The Coder School story was made possible because of the generosity of Tim O’Connor with Terraform Group. Learn how you can help tell a story like this one here.

Jerry Massey is the Co-Owner of theCoderSchool in East Cobb. Growing up he loved to play video games, but his mother would always tell him that he should learn how to create video games – not just play them. He took her advice and studied Computer Engineering in college which taught him circuit design and coding and led him to a career spent leading teams that have built applications on mobile PC’s, websites, desktop computers and smartphones. He credits his career success to his mother’s early advice, to always learn what’s happening behind the scenes. He and his wife Kim are excited to bring this approach to learning technology to kids in the East Cobb area with theCoderSchool and believe it will unlock a world of opportunity for them to thrive in our technology-driven society.

Kim Massey is the Co-Owner of theCoderSchool in East Cobb. She truly believes that for a child to develop into a successful adult they must be challenged to think critically and problem solve; skills that will help them master ANY topic. She was drawn to theCoderSchool philosophy because it emphasizes the development of these skills while teaching kids to code in an environment where they are encouraged to learn and create. With a PhD in Community Psychology, her research has primarily focused on youth development. She has spent over 15 years providing organizational and database development consulting services to non-profit organizations across the nation. She looks forward to using her experience to help create the next generation of leaders.

PED Talks – Professional and Executive Development – PED Talks are short, power-packed presentations by local community leaders sharing their thoughts on subjects important to women in business. This year we are proud to present our PED Talk speakers:

PED Talk Speaker – Quint Studer, Founder and CEO, Studer Community Institute ● “Even High Performers Struggle with Change” ● Program description: Individuals who have always performed highly can sometimes underestimate the impact that change will have on them. Through Quint’s work with organizations over the decades he has found high performers struggle with change even more so than others. Quint will describe why this is and what can be done to help high performers manage change.

PED Talk Speaker – Sue Straughn, News Anchor and Senior Editor, WEAR TV, Channel 3 ● “Let Your Passion Find Your Purpose.” ● Program description: You give your best and you give your most when you’re giving from the heart. Is your heart in the work that you do; in the service that you give? We will take just a minute to think about some ways to get the most out of our time, our resources and our life.

PED Talk Speaker – Andrea Krieger, Executive Director of Institutional Development. Pensacola State College Foundation ● “You CHOOSE (Motivated by Fear/Inspired by Excellence) No one can be a better YOU!” ● Program description: Is fear negative and inspiration positive? If you get sweaty palms each time you have to present to an audience… if you get butterflies when you have to pitch an idea or make a sale… if you spend additional hours ensuring work is “perfect” before you hand it in… are these indications of fear or inspiration? Is one good and the other bad? Both fear and inspiration can reap excellence, but there can be diverse consequences on individuals depending on how the motivation is viewed. This presentation will discuss whether it is better to strive for excellence or fear failure? When inspiration is founded in a belief that No one can be a better YOU, possibilities are limitless.

Tax Status – PWGC is a recognized Florida NOT for profit. We are not a 501c or similar but we are still recognized as a not-for-profit. Sponsorships are recorded by the donor as business expenses, professional development, or other category depending on their own internal financial regulations.

Shatha has a diverse background with experience working for a hospital, a Fortune 500 Pharma company as well as starting and growing a non-profit organization in Phoenix, AZ.  During her career in both the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry, she worked in a variety of roles ranging from strategy, sales, operations, and compliance, until her and her family relocated to Phoenix in 2010.

In 2010, Shatha Barbour co-founded a non-profit educational organization that has grown tremendously over the past 6 yrs.  Shatha was not only a founding member of Good Tree Institute but was also the Administrative Director of the first 3 years of its existence, managing the operations of the organization until the institute was able to hire someone to take on that role. Shatha still actively participates in the operational oversight of the organization as she sits on the Board.  Since she is committed to education and leadership training, ShathaBarbour also teaches a weekly leadership class to high school students through the process of starting, developing, and launching a community project over the course of 8 months.

To give a sense of the scale and growth of this non-profit, it started as a children’s language immersion program that consisted of 4 classes and approximately 35 children to fill in a much-needed gap in the Phoenix community.  Since then, it has grown beyond just a children’s language immersion program to also hold leadership development classes and adult enrichment. Today, there are 6 concurrent children’s programs ranging from pre-school to high school, 2 different adult programs, as well teacher training program, and an ongoing curriculum development program.  Today, the total reach exceeds 135 individuals from all ranges and 15 teachers with a budget of almost $80,000.   There is much growth in this organization as it looks to hire a community youth director, solidify curriculum and training, and expand beyond Phoenix as it gains attention from other communities across the nation.

These experiences have given her a chance to work and to see all aspects of growth and development, and have ultimately positioned her to pursue her passion:  cultivating and empowering women to fulfill their goals and business ideas in a collaborative environment through HeraHub!  In her free time, you’ll find Shatha hiking the peaks around Phoenix, powering through Crossfit workouts, teaching high school students about leadership and community service, and spending quality time with her husband and three kids.

Hera Hub is the first international female-focused coworking space – a shared, flexible work and meeting space where entrepreneurial women can create and collaborate in a professional, productive, spa-like environment. The platform provides their members with connections to other business experts, access to educational workshops, and visibility within the community… thus giving them the support they need to be prosperous.

“Michael and Jennifer have been responsible for all press releases and company communication, and serve as my ongoing editing team. There is a reason they have provided communication support for some of the most recognized CEOs in the U.S. – I wouldn’t trade them for the world.” Johnnie Hernandez, entrepreneur and former Fortune 50 executive

Jennifer Rock and Michael Voss have a shared, lifelong passion for storytelling. They have had the good fortune to work for and with companies that span industries and impact, where they have spearheaded global communication strategy and execution for more than 20 years. In 2013, they struck out on their own to form the communications agency ROCKdotVOSS, and to finish their debut novel – “B.S., Incorporated.” The novel has been called “a rich combination of comedy, ingenuity and sass” and was named one of the 10 Best Business Books of 2016 by WealthManagement.com. The book is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks and via RockAndVossBooks.com.

We are storytellers.

Our shared passion for captivating audiences goes back – way back – to when Jennifer published haikus in her first-grade newsletter, and Mike entertained other kids on the school bus with his creative fiction.

Not surprisingly, our jones for storytelling fueled our individual career paths, where we held roles in journalism, advertising, public relations, marketing and corporate communications. Along the way, we had the good fortune to work for and with companies that spanned industries and impact – from privately held start-ups to Fortune 50 powerhouses.

Our paths crossed at Best Buy, where – for more than a decade, we led the Internal Communications function and spearheaded all communications strategy and execution for the company’s 170,000 employees. We counseled and collaborated with senior executives, managed a network of global communication vehicles and events, and developed strategies to ensure the success of complex initiatives such as mergers and acquisitions, international expansion and corporate re-organizations. Somewhere in the midst of it all, we found time to effectively communicate four CEO transitions and build a groundbreaking internal social media program.

Then we struck out on our own, using our combined 40+ years of experience as strategists and communicators to form ROCKdotVOSS – an agency dedicated to helping tell your company’s story.

Because whether you’re looking to boost employee engagement, increase your close rate or entertain the other kids on the bus, it always starts with a great story.

See our Services page for more about what we do and how we can help. Or contact us directly at michaelvoss@rockdotvoss.com or jenniferrock@rockdotvoss.com.
