Businesses With Integrity

I continued our series with Life University’s Dr. Gilles LaMarche, focusing on business leaders with integrity.  The series is a lead-in to Life University’s Life Talks World Congress event coming up May 12-13.  The 2 day event will be featuring numerous subject matter experts on relationships, personal and professional, and various aspects of our lives where we can improve how we experience others and how they experience us.  Last year’s event was very popular with its attendees, with many proclaiming it to have made significant impact on their lives for having gone.

Gilles introduced us to Chuck Papandrea, of Life Leadership (unrelated to Life University).  His firm works with businesses seeking to increase morale, productivity, and customer satisfaction through improved communication and leadership.  He has seen his small- to mid-sized business clients experience major turn-arounds in morale and employee retention, coupled with growing revenues as employees begin to truly personalize their work and the company.

Bo Wilkins of SoundRiver advisors works with business owners and entrepreneurs to help them plan and execute transition of their business through successful sales or migration to heirs/family.  He talked about how challenging it can be for a busy owner to effectively manage the business and coordinate what is a multi-person team who needs to be evaluating and in some cases modifying elements of the business’s financial plan and execution.

Bo explained how important it is to begin planning for a transition 3-5+ years ahead of an anticipated move to sell or transfer the company, as it can take that long to have all elements lined out that affect sale value and pay-outs, viability of the business after the owner moves aside, etc.

He introduced us to Steve Hunter, of Greene, Holcomb, and Fisher.  With offices in Minneapolis, Phoenix, Seattle and Atlanta, is an investment banking firm that specializes in mergers and acquisitions, private placements and financial advisory services for the middle market.

At Greene Holcomb Fisher, experience from nationally prominent investment banks and leading law firms is blended with senior-level attention and entrepreneurial ingenuity to deliver creative services to high quality companies.  The firm’s investment bankers specialize in the Consumer, Food & Agribusiness, Healthcare, Industrial Products & Services, Business & Education Services, Technology and Energy & Infrastructure sectors.  Greene Holcomb Fisher provides global reach through Clairfield International.  For more information, please visit www.ghf.net and www.clairfield.com.

J Cornelius of Nine Labs stopped by to talk about how his company helps companies insure they are effectively projecting their brand across digital platforms such as website and social media, and mobile devices.  The company also provides consulting services that seek to clearly identify the client’s true customer base such that messaging will be appropriate to meet the needs of that customer, who is often not who the business initially thought they were.

With a complement of experts in branding, digital media, and web design, J’s team at Nine Labs help companies to know the time and revenue invested in their website and branding is actually achieving the desired goal and allowing it to create the ROI that should come with such efforts.

Sabetay Palatchi, of Just Military Loans shared information about their service, providing active duty and military veterans with access to needed capital through small loans and other options.  He talked about some of the challenges military personnel face getting access to loans such as frequently moving and/or being deployed, which occasionally results in negative credit events.  Just Military Loans is able to work with military personnel with a personalized approach that helps them re-establish their good credit and take care of personal business in need of funds.

Life University and Solution Road

We continue our series with Dr. Gilles LaMarche of Life University, focusing on business leaders with integrity.  I had the pleasure of featuring my publicist, Sarah Smith, Founder of Solution Road, and her creative director, Teresa Roth.  Having gotten to know Sarah over the past year I can readily say she fits the theme of integrity in personal and professional life.

Her consultancy, Solution Road, brings clients expertise in branding and message, fund raising/development, a speakers bureau, advocacy, and more.  The company has worked with clients in biotechnology, health sciences, and the business sector, among others.

We talked about how important integrity is in branding and message, along with the importance of presenting useful information via social media platforms.  Peruse any marketing-related sites these days and it’s quickly clear that providing high-quality, engaging content that informs your customer with insights they can use is necessary to succeed in today’s digital world.

Matt Germain and Alyse Smith talk chiropractic care.

Chiropractic

On this week’s episode we featured 2 Life University alumni from the world’s largest school for doctors of chiropractic.  Dr. Matt Germain and Alyce Smith from Back to Balance Wellness Centers joined us in the studio to talk about integrity and chiropractic care.

Matt explained how the holistic nature of chiropractic care appealed to him and drew him into become a DC.  In speaking with him it’s clear he takes what he does as a provider of health care very seriously.  And he understands his role is a facet of what is often a multi-specialty approach to regain or maintain wellness.

We talked about how it is important to him to take time to really get to know the full health picture of a patient and what their individual goals are for evaluating progress.  Matt expressed how he understands that in some instances, another type of care provider might be the best alternative for them or in others, be adjunctive to his treatment.

Alyse and Matt shared their views that regular chiropractic care, delivered by a clinically-driven DC, can help optimize one’s health through routine follow-up and occasional treatment to maintain maximal health and function of the body.  One way this is achieved is by addressing proper alignment of the skeletal structure, particularly the spine and others that lie along neural pathways, as misalignment can cause impingement of nerves, affecting muscle or organ function.

Both my wife and I have been patients of Dr. Germain, having experienced both chiropractic care and their professional massage therapy services as well.  I can say Matt certainly lives what he described in our interview, having taken much time to interview me about what I was experiencing and taking care to explain what his recommendations were for care.

Brooke Beach, Bill Plunk, Diedre Plunk

Kevy and CimCo

This week we continued our series with Life University and Dr. Gilles LaMarche, VP of Professional Relations, focusing on business leaders of integrity.  We hosted Brooke Beach, of Kevy, and Bill and Diedre Plunk, of CimCo.

After spending several years as a marketing expert, Brooke and some colleagues believe they could improve on the ecommerce/direct marketing customer experience and improve response rates and create more repeat customers.  To date, most email automation solutions such as Pardot, SalesForce, and others, focused on the B2B sector, helping businesses increase contact and ultimately, sales, with companies they’re trying to reach.  There are marketing automation solutions available for B2C/Retail enterprises to similarly leverage email to contact customers to enhance sales, these solutions have traditionally offered limited data that would let that enterprise truly evaluate ROI on a per email basis in dollars and cents.

The Kevy platform integrates with their clients’ existing ecommerce platform via java script that is embedded into the website code.  Once there, it enables Kevy and the customer to track user behavior by where they go on the site, how long they stay, the products and types of products they’re viewing, and whether they buy.  With this information, the retailer is able to display very behaviorally-relevant pop-up information that personalizes the experience and significantly increases conversion rates.

Additionally, the Kevy platform enables very user-specific automated email communications that are relevant to that user’s particular behavioral context.  Combining these technologies results in a dramatic rise in sales from existing customers in the retailer’s database and the ability to get very targeted with discounts and marketing message.  If you are interested in learning more, contact Brooke and her team here.

Upon entering the banking industry ~20 years ago, Bill unexpectedly found himself placed in charge of collections on loans in arrears.  Without any experience or real training in how to do so, he set about contacting debtors.  It turned out that his approach to this often-difficult conversation made him quite successful at it.

After spending some time with a collections firm that was not operating in an ethical fashion, he decided to launch his own firm and handle clients and debtors with the respect and professionalism that had served him so well to that point.

In that time, his integrity and professionalism made such an impression on debtors he was collecting on, some ultimately turned to him to collect for them after their accounts were settled.  His highly-personal approach to his work allows him to turn around outstanding accounts quickly, in many cases in less than 1-2 months.

Solution Road and Mosaic

This week marked the beginning of a bi-weekly series we’ll be hosting with Dr. Gilles LaMarche, VP of Professional Relations at Life University where we’ll be focusing on integrity in the business community and personal life.  This series will be leading into the Life Talks World Congress event coming up May 12-13, 2016.

Life Talks is about empowering leaders to create social change, make a transformational impact on the world and remove the interference to maximize their perfection within.  The event includes thought leadersin business and productivity, physical health, nutrition, compassion, forgiveness, vitalism, quantum healing, and more.

We will be featuring business leaders who are known to value integrity in their professional and personal lives, and we will introduce several high school students from the community who have also been recognized for exemplifying the trait in their personal and academic endeavors.

We were joined in studio by Sarah Smith and Stu Sheldon, of Solution Road and Mosaic, respectively.  Sarah has spent numerous years helping non-profit and for-profit organizations raise funding and public awareness for their respective work.  She draws on experience from healthcare as well as media and is very selective in the clients she and her team take on at Solution Road.

Stu is an expert in experiential marketing, in which brands look to engage a targeted subset of their customer base.  Their goal is to create an immersive experience that has a measure of exclusivity and hands-on interaction with elements of the brand.  In this way, the client company is able to leverage Earned Media to get people talking about their experience.  I first met Stu on the Midtown Business show talking about Escalate, the experiential marketing company that was recently acquired by Mosaic.

Ryan Klopfer is a student at  Life University where he is pursuing a doctorate in Chiropractics, Masters in Exercise Physiology, as well as a fellowship in functional neurology through the Carrick Institute. He plans to educate the world around me about objective and evidence based health procedures that will enable each person to live to their optimal potential.

Ryan is a student ambassador for the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP).  A program and service based non-profit founded in 2003 and based out of Jacksonville, Florida which works with post 9/11 veterans who have been injured physically or emotionally. They have 20 unique programs and services founded on the pillars of either mind, body, economic empowerment or engagement in an effort to holistically work with warriors and their family members. There are no dues or fees, ever, for warrior or caregiver participation. WWP feels those dues were paid on the battlefield. Currently, WWP has approximately 76,000 warriors in our database and 13,000 family members. WWP accepts no government funding and relies on the generosity of the American public and fundraising   efforts like this golf tournament put on by the Life University Student Ambassadors group.

Post 9/11 statistics:

6,858 DEATHS

52,369 WOUNDED

320,000 estimated TBIs

400,000 estimated with PTSD

Carrick Brain Centers

Functional Neurology

This week on Top Docs Radio I sat down with Doctors of Chiropractic, Dr. Gilles LaMarche, and Dr. Jake Shores.  Gilles is the VP of Professional Relations for Life University, in Marietta, GA.  The college is home to the largest chiropractic medicine schools in the world.

Jake is Clinical Director for Carrick Brain Centers, with offices in Dallas, TX, and Marietta, GA.  Carrick Brain Centers employs a functional neurology approach to treating patients with traumatic brain injuries (TBI), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and other neurologic problems.

We talked about how the body has an innate capacity to heal itself if it’s given proper nutrition and when therapeutic approaches tap into that self-healing power.  The Functional Neurology Society defines functional neurology this way: “Functional Neurology is based on the principles of neuroplasticity. The various parts of your nervous system can be altered to work more efficiently and even regenerate. The goal of a Functional Neurologist is to optimize this remarkable ability.”

Jake shared how the Carrick Brain Centers utilize the concept of neuroplasticity to help their patients work around previous neurologic injuries and challenges through a variety of movements and activities that help activate pathways in the brain that reawaken areas that have not been functioning to their capacity.

We talked about some patient examples that highlight how this approach can help people gain or regain function that was thought to be improbable elsewhere.

Gilles discussed the various health-related fields of study Life University offers, ranging from kinesiology to functional neurology, vitalistic nutrition, business, and others, including some masters-level degrees.

Life University also offers a number of men’s and women’s athletic sports and they’re competing on a high level—the men’s 15 man rugby team won the National Championship this year.  The school is working to nearly double their enrollment by 2018 from 3000 students to at least 6000.

Intellimedix and Life University

This week we sat down with experts from Intellimedix and Life University.  Intellimedix is an Atlanta-based company that uses high-powered computing algorithms, coupled with genetic testing to identify existing medications that could potentially be re-purposed to effectively treat illnesses other than the ones they were originally designed to treat.  One of the company’s founders has a child who suffers from a severe form of epilepsy.  Unfortunately, there are limited treatments known to be available that will provide relief from this debilitating condition. His daughter’s story influenced the decision to focus the company’s initial efforts on uncovering existing medications that could be successfully re-purposed to help folks dealing with this type of epilepsy and other neurologic disorders.

Chief Science Officer, Jeff Skolnick shared the example of how a blood pressure medication (Viagra) was re-purposed to treat erectile dysfunction.  He went on the discuss the physiology/chemistry behind why this is possible and why it makes sense to look for existing, approved medications that have the ability to improve quality of life for patients dealing with illnesses different from those the medications are initially intended to treat.  This approach saves a great deal of time and money over the years-long, massively-expensive process of developing a medication from ground zero to treat a particular condition; allowing patients in need to receive access to an effective treatment sooner.

Dr. Gilles LeMarche, VP of Professional Relations at Life University came by to talk about the undergraduate and graduate programs available at their Marietta, GA-based campus.  They offer a number of health, wellness, and sports-related degrees ranging from chiropractic medicine, to vitalistic nutrition, functional kinesiology, and others.  He shared their approach to wellness, applying the philosphy of “vitalism” allows their graduates to help their clients/patients by helping the body to heal itself; as it is ideally capable of doing when interfering factors are removed.
