Services.  As the Executive Director of the organization, Jeff takes pride in the fact that the organization serves more than 100,000 meals per year through its Meals on Wheels program, and provides home repair for literally hundreds of Fulton County citizens each year.  In addition, Senior Citizen Services offers one of the only Adult Day Health programs for mid-stage Alzheimer’s patients and operates seven neighborhood senior centers.  Senior Citizen Services counts on YOUR assistance to continue to serve Atlanta’s elderly population.  To find out how you can help, please visit their website at www.MealsOnWheelsAtlanta.org, or call them at 404-351-3889.

We want to thank Griswold Special Care for sponsoring today’s show.  Griswold Special Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Dallas and Atlanta for 20 years.
