Shawn Lally, BizPayPros, on Avoiding Payment Processing Scams and Improving Business Cash Flow (North Fulton Business Radio, Episode 928)

On this episode of North Fulton Business Radio, host John Ray welcomes Shawn Lally, Founder and CEO of BizPayPros. Shawn brings over 21 years of experience in the payment processing industry, helping businesses learn about the complicated world of merchant services, lending solutions, and spend management.

Shawn shares how nefarious practices like exploitative equipment leasing and hidden rate increases plague the payment processing industry. He explains why business owners often pay thousands of dollars for terminals worth only a few hundred and how processors use fine print to raise rates without warning. Shawn discusses the risks of auto-approval processors like Stripe, the importance of choosing software that offers payment processing flexibility, and why local, independent service matters. He also covers BizPayPros’ cash flow and working capital solutions for businesses struggling with accounts receivable and introduces spend management tools that can save hours of daily reconciliation work.

John Ray is the host of North Fulton Business Radio. The show is produced by John Ray and North Fulton Business Radio, LLC, an affiliate of Business RadioX®, and is recorded inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Key Takeaways from This Episode

  • Equipment leasing scams can cost business owners over $10,000 for terminals that should cost a few hundred dollars, with automatic charges continuing indefinitely after the lease term ends.
  • Payment processors often bury clauses in contracts allowing them to raise rates at any time, making decisions in boardrooms based on algorithms that calculate acceptable customer loss versus revenue gains.
  • Processors that auto-approve accounts without proper underwriting may place holds on funds or shut down businesses unexpectedly when risk profiles don’t align with their portfolio requirements.
  • Payment processing integration with practice management software saved one medical office 2-3 hours daily in reconciliation work, demonstrating that choosing the right processor goes far beyond just saving money on transaction fees.

Rachel Donnelly, Black Dress Consultants and Derek Chard, Payroc/TWC Atlanta Inc. (Family Business Radio, Episode 40)

On this episode of Family Business Radio, host Anthony Chen welcomed two esteemed business owners to the studio. Rachel Donnelly discussed her personal history with loss and what motivated her to create Black Dress Consultants, the services they provide, and much more. Derek Chard talked about the biggest concerns local business owners face in today’s economy, the biggest misconceptions of the merchant services industry, advances in technology and how that changes business, and much more. Anthony closed the show with a commentary on how financial planning can be overwhelming. He suggests starting somewhere small and keeping it simple.

Family Business Radio is underwritten and brought to you by Anthony Chen with Lighthouse Financial Network.

Black Dress Consultants

Black Dress Consultants handle the business of death so you don’t have to. By coordinating with attorneys, financial advisors, accountants, etc., they offload the administrative tasks that come with legacy planning and after loss, so you can focus less on the logistics and more on creating space to live worry-free and grieve peacefully.

Rachel Donnelly, Owner / CEO, Black Dress Consultants

Rachel Donnelly, Owner / CEO, Black Dress Consultants

Some days Rachel Donnelly feels like a real-life Little Orphan Annie whose life should be subtitled “Death Becomes Her.” (She’s joking! Sort of.)

Growing up, Rachel used to accompany her father on his house calls and hospital rounds, which gave me a deep understanding of compassion and leaning into hard spaces. When she was 16, my father passed away at the age of 48. A few years later, she moved my grandmother to an assisted living home where she passed shortly after. Several years later, her mother was diagnosed with cancer and passed away shortly thereafter. Her passing left Rachel with five houses to clean out and sell, as well as her role as caregiver for her uncle.

After Rachel’s uncle passed away, she assumed the role of Co-Executrix of his estate. Needless to say… she’s dealt with a lot of death. And in these instances — especially the two where she was Executor — there were so many decisions to make and tasks to complete. And she was doing it all while trying to work full time, raise two small kids, run a house and stay married (because let’s be honest… life never stops, not even for death).

Rachel vividly remembers standing in the parking lot of the bank after spending hours trying to (unsuccessfully) open an estate banking account and thinking to herself, “Why isn’t there someone who can help project manage this dumpster fire?!” Which is how Black Dress Consultants came to be.

She created this business because this is the service she wishes she had available to her then. Many times over, Rachel has been where you are right now. She understands how overwhelming and emotionally taxing it can be. But you don’t have to do this alone.

The Black Dress Consultants are here to help you manage the expected and unexpected of end-of-life. Whether you’re looking for someone to help legacy plan, or you’re dealing with the loss of a loved one and don’t know where to start, they have ample experience in taking tasks off your plate so you can free up space to breathe.

Humor Wins

Humor Wins

This week I sat down with Marshall Chiles, Founder and Dudeman of Humor Wins, a business that helps companies looking to improve team dynamics among their staff.  As the owner of one of the first comedy clubs in Atlanta, Laughing Skull Lounge, he has been in the humor business for years.  He decided to take his knowledge of comedy to help business people learn to add an element of humor to their client interactions and sales presentations.  Humor Wins’ team also provides corporate roast services, adding a memorable, interesting element to company events.

Marshall talked about how they take their clients through the process of learning how to develop some humorous comments or jokes that help disarm prospective customers, facilitating relationship building that can lead to a sale.  His team also facilitates team building by teaching self-deprecating humor that can foster better communication and reduce tension among the business’s staff.

He brought along Jeremy Wing, Co-CEO of Payscape Advisors, a merchant services and financial technology company.  Payscape Advisors provides an array of services and technologies for companies ranging from online invoicing, an online registration platform for schools and camps, access to AR capital, payment processing, and more.  Jeremy shared how he came to know Marshall through providing their payment processing services, ultimately becoming a client of Humor Wins.

I met Kimyung Kim, a comedian and word smith who uses improvisational free-style rapping to provide entertainment services for corporate events.  We got a demonstration of his skill with him rapping while we gave him random words he integrated into his lyrics.

If your company is looking to attract young, motivated millennials, reduce turnover, and help build closer relationships among your sales force, executives, and administrative staff, you need to get to know these innovative experts.

Payscape Advisors

Payscape Advisors

According to the Atlanta Metro Chamber, “Georgia is 3rd in the nation, just behind New York and California in FinTech revenue. Georgia FinTech companies have produced more than $83 billion of shareholder value since 1995 and revenues are more than $34 billion annually.  Wages in Atlanta’s financial and IT industry are lower than competitive markets. Here, there is a convergence of three key sectors: finance, IT, and software, all of which have a strong presence in Atlanta, along with an abundant IT, software and financial labor force.”

Today I got to sit down with 3 of the folks on the team from Payscape Advisors, an Atlanta company through and through that is an important player in those amazing statistics.  I was joined by Rachel Lawrence, Technology Integration Specialists, Hunter Hudson, Director of Business Development, and Zach Wing, Product Manager.  Hunter Hudson has been with Payscape Advisors for a number of years and he shared the story of how Payscape Advisors was started and launched by two Atlanta residents, Jeremy Wing and Adam Bloomston.  They have since grown the company to include offices in 13 cities nationwide that also has clients and partners around the globe.  The company initially focused on payment processing but saw opportunities to expand their suite of services to include point-of-sale processing, access to working capital, SaaS services including Reg Point and Billing Orchard, international payment processing, web development for eCommerce sites (including compliant payment features) and more.  The company has striven to provide the gamut of services to merchants

As Hunter described why they’re different than many of the other merchant services companies out there, “We do have those feet on the street.  We have a team.  We have somebody you can call.  You’re gonna call their cellphone and you’ll have their email address.  We’re not just a 1-800 number.   You’re gonna have someone who’s going to be there for you.”  He went on to talk about the different service options they provide and how they collaborate with SaaS developers to provide the payment interface for their applications, enabling them to provide a more desirable, robust product to their users.

We talked about the innovative user registration software they make available to groups such as camps and other large events that provides a secure way for attendees to sign up and enter sensitive information and provide payment.  The company also offers several avenues for companies to access working capital when bank loans are not readily available.

As I sat with these 3 experts it was clear that they all share a passion for what they’re doing and take pride in engaging their clients and partners with a personable, professional approach with the goal of forging long-term, mutually-beneficial relationships.

Elavon
Megan Heinze talks about Elavon’s services for small businesses.

Today I sat down with Megan Heinze of Elavon merchant services, one of the world’s largest provider of merchant payment processing services.  The company was founded in Atlanta in 1991 as NOVA Information Systems, with a focus of providing services supporting small- to mid-sized companies.  The company combined forces with USBank, who brought a compliment of large client companies from around the globe.  Elavon continues to innovate payment processing services, providing a range of technologies, access to key business data, and customer loyalty options that help companies operate and grow more efficiently.

Megan talked about Elavon’s platform called, “Talech”, which gives the small- and mid-sized company owner the ability to use a variety of devices, including tablets and smart devices, to take orders, process payment, manage inventory, assess sales histories for their products/services, and more—all at their fingertips.  This platform gives the small- to mid-sized business owner the ability to more efficiently “wear the many hats” that small company executives often have to wear to operate their business.  Additionally, Elavon provides the business owner with the ability to offer “cardless” customer loyalty programs that are highly customizable.  Customers are able to be recognized by either their credit card or phone number, eliminating the need for a punch card or cumbersome rewards card they have to carry to be able to accrue/redeem the rewards they qualify for.

For companies in the hospitality and food/beverage spaces Elavon has partnered with Micros, the maker of point-of-sale platforms to enhance the level of security from end to end.  This collaboration will help reduce risk for both the merchant and their customers.
