workforce management
Brian Mehaary, of NOVAtime Technologies

NOVAtime Technologies

On this episode of Midtown Business Radio, I sat down with Vice President of Business Development for NOVAtime Technologies, Inc., Brian Meharry.  NOVAtime is a Workforce Management Software Company that specializes in providing employers of all sizes access to tools that will enable them to track, monitor, report, and schedule their employee’s time.  These tools are contemporary and adhere to all compliance needs.

Brian explained how time keeping has evolved to be an important component in a cloud of data points from an employee’s work-related activities for an enterprise.  In the old days, an employee walked in, punched a clock or physically signed Time In and Time Out.

Today, signing in and signing out triggers regulated elements such as health benefits, time off accrual, tax requirements, and a host of other business, industry, and/or union rules that come into play that must be accurately tracked and reported upon.

The technology NOVAtime provides meets workforce management demands for a wide range of business sectors from government, to healthcare, manufacturing, oil & gas, and numerous others.  The company is privately-owned and has enjoyed rapid growth over the past few years, due to the consultative approach the company takes (called Sure Path) when bringing a new client on board.  NOVAtime is serving over 16,000 businesses of all sizes and over 1,000,000 employees.

In this way the company is able to identify all relevant workforce-related concerns and geographic issues to be addressed for a disperssed workforce and determine the needed software functions, hardware needs, and relevant apps to achieve the greatest compliance, efficiencies, and strategic decision-making.

Brooke Beach, Bill Plunk, Diedre Plunk

Kevy and CimCo

This week we continued our series with Life University and Dr. Gilles LaMarche, VP of Professional Relations, focusing on business leaders of integrity.  We hosted Brooke Beach, of Kevy, and Bill and Diedre Plunk, of CimCo.

After spending several years as a marketing expert, Brooke and some colleagues believe they could improve on the ecommerce/direct marketing customer experience and improve response rates and create more repeat customers.  To date, most email automation solutions such as Pardot, SalesForce, and others, focused on the B2B sector, helping businesses increase contact and ultimately, sales, with companies they’re trying to reach.  There are marketing automation solutions available for B2C/Retail enterprises to similarly leverage email to contact customers to enhance sales, these solutions have traditionally offered limited data that would let that enterprise truly evaluate ROI on a per email basis in dollars and cents.

The Kevy platform integrates with their clients’ existing ecommerce platform via java script that is embedded into the website code.  Once there, it enables Kevy and the customer to track user behavior by where they go on the site, how long they stay, the products and types of products they’re viewing, and whether they buy.  With this information, the retailer is able to display very behaviorally-relevant pop-up information that personalizes the experience and significantly increases conversion rates.

Additionally, the Kevy platform enables very user-specific automated email communications that are relevant to that user’s particular behavioral context.  Combining these technologies results in a dramatic rise in sales from existing customers in the retailer’s database and the ability to get very targeted with discounts and marketing message.  If you are interested in learning more, contact Brooke and her team here.

Upon entering the banking industry ~20 years ago, Bill unexpectedly found himself placed in charge of collections on loans in arrears.  Without any experience or real training in how to do so, he set about contacting debtors.  It turned out that his approach to this often-difficult conversation made him quite successful at it.

After spending some time with a collections firm that was not operating in an ethical fashion, he decided to launch his own firm and handle clients and debtors with the respect and professionalism that had served him so well to that point.

In that time, his integrity and professionalism made such an impression on debtors he was collecting on, some ultimately turned to him to collect for them after their accounts were settled.  His highly-personal approach to his work allows him to turn around outstanding accounts quickly, in many cases in less than 1-2 months.

Solution Road and Mosaic

This week marked the beginning of a bi-weekly series we’ll be hosting with Dr. Gilles LaMarche, VP of Professional Relations at Life University where we’ll be focusing on integrity in the business community and personal life.  This series will be leading into the Life Talks World Congress event coming up May 12-13, 2016.

Life Talks is about empowering leaders to create social change, make a transformational impact on the world and remove the interference to maximize their perfection within.  The event includes thought leadersin business and productivity, physical health, nutrition, compassion, forgiveness, vitalism, quantum healing, and more.

We will be featuring business leaders who are known to value integrity in their professional and personal lives, and we will introduce several high school students from the community who have also been recognized for exemplifying the trait in their personal and academic endeavors.

We were joined in studio by Sarah Smith and Stu Sheldon, of Solution Road and Mosaic, respectively.  Sarah has spent numerous years helping non-profit and for-profit organizations raise funding and public awareness for their respective work.  She draws on experience from healthcare as well as media and is very selective in the clients she and her team take on at Solution Road.

Stu is an expert in experiential marketing, in which brands look to engage a targeted subset of their customer base.  Their goal is to create an immersive experience that has a measure of exclusivity and hands-on interaction with elements of the brand.  In this way, the client company is able to leverage Earned Media to get people talking about their experience.  I first met Stu on the Midtown Business show talking about Escalate, the experiential marketing company that was recently acquired by Mosaic.

Experiential Marketing

This week I sat down with experiential marketing expert, Stu Sheldon of Escalate.  Stu spent several years building brands for Coca Cola, including Mello Yello.  Like that refrigerator pack your 12 pack comes in?  Coca Cola introduced that idea and tested it with the Mello Yello brand with impressive success.  Stu shared some excellent information about the difference between paid advertising campaigns and experiential marketing.

In an economy where every dollar counts, companies that are seeking to increase frequency a customer purchases their product or service as well as adding new customers can often gain greater results through an experiential marketing approach.  Stu talked about the fact that even in situations where a company has an advertising agency that has produced creative material, Escalate can collaborate with company and agency to build on what has been created to “Make it come to life”.

Stu explained that while even a small company can benefit from experiential marketing, they typically work with mid-sized to large companies seeking to expand brand awareness.  They have an impressive list of success stories from Coca Cola to non-profit organizations.  Check out this great episode–I think you’ll find it both informative and interesting!

Escalate

Escalate

This week I sat down with Chief Advocacy Officer, Stuart Sheldon, of Escalate.  He talked about how Escalate delivers measurable value to their clients through two core Marketing competencies:

1. Experiential – Engage consumers/customers directly, through all five senses + emotion

2. Word-of-Mouth (including Social Media) – Who says what about you, and how can you get involved in the conversation?

as we engage people with meaningful, authentic brand experiences that begin and sustain brand love, amongst your raving fans…and beyond.

Why is it crucial? Because successful brands clearly can’t build brand loyalty (or a sustainable business) with just traditional marketing & media strategies and tactics when:

• An average consumer sees 3,000+ marketing messages a day

• 76% of consumers don’t believe companies tell the truth in ads

• 78% of consumers claim to trust information from other consumers more than any advertising source

• 19% of purchase decisions made only on personal recommendation, 86% at least partially

• Experiential + Word Of Mouth marketing efforts can deliver purchase intent as high as +60% vs. traditional efforts

While many of the firm’s clients are medium to large companies they also have success stories about small businesses they have helped to improve the way they engage their prospective customers, leading to growing sales.

Nine Labs, Polygon, Casey Gilson, Nelson Mullins, and SoundRiver Advisors

This week we heard from experts in corporate law (workers compensation and mergers & acquisitions), web design and customer experience, and corporate executive compensation and financial planning.  I hosted folks from Nine Labs, Polygon, Casey Gilson, Nelson Mullins, and SoundRiver Advisors.

J. Cornelius is the President of Nine Labs, a web design and customer experience company based in Atlanta.  He also started Polygon, an event space designed and dedicated to support Atlanta’s growing technology industry.  Nine Labs is a user experience consultancy that helps businesses improve the look and feel of their digital technologies, making sure that a customer’s experience is useful, intuitive, and branding is maintained across the variety of digital media, mobile devices, and other user interfaces.  The company will provide message content or work with their client’s internal team to optimize the way the client presents their brand to the public.  Nine Labs is able to help businesses that are putting effort into making sure their customers can have a consistent experience across all digital/mobile platforms.  They often encounter situations where a user’s experience on a mobile device is very different in terms of look and feel of a company’s branding, along with less-than-optimal navigation or functionality.  Nine Labs’ experts are able to bring a consistent, positive experience to a company’s web visitors, regardless of technology used to access it.  Polygon is an event space located in popular Atlantic Station in Midtown Atlanta that was created to provide  technology companies and associations with a place to have productive networking, planning, and educational events.  The space is located, laid out, and equipped with the Atlanta technology industry in mind.

Rayford Taylor is an attorney with the firm, Casey Gilson PC, admitted to practice law in Florida and Georgia. The majority of his practice is providing advice and representation to employers, insurance companies, insurance funds, and third party administrators in the defense of workers’ compensation claims, whether at trial or on appeal.  Rayford also represents such entities in disputes with both Florida and Georgia state governments and regulators involving the operation of their companies and businesses. He has handled workers’ compensation cases all over Georgia and North Florida since 1990.  The law firm of Casey Gilson is a firm that practices in the areas of labor law, personal injury defense, business litigation, trademark matters, patent disputes, bankruptcy cases and general litigation throughout all parts of Georgia.  Rayford talked about some key areas where businesses make mistakes that can create increased exposure to workers compensation costs.  He shared recommendations that employers could use to improve relations with injured employees as well as reducing risk for fraudulent behaviors.

Michael Hollingsworth is an award-winning attorney with Nelson, Mullins, Riley, and Scarborough LLP, located in Atlanta.  He is a managing partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough’s Atlanta office, and is co-head of the Firm’s Mergers & Acquisitions Group. Mr. Hollingsworth focuses on middle-market corporate transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and joint ventures. He also serves on the Firm’s Executive Committee, the governing body of seven partners who oversee firm standing committees, strategic initiatives, and firm operations. Michael represents private equity and hedge funds relative to their formation, operations and investments.  He has a broad range of industry experience including food and beverage, consumer-branded products, healthcare, construction and aggregates, technology and telecommunications, media, manufacturing and distribution, and business services.  Michael is also a transactional lawyer in the Firm’s multidisciplinary National Healthcare Practice Group.

Nelson Mullins provides advice and counsel in litigation, corporate, securities, finance, intellectual property, employment, government relations, regulatory, and other needs of clients ranging from private individuals to large businesses, including many publicly held companies.  Nelson Mullins offers services in over 40 practice areas and as such they are able to provide expertise to a wide range of legal and business problems while offering value-added service to clients. Many Nelson Mullins clients—including growth companies, expanding local businesses, and major international companies—retain the Firm to provide all of their legal services. Other clients are national companies requiring assistance with specific regional or local legal matters. The Firm also has experience representing international companies interested in locating facilities in the Southeast. Start-up assistance for entrepreneurial endeavors, multi-action litigation defense, and representation of underwriters and investment bankers are only a few of the services that are provided by Nelson Mullins attorneys.  Michael talked about how rewarding it is to become a trusted adviser for his clients as well as helping them to successfully navigate the sale of a successful business to the betterment of their financial situations.

Bo Wilkins, of SoundRiver Advisors stopped by to talk about the way their firm helps privately-owned businesses plan for generational transitions of ownership as well as preparation for sale or merger should those options be the chosen path for their clients.  SoundRiver Advisors is an independent wealth management and life insurance advisory firm providing strategies to help privately held business owners invest, protect, and perpetuate their wealth.  We talked about how challenging it can be for companies to retain high-performing, key executives (as well as how expensive it can be to replace them).  SoundRiver Advisors is able to help the business owner develop a compensation plan that affords their key executives with a compelling pay and bonus structure along with effective investment/benefit vehicles that will optimize the tax picture of that compensation package, making it much more likely those important executives will remain in place.  The firm provides certified financial and insurance experts and is a Registered Investment Advisor.  SoundRiver is structured to offer their clients unbiased and untethered solutions. They avoid selling captive investment or insurance solutions.  You don’t have to talk with their folks very long before you realize they are in the business of finding the best solution for each of their clients.

Our Mission

We help local business leaders get the word out about the important work they’re doing to serve their market, their community, and their profession.

We support and celebrate business by sharing positive business stories that traditional media ignores. Some media leans left. Some media leans right. We lean business.
