Center for Health Transformation
Steve Fraime of WellStar’s Center for Health Transformation

Center for Health Transformation

I hosted Steve Fraime, Director of WellStar’s Center for Health Transformation on this episode.  WellStar is rather unique in its investment in an internal center for health innovation—that’s a department typically seen at academic medical centers.  The WellStar health system engages with their providers to uncover ideas for opportunities to innovate that will improve patient outcomes and patient experience, as well as ideas that will improve work environment for the system.

Steve explained how the Center for Health Transformation initially got its start as a think tank designed to pull together leaders from 20 health systems to identify best practices and facilitate innovation among them.  As the initiative got going, it became evident that often, participants were reticent to share information that was perceived to give a particular organization some measure of market advantage.

Ultimately, WellStar decided they would pull the concept within their borders to focus on internal innovations that will improve their overall performance.  From there, the organization worked to regularly interface with physicians within the system, along with folks in leadership roles to get suggestions for processes that could be improved upon.

Steve talked about two projects that were suggested by providers.  One project that was brought by orthopedic surgeons was to explore the possibility of developing a more reliable means of producing a cast for fractured extremities.  Another was to address the challenge for patients to navigate the large, multi-site, multi-building campuses that constitute the WellStar health system.

The Center for Health Innovation chose to collaborate with the Georgia Tech Capstone project.

MARTA and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises

This week, Lara Hodgson, CEO and Founder of NOWaccount came by and brought experts from Atlanta’s mass transit authority and a WBE who’s worked with them to talk about MARTA and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises.  Ferdinand Risco is the Executive Director for Marta’s Diversity and Equal Opportunity platform.  This arm of MARTA focuses on engaging Atlanta’s disadvantaged business enterprises to provide them with opportunities to vie for contracts and sub-contracts to work with federally-funded projects around the community.

Ferdinand shared that their goal for DBE participation is 30% of contracts awarded to this demographic of Atlanta’s business community.  He talked about the fact that there are business opportunities on a broad spectrum of needs from basic office supplies to construction, planning, and other services.  We talked about the online resources MARTA makes available to allow local business owners to easily review current and upcoming projects they could potentially participate in.

We also talked about the fact that business owners need to go through the effort to establish credit and corporate structuring to position themselves to be able to meet certification requirements for DBE status.  Through partnerships with GMSDC and SBA, MARTA helps business owners have access to these often-free education and mentoring resources, as well as access to necessary resources such as working capital.

Lara shared information about NOWaccount’s recent partnering with MARTA to make their innovative capital solution available to the B2B community.  This solution gives business owners access to their AR capital within 5 days or less for 2.5% of the total AR sold.  In this way, NOWaccount gives B2B’s quick access to the capital they’ve already earned so they can add new staff, take larger orders, or purchase in bulk on discounts they wouldn’t be able to get otherwise.

Lara also introduced us to Heather Alhadeff, President of Center Forward, a transportation and land use planning firm based in Atlanta.  Heather is so committed to the value of mass transit, she hasn’t owned a car in years.  In addition to avoiding headaches associated with driving with Atlanta traffic, she also has gained first-hand experience of what users of our mass transit system experience.  This affords her with insight to be able to recommend options that would improve on the experience and/or allows her to effectively engage community residents when discussing developments (growth or retraction) of mass transit, road systems, or urban land development.

We talked about why transportation is such a key element of urban or city planning, discussing examples of how mass transit availability can have unexpected impacts on such facets of our lives as healthcare delivery and other important functions.

Booth 61 at Atlanta CEO Council with Margaret Martin 3 03 2014I love days when I meet someone new especially when they are as smart, energetic, and successful as Margaret Martin. Blake Patton was kind to introduce me to Margaret at the Atlanta CEO Council meeting last Monday. Margaret agreed to join me in Booth 61 to talk about her very exciting company, Merlin Mobility. Merlin is a Georgia Tech Innovation Institute company located in the Atlanta Technology Development Center (ATDC), at Georgia Tech. Merlin Mobility’s cloud-hosted Augmented Reality (AR) platform enables companies to create, host, deliver, manage and track mobile AR-based content and customer data. The platform is available in both Software as a Service (SaaS) and Enterprise versions. The most fascinating thing I learned is that Margaret has been leading Merlin for over 5 years without any venture or angel investment. Merlin’s funding has been generated from their clients which in my book is as good as it gets. I am sure you will enjoy hearing Margaret share her story.

Booth 61 with David Lewis and Che Watkins 1Today was a very special day in Booth 61 history. I was honored to have two wonderful people join me to discuss (co) lab 2013 created and produced by Leadership Atlanta. Ché Watkins is a senior executive with the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Spellman graduate and alumnus of Leadership Atlanta Class of 2009. David Lewis is a highly acclaimed director/producer/radio host, award winning journalist, Harvard graduate and alumnus of Leadership Atlanta Class of 2012. I am an old man being an alumnus of Leadership Atlanta Class of 1986 when the earth was still cooling and no one I know owned a computer. My how times have changed. Leadership Atlanta was a defining moment in my life and based on today’s interview, I believe it was a defining moment in the lives of Ché and David.

(co) lab 2013 is going to be an extraordinary experience filled with interactive sessions led by world leaders in education, government, politics, and business. Two time Pulitzer prize winning author from the New York Times, Thomas Friedman ends the sessions on Monday the 23rd. There are over 70 speakers from Sunday noon until the closing presentation including Sir Ken Robinson, Mayor Kasim Reed, Governor Nathan Deal, Ron Clark, Alan Dabbiere, David Cummings, Bud Peterson and the list goes on and on. I think this is the most important educational opportunity for people in our community in 2013.

If you love Atlanta, please listen to our show and register to participate in the inaugural (co) lab 2013. You may register and learn more about this amazing event at: (co) lab summit 2013

Booth 61 with Julie Bryant Fisher and Larry WilliamsWhat a great day in Booth 61 with long time friend and Atlanta Media Maven, Julie Bryant Fisher and Atlanta Chamber of Commerce Vice President of Technology, Larry Williams. Julie and Larry shared the exciting story of Atlanta’s thriving and growing Mobility market place. As an Atlanta native, I am so proud of everything our Chamber is doing to promote the Atlanta entrepreneurial, start-up technology community. The results are powerful.

They also shared all of the exciting news about the upcoming Mobility LIVE event on October 1st at the Woodruff Arts Center. There are less than 500 available seats. This is a DO NOT MISS EVENT! My company, Hunter Technical Resources will bring a crowd so if you want tickets, you should order them yesterday. 🙂
